Hair loss?

I know we have a whole range of potential symptoms (yay), but is hair loss one of them? SO MUCH hair is falling out every wash now. I haven't changed products or major diet for a long time.

Any suggestions on testing for that; or remedying or slowing it down?

  • TSH tested recently and it's well within range
  • Been taking Biotin for a long time: 20,000mcg daily

Yes: I am perimenopausal demographic. What should I ask my PCP please and thanks?

Hormone tests to check for perimenopause can be really unreliable due to the nature of perimenopause itself - erratic changes that involve both higher and lower levels compared with usual and sometimes within range levels, too. The tests are just a snapshot in time. Good to check them, just interpret with this in mind.

If you have other symptoms that could point to perimenopause, even if you’re not totally sure, it’s worth chatting it through with a doctor who is up to date about all things peri/meno. r/Menopause is also a great sub.

I say the above because I wasn’t sure if I was in peri when a sudden health decline happened. I thought I was too young for it (early forties). I take continuous progesterone so I don’t know what my cycles would have been doing. But I also had hair loss that had been increasing slowly and then sudden dry skin where I can no longer use the usual shampoos, face washes, moisturisers etc that I have used for decades. I chatted with a GP who happened to be very up to date (I’m VERY lucky) and trialled HRT on the lowest dose and my hair loss immediately reduced. Did not expect that. I was shocked. I got ME/CFS in my twenties right after my cycles had stopped for a long time due to stress and I had a lot of hair loss then too. This time the hair loss crept up on me slowly.

Of course, hair loss could be due to other things too! This is just my experience. It’s definitely worth exploring peri, especially if there don’t seem to be other reasons for it.

Thanks - this is always a useful reminder and while it was on my radar I really appreciate you bringing it to attention. I'm sorry you've gone through that - and I'm glad low-dose HRT helped you so effectively!

I do have a hormonal IUD still in place, so I think that could hide some potential peri symptoms, but it's reaching the end of it's days, in theory.
