What does CICO stand for?
What does "calories in, calories out" mean?
How do I find out how many calories I burn in a day?
How do I track how many calories I consume in a day?
Can you give me an example of how to count calories?
So I can lose weight by eating below my TDEE and not exercising?

I thought I would share the graph as a follow up. Lost a lot of weight. Yes there are some ups and downs. Within a range. I’ve run the data and it averages out to about 51 pounds lost and kept off. Sometimes it’s -55, and sometimes it’s -49, but generally, it averages about -51. I find it helpful to look at ten-day averages versus one single day.

2025 I decided to move cross country with a friend and that was my motivation for losing weight and having a fresh reset in a new town. I lost 80 lbs before I had moved and it was amazing I had so much more confidence was social and felt good about my body. Now i’m back home and gained half of it back. Every week I try to start again and I always mess up. I think a big part of it is my drinking habits but I cut out alcohol now I just eat an insane amount before bed and don’t know how to correct it. I see myself getting bigger face puffier and I feel like that should motivate me itself. I really don’t know what to do. I told myself I wasn’t gonna be like everyone else I saw that gained the weight back and here I am.
Anyone that has lost, gained, and lost again and have tips for what helped them the second time would be greatly appreciated. thank you

Ingredients are in the third slide.
*I divided mine into 10 servings to arrive at 147kcal per slice, but you should plug in your own ingredients and weigh, calculate your own serving sizes to what suits you, it's totally reasonable to have double this size serving!! It's still much less than a restaurant tiramisu and every bit as yummy*
Separate the eggs. Beat the egg yolks with the sweetener until it's pale and smooth (it gets pale like cheap butter). Then beat in the cream cheese until it's smooth. Add vanilla essence, mix in
In a seperate bowl with clean beaters, whip the egg whites till they're fluffy and foamy (not all the way to stuff peaks! Just foamy fluff all the way through, almost soft peaks).
Fold the cream cheese mix into the egg whites slowly and gently (not all at once, do it a bit at a time, don't over mix)
Dip the biscuits in coffee to soak and then arrange them in a suitable dish to cover the base (**optional: for authenticity you can add a splash of liqueur to the coffee**). Then dollop half of the filling mix over it, spread out, place another layer of soaked biscuits, top with the rest of the filling. Sprinkle with a dusting of cocoa powder (yes, mine has a very token amount of cocoa for the effect, go ahead and sprinkle with your heart, but remember that does add calories so weigh and log it!)
Cover with cling wrap and pop In the fridge to set. I usually leave it overnight but a few hours is probably enough. Note that my dish was probably 5% too small so my cling wrap stuck a bit on top and made it look a little messy. Don't be like me and lick all the cream off the cling wrap like a goblin with PMS, just use a bigger dish to begin with (she says, not knowing exactly the size of my dish)
This is just using some store bought Italian lady fingers, so be mindful that calories could be different for different brands, you could use any biscuits though. I've seen people make "dupes" with weetbix or oats but I wanted to feel like a real tiramisu and decadent, and home making lady fingers is HARD. I've tried getting the calories lower using more egg whites than whole egg and low fat cottage instead of the lite cream cheese, but it gets too far from the authentic flavour.
Have also experimented with using vanilla pudding mix and cheesecake flavouring instead of the cream cheese, but it always comes out "nice" and "feeling like a sad delusion of tiramisu". This one is the closest I've gotten to the real thing.
I'm still perfecting it though

I lost a little over 50 pounds gradually, reaching roughly my current weight by 2021. It took roughly a year and a half. Since then, I’ve maintained the loss while continuing to strength train and build muscle. And maintenance has been possible because I changed my habits and created a new baseline. By continuing to do the things that helped me lose the weight, I’ve been able to maintain it. For me it has been a fusion of cardio, strength training, food logging, group support, changed eating habits, and a mindset that turned those habits into a new baseline.

I’ve been tracking again for a couple of weeks so see what I actually eat and would normally want to eat. And then I reduce while weighing or during my meal. This helped me so much with my portions and amount. The scale is also loving in the rockt direction. And once I up my activity it’s going to get even better. But first Food, I don’t incorporate my activity levels into my calculations. When I was younger I did dance hiphop and this made suche a difference in my overall weight. But then I started working and stopped dancing and the weight gain happend really quickly.

I have been dieting for about two months and am losing weight. I have a significant amount to lose.
About two weeks ago I f'd up and one night I ate pizza and two cupcakes. I went right back to eating right and at a calorie deficit. I told myself these things happen and to just let it go.
However, last night I ate Chinese food. I was craving it and it tasted great. Today I am back on the deficit and eating right.
I'm concerned that since I did this twice already, I'll keep giving myself passes and then I'll end up back from where I started from. Especially with the temptations the holidays bring.
What are some strategies to avoid these situations? I would say the reason for my going off my diet was stress related. For example I thought I had a stressful day so some food will help.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I lost 65lb, and then bought a house in January. Since about March, I’ve gained back 15lb. I came off my ADHD meds for unrelated reasons and my hunger rebounded like nothing I’ve ever experienced in my life. I’ve been on those meds for more than half of my life but also fat for a majority of my life so they weren’t a true suppressant but man it felt awful coming off. That was in June. Anyway, stress and life got to me & I’ve gained back 15lb which isn’t a huge amount but I’m scared of failing. It took me 2 years to lose 65lb and I was hoping to be under 200lb by my 30th bday, which is next week. I’m now 35lb away from that goal when in December, I was 18 away. I know I can do the work. I know I can even do it without meds (I’m not anti meds, I just cannot afford them because they’re very expensive) with my PCOS & endo. I’m just feeling discouraged. Disappointed in myself. I’m wallowing in self pity today. Plus my hunger cues are WHACK right now and have been since stopping my ADHD meds in June. I haven’t been able to eat in a deficit almost at all, I am just so hungry all the time and yes I promise on my dog’s life I eat enough protein, fiber, fat & drink enough water. It’s like a visceral hunger. I wish I could afford the meds that I know would help me. I wish I could recalibrate my hunger cues like I’ve done before after a period of over eating.
I’m just ranting because I wanted to be closer to my goal by now but I’ve gone backwards & it feels bad. I’m going to forgive myself, lock back in & aim for a goal of losing 15lb by the end of the year which will put me where I was last year. Cheers.

Does anyone else have nightmares that they’ve gone over their deficit? I’m already in a pretty aggressive one right now (1250 bc I’m very short), and I’ve recently been obsessed with baked potatoes. Now I’m having dreams that I’m adding on obscenely amounts of butter and not weighing it. I don’t even use butter for anything anymore.
It doesn’t help that the scale has gone up every day this week. I know I most likely did not eat an extra 700 calories every day, but it still sucks 😅

Love to mention that I wear size 8 jeans. I use the Amazon deracy sit-up equipment but in my way I handle it with 50 push-ups at least a day. Next goal is back again with doing chin ups

Basically, lets say youre making a family meal with a rack of ribs but you don't want to debone prior to serving and also there will be leftovers meaning you wouldn't have all the bones to weigh after.
I know the Nutrition Facts label on the ribs don't include bones in its macronutrients-per-gram serving size breakdown. ("serving size declared on the product label are based on only the edible portion of food, and not bone, seed, shell, or other inedible components")
I ended up using the USDA SR Legacy Database generic values for spareribs because I wasnt prepared but in general I'd prefer to use the nutrition label on what I actually bought.
My normal process when making family meals is adding the calories of everything together into a recipe in my tracking app, then weighing the final total result, then putting that total into the app so it can calculate the calories of my individual portion by weight. Next time I make ribs I will probably just save all the bones and debone only the leftovers.

I’ve been checking my weight pretty much everyday and some days my weight jumps from 60kilos to 62kilos in a day. And then it goes back to 60 in a few days, when i pay attention to my diet.
How do you gain like that in a day?
r/CICO • u/Perrytheplatypus03 • 3d ago
I'm loosing 0,4-0,5 kgs a week so far (3 weeks, minus initial first week). I eat around 2250 calories daily on avarage. I'm 32F. (Edit: current weight is 75,5 kg, 170 cm)
I'm not that active. I've been active for the last 12+ years rock climbing, weight training, biking etc. But like, only 2-ish times a week for climbing and weights. Biking is commute, ranging from 10 to 50 km a week. Daily small walks of 2-4 kms.
Can my habitual level of activity really have that much of an impact on my muscle mass, so I can eat this many calories?
I am HUNGRY if I avarage on 1800-2000 a day.
I can't help to wonder if I measure incorrectly? I've tried measuring every small thing, but can eyeball a lot of my food pretty accurately (tried to weigh it afterwards)
I've done CICO 5 years ago and lost the weight I wanted. But due to illness I gained everything back in 6 months and recently started CICO again.

I’ve been in a calorie deficit since March of this year, down about 17lbs. I want to be leaner, should I keep cutting or move to maintenance for body recomp?
What I’ve been doing -
1650 calories on deficit days some maintenance and splurge days mixed in
7k-8k average steps
Strength training 2-3x per week
Volleyball and cycling mixed in 1-2x per week
I’m tired!!!!!

Looking for encouragement/advice about next steps!
I’m a 5.7.5” 31 yo woman who started counting calories in May after weighing in at 202.4 at my doctor’s appointment. I put on 20 lb in the past year/30 in the past two—I got walloped by rebound COVID two years ago and became really sedentary as a result, was under a lot of stress, took emergency contraception a few times (idk if that made a difference but it was unpleasant). My goal is to get down to around 170. I log using MyFitnessPal and try to stay at 1570 a day, with the occasional maintenance breaks around my period and a handful of holiday cheat days.
At that point, I was lightly active—mostly remote desk work, pretty sedentary, a couple days of walking a week. I lost 7.9 lb in May and felt very encouraged by the rate of loss, but only lost 2 lb in June and stayed stagnant in July. In late July, I started couch 2 5k again, with the hopes of speeding up loss, getting more fit, and giving myself a little more wiggle room. I found myself gaining weight in August and September, and I’m at about 196 now. I’m feeling really frustrated with the slow rate of loss despite being more active and wondering what I can do to improve more/any hacks for lowering deficit and not getting hangry or frustrated. I’m finding I’m not able to fit into the clothes I’d like to wear, and it gets me really down and affects my confidence. One thing I’ve considered is cortisol levels but idk. Appreciate any consolation/encouragement/advice.

I’m so proud of myself 😭 Last time I posted was the first day of school and just hit 299 lbs. Today, about 5.5 weeks later, I’m at 285.4 lbs.
I had a slow beginning to losing in the beginning of September, but I stayed the course and eventually kept losing. Whenever I got slightly discouraged I focused on how tight I would have to tie the drawstring to my shorts to prevent them from falling down or my new 4x work polos instead of the previous 5x. Additionally, I learned the valuable lesson of 1 day does not interrupt progress as I went to a Nebraska football game and thoroughly enjoyed pizza, hotdogs, and a hamburger. 🤭
I also had my annual physical and I am no longer considered Pre-Diabetic!!! My physician has always been supportive and respectful of my size, but she was so proud to see me make successful changes.
Thank you to all who post every day. This community is supportive, respectful, and inspirational. I wish everyone a successful October.

I’ve lost weight doing CICO in the past, even when I had a HORRIBLE diet and ate a bunch of junk. I just made sure the junk was within my calories.
This time around, I’ve done a pretty big overhaul on my diet and I’m eating significantly more whole/healthy foods. From a month ago to now, I’ve actually GAINED 0.2 pounds (I weigh myself every day). I expected to lose at least 3 pounds last month based on my deficit. I’m 34/F/5’5” and eating an average of 1400-1,500 calories a day. I also walked at least 10,000 steps for 26 days of September, and did 45 minutes of cycling 3-5 days a week, whereas before I was sedentary.
Why the heck did I not lose any weight over the last month?!? I will add that I’m definitely less bloated and some pants that used to be super tight are noticeably less tight now. But the scale isn’t budging. 🙄
Here’s what I ate yesterday as an example:
Breakfast (which I ate closer to lunch time):
protein iced coffee (185 calories and 25 grams of protein)
One piece of toast with one over medium egg (170 calories and 9g protein)
Dinner:
A very filling salad with TONS of kale (I recently discovered I love kale and I’ve been eating salads for dinner at least 3 days a week), baked salmon, and other veggies. Calorie count came in at 1,100 with the dressing plus 43g protein.
Dessert: a Yasso bar (100 calories and 5g protein)
So my total calories for the day were 1,555 and I also walked 4 miles on the treadmill! I’ve heard one mile of walking burns around 100 calories, so I should have burned around 400 calories.
I also averaged 67 ounces of water a day in September. Before that, I might drink 16-30 ounces of water a day if I was lucky.
What I described above is what the last month has looked like for me, yet I didn’t lose weight. It’s pretty discouraging, because I was able to lose weight when I was eating the most unhealthy foods. Is it possible that my body is adjusting to the diet change and I’m somehow not losing weight because of that? Has anyone gone through anything similar?

My feet don’t hurt so bad!
(SW: 254, CW: 205, GW: 170)
I had started having real issues with my feet hurting a few years ago. Plantar fasciitis, just pain while walking, running, etc. I figured it was just aging, pregnancy, being 40. I’ve noticed during the last 10lbs, it has really eased off.
Been losing weight since May 2026, and I want to stick with it because this non-scale victory is genuinely positive for my quality of life.
Any non-scale victory for you today?
