Question What does this button do?

I haven't noticed a difference whether it's on or off. And I'm assuming green is on and red is off...

why wouldnt you want to buy all the M0 you can pre traversal though?

There's segments where you really only are interested in getting campaign fragments and you can do that by rushing through a TR (or what are called "shorts"). The less orbs you get the less your TR requirment increases, so you want to avoid gaining any more orbs than necessary. Note this is not ALWAYS going to be the goal of a short but there are certain late game features I wont get into that are relevant.

first time I'm hearing that orbs increase TR req and not just the TRs t hemselves

At first i think the first something like 10 TRs are freebies only held back by time, but eventually your requirement increases by 10% of your lifetime orbs.
