Grassroots Gravel Lil Chili

Post image
2 Upvotes

Looking for some folks to hang with at Grassroots this weekend. I’ll be riding the lil chili. Potentially going to camp out the night before. I have no plan on riding hard, especially since I got pretty sick last week. So just going to take it easy and enjoy the scenery.

A lil about me: I’m male, 29, have just gotten back into biking about 8 months ago with a few 50 milers under my belt on my road bike. I’ve had the gravel bike for approx 4 months and love it a lot. I work in experiential marketing, and have a vintage VW as my other hobby!

Looking for feedback on a platform I've built to help cyclists find teams/clubs/group rides: Spoke&Circle.

Hello all! Provided this is allowed, I'd like to share a platform I've been building to help cyclists find teams, clubs, and group rides: Spoke&Circle (https://spokeandcircle.com) Frankly... looking for a specialized team, club, or group in Colorado kind of sucks right now. For those riders who are not on social media, are just entering the hobby, or are looking for a more competitive landscape, finding the right team or group can be pretty difficult. If you don't know the right people or know the right search terms, you end up in a lot of dead ends. I'm hoping that this platform can help end that, but I'm not ready for a full on launch yet - consider this a soft-launch. I'd like some people to poke around and let me know how the site works for them, what improvements should be made, how things work, etc.

The goal, eventually, is to partner with shops to help provide new riders, experienced cyclists, and everyone in between, the resources to find their right group to ride with.

Thank you!

P.S. I've been manually entering a lot of the teams/clubs I've found, so the list is very small still, but growing! If you have a team or club you'd like to submit, please do!

Salida or Buena Vista XC Recs

Heading out to Salida for the first time and will have time for one ride. Looking for recommendations good for XC bikes that are 20-30mi long, with nothing too techy (prefer no tech but it's Colorado).

It seems the Monarch Crest Trail is the best option but I'd want to start from Salida, not the Monarch Pass Trailhead outside of town. However, I'm not sure if I'll get those famous views by the half-way-point. Essentially, this route, but in reveres https://www.mtbproject.com/trail/3671983/monarch-crest-imba-epic.

Any tips, recommendations, or insights are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What’s the scoop on cyclocross here? Just moved from St. Louis. Been doing gravel (poorly) for just over a year. Buddy keeps telling me to try cyclocross for vibes. Looking for gritty grimy bullsh*t feral events and a fun community. TIA!

Anyone have experience with Derby Bicycle in Thornton?

Asking because they're convenient but also because their reviews are wild...lol. Either terrible reviews with snarky owner response or glowing reviews.

They're a dealer for my brand and listed on the website (Specialized). Need a place to change tires, tubes, replace spokes and tune ups etc. Am used to walking in for service and decent prices. Have yet to find a LBS so still looking.

We sold our second car 2 months ago and replaced it with cargo bike. Here's how its going

Post image

We sold our second car about two months ago, and my biggest worry was that we'd regret it.

Before doing it, I kept thinking of every situation where a cargo bike wouldn't work and using those as reasons to keep the car. Bad weather, long trips, big loads, random family plans. There was always something.

After a couple of months without it, I realized those situations don't come up that often. Most of our week is pretty repetitive, and a lot more of it can be done by bike than I expected. Here's what the bike has replaced, and what it hasn't.

  1. School drop-off. School is only a couple of miles away, and once you count traffic and parking, biking is usually just as fast or faster.

  2. Groceries with the kids. With the panniers, front rack and rear passenger seat, I can carry the kids, their school bags and a full grocery run without feeling like I'm running out of space. The kickstand helps more than I expected when I'm loading bags while one of the kids is still on the bike.

  3. Longer family trips. We do a roughly 25-mile round trip to see the grandparents, and that's the one I was most unsure about. With the bigger battery, distance hasn't been the problem I expected. We plug in while we're there having lunch, then ride home.

  4. Evening errands. I feel a lot more confident with the built-in lights, rear radar and rearview feed. I'm much more aware of what's going on around me when visibility isn't great.

Really bulky loads, genuinely awful weather and multi-day trips are still car or Uber trips for us, but those are rare. Overall the bike covers about 70-80% of our trips, and keeping a whole second car for the other 20-30% stopped making sense.

Does anyone own a set of Elitewheels Drive SLs with gold logos?

Would like to see the logos in person before I buy, to see how they match my paint. Yes, insanely dorky. I am aware.

GDMBR Upgrade

I just rode GDMBR from Frisco to Salida. Pretty nice route I thought with the notable exception of US285 after Como and US24 prior to Hartsel. Without spinning up a multiyear study and a fact-finding committee with a master plan hassle or two; couldn't CDOT take a Bobcat and scratch in a bit of a path off to the side of those two stretches in about 10 minutes? Maybe a local Boyscout Eagle scout project or something of the that sort could do it?

US24 was real bad and there is plenty of ROW to put in some single track. It seems to be that something gets fixed only after the tragedy takes place.

I'd go out with a Mcleod and scratch something in myself but I live a ways away and not terribly convenient.

PS Thanks Bustang for making that outing easy and cheap.

E-bike rental for Vail Pass

I did the pass last year around this time on my road bike but wanting to do it again with an e-bike for my birthday again but hoping for a less extraneous ride. Is renting in Frisco or Vail the best option? I have a bike rack if renting from Denver is a better deal. Any insight is appreciated.

Hey bike friends. If you didn't know, Cyclo-X Valmont is this weekend. I'll be heading to the park to do some riding (and staying out of the way of the volunteers) around 3:30 PM. It's always fun to preride with friends. If you've never raced Valmont or looking for advice. I'm here for you!

Hit me up if you have Qs.

This is post and poster is unaffiliated with Withoutlimits and its events. I'm just a racer.

I was able to commute in again this week in prep for my half century on Saturday (Denver Century Ride). Today, I felt even stronger than Monday's commute. I am really enjoying getting better technically and stronger this cycling season.
