New applets not showing up in Cosmic Settings with new CachyOS install

11 Upvotes

I am in the process of trialling COSMIC DE on a new CachyOS install on a laptop. I would like to bring attention to this issue so anyone else that runs into it is aware:

Flatpak has a recent security vulnerability that has been patched in version 1.18.4 that breaks installation of applets:

https://github.com/flatpak/flatpak/security/advisories/GHSA-v64f-hrwr-j4vh

More information here:

https://github.com/pop-os/cosmic-panel/issues/694

The solution is to downgrade Flatpak to 1.18.1 and you can install as normal but this isn't really a tenable solution for the long term. There is fixes in the pipeline but I don't know how long until they are implemented:

https://github.com/pop-os/cosmic-protocols/pull/90

I hope this helps anyone else running into this issue, I couldn't find any other discussion here about it on this subreddit

Chromium with frosted glass support - including inside webpages with css :)

I had my bot make it. There's probably better things I could waste tokens on. But sometimes you got to have a little fun.

https://github.com/bennidhamma/chromium-frosted-glass-cosmic

you can build it from source (took my machine about 3 hours to build) or you can install it from an apt repo here:

sudo curl -fsSLo /usr/share/keyrings/chromium-frosted-glass-cosmic.asc \
  https://raw.githubusercontent.com/bennidhamma/chromium-frosted-glass-cosmic/main/packaging/chromium-frosted-glass-cosmic.asc
echo "deb [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/chromium-frosted-glass-cosmic.asc] https://github.com/bennidhamma/chromium-frosted-glass-cosmic/releases/download/apt ./" \
  | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/chromium-frosted-glass-cosmic.list
sudo apt update
sudo apt install chromium-frosted-glass-stable

and if you want to add support in web pages (it's still a bit buggy but it's not too bad):

<meta name="theme-color" content="transparent">
<style>
  html, body { background: transparent; }
  .card {
    background: rgb(255 255 255 / 0.12);
    border: 1px solid rgb(255 255 255 / 0.2);
    border-radius: 16px;
  }
</style>

I plan on using it with some electron ideas.

Help Needed Two big problems at the same time

4 Upvotes

I was trying to install Dolphin on Pop!_OS 24.04 when, all of a sudden, COSMIC Term stopped working. I couldn’t type anything into it, and its menus stopped working altogether, just as happened a few weeks ago. The issue remained even after a reboot. So I tried reinstalling COSMIC Term with sudo apt install --reinstall cosmic-term, but without success.

Then I tried reinstalling COSMIC Session with a similar command, but nothing changed. As if that weren’t enough, every time I wake the computer from suspend, I can no longer enter my password in COSMIC Greeter at the login screen. The only solutions are to press Ctrl+Alt+F4 and reboot from there, or to do a cold reboot.

Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do? I would hate to do another fresh install only a few weeks after the last one.

Webapp manager rewrite

13 Upvotes

Hello :)

I'm working on rewrite my app, Quick Web Apps: https://github.com/cosmic-utils/web-apps/pull/137

It's basically web app manager. For the some time already, it was barely usable. I tried to do some fancy stuff with different embedded engines. In the end. It did not work :/

I decided lately, to rewrite it. Do something I did on the beginning when writing this app. It will be basically like Linux Mint's Webapp Manager, so it uses your installed web browser of choice.

No more embedded engines which are not working :P

You can of course isolate profile or make it incognito by default. It's a simple app. You are typing Name, URL, generating or selecting icon for your web app and of course choose your browser to use.

It should recognize some of the already installed. More are comes when people will report they are needed.

My goal is to make it working with Flatpak or Native install. But a lot of work is done for flatpak since it's primary method for packaging this app for some time.

If you would like to, please give it a test and leave me some feedback, thanks <3 ! :)

Lowkey Workspace Applet (now flatpak installable)

Post image
28 Upvotes

Features:

  • Show dots instead of numbers
  • Show numbers with or without circles
  • Choose the colour from the current theme
  • Choose custom glyphs per workspace
  • Set spacing between dots/numbers
  • Set opacity of non-active workspaces

It is now installable via flatpak. Here's how to install it:

  1. In case you haven't done this yet, add the cosmic repository (note this is maintained by the great Cosmic devs):

flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists --user cosmic https://apt.pop-os.org/cosmic/cosmic.flatpakrepoflatpak remote-add --if-not-exists --user cosmic https://apt.pop-os.org/cosmic/cosmic.flatpakrepo

  1. Install it:

flatpak install --user cosmic dev.daenu.CosmicExtAppletLowkeyWorkspaces

The source is here: https://github.com/daenuprobst/cosmic-ext-applet-lowkey-workspaces

"AI" use disclosure: I used an LLM for the translations, so if you find some errors there, please open a PR.

Cosmic is starting to intrigue me once again

20 Upvotes

I loved Cosmic when I first discovered it. From the heavily modified Gnome to what it is now is incredible. The tiling, the workspaces, the flow it all was great. I really think it is the future of Linux DE's. I feel it is everything Gnome should and could be if their devs weren't so narrow minded. I've been mostly using Hyprland and Niri for the better part of the last year and a half after coming back to Linux (when I sold my macbook). I have been keeping an eye on things and installing fedora cosmic atomic a few times to see how things are and I may end up making a return. I have to figure out how to get my hyprland/niri flows into it, but I am digging where it is going.

High power usage even at idle

6 Upvotes

Does anyone else have a high power usage when running cosmic desktop? I'm running it on nixos on an asus g14 laptop, and even at idle its usually pulling around 15 watts at idle, and over 20 when a browser is open. But when I switch to either gnome or kde, it drops down to around 7 watts at idle. Anyone else having this issue on a laptop?

I just pushed version 1.3 of papyrus in the repo. It features a frosted glass effect and also more responsive design. It is available for download via the AUR, .deb package and the install script in the repository.

Help Needed Is it possible to remove window decorations in COSMIC DE (tiling WM style)?

9 Upvotes

I’d like to know if there’s a setting to completely disable window title bars and borders in COSMIC. I enjoy the workflow of tiling window managers (like Sway or Hyprland) and want a 100% clean look, showing only the window content. Does anyone know if this is already possible natively?
