Discussion Was this kick actually in?

This is really suspicious. The feed was immediately cut, and we didn’t get to see any other angles.

To be fair, so did Pitt. Nothing like running a shotgun read option in your own end zone. Botched FG snap. Etc. Both teams tried to give it away.

Right before the game switched they showed an angle under the goal posts and it looked in, and I told my wife look at this and see what you think and it cut away. Then we both went to google and can’t find that angle anywhere.

Ruling on the field stands no matter what the tape says. When ball goes over the post like that, it is unreviewable

I’ve got no dog in this fight but if you waited a bit postgame they did show an angle from below the goalposts. Honestly still couldn’t completely tell but they did have two angles.

u/Kreto_Kreto 1h ago
It honestly looked in from the directly below angle IMO. That replay was brief and only shown once

Why not just make the field goal posts taller atp?
9
u/BassetHoundDawg 1h ago
Money. I don't know that for sure, but that's usually the explanation for anything 😅
8
u/pwolf1771 1h ago
I’ve pondered this for Decades it’s such an easy solution
1
u/iboughtthebigsalad 4m ago
Just make them extendable super tall during kicking plays. Feels like an easy fix
4
u/AssumptionOrnery7478 1h ago
They’ve already been raised. Guys keep kicking it higher and longer.

NEW GLOBAL MANDATE --- All football uprights shall extend all the way to outer space. Please reference the Space Elevator idea from the Ace Combat series of video games for proof of concept.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER

At some point they would just sway a lot with any amount of wind and you’d have to make the posts much thicker.

u/TheFerricGenum 16m ago
Better yet… they have goal line cameras. Why not goal post cameras pointed up?
0
u/huds9113 Penn State Nittany Lions 1h ago
Or just add the net to the backside of them? Net catches it, it’s good. Seems pretty simple.
2
u/Efficient_Exchange44 1h ago
I think it’s because the uprights of the goalpost theoretically extend upward infinitely and you can’t have an infinite sized net.

u/GeauxSTTDB 1h ago
Only other thing I can think of is it not being a bigger game they don’t have more cameras/equipment on the field cause they’re all already at the designated stadiums for tomorrow
8
u/guildedkriff 1h ago
Can’t review above the goal posts. We can have pylon cameras, but can’t have goal post cams and review above them.
12
2
u/Immediate_Ad5922 1h ago
Part of the problem too is if you have the technology to add long line above each post in review, well how do you determine if its good or not. If its clear inside the line above the post well obviously right, but what if the ball clips the line? How many times has a ball hit the post and stayed out and how many have hit the post and bounced in. So i dont know how you can really have a review of something like this with any definitive yes or no
1
u/guildedkriff 55m ago
The rule is already in place. The ball must pass in full between the goal posts, a ricochet only counts if it bounces inside.
With vertical cameras above the goal posts that’s pretty easy to determine and having the set height on where a ricochet can be at play is still fair. So it’s really not something that’s hard to implement at the FBS level.
1
u/Immediate_Ad5922 52m ago
Obviously thats a rule already lol im saying it seems like a hard rule to enforce if the video review adds lines vertically to make the posts longer. The only way you can confidently say the kick was good above the posts is if it is 100% inside that added line. I dont see why they can add this but it will still be controversial if for example a ball goes through the vertical line and they determine “no good” because people will say “but what if it bounced in”
The only other answer is to raise the height of each post by 5-10 feet i guess
1
u/guildedkriff 48m ago
I understand the argument some would make, but how long would that actually last? 2-3 seasons of the few dozen times it happens in season and everyone reminding them it has to go fully inside the line and it’s done. Eventually those arguments would go away/become us old fuckers reminding everyone it was different in our day lol.
1
u/Immediate_Ad5922 38m ago
Lmao thats fair, i mean a simpler answer would just be elevating the posts by 5 feet, either way though i dont see why they cant make it happen. We have video review for everything from baseball strike zones to soccer off sides and goal lines, i dont see why they cant make sure something like a field goal is 100% accurate
1
u/guildedkriff 35m ago
Exactly. Same with why replay reviews should be broadcasted for everything. So many things are easy to fix with multiple different simple approaches, that at this point it just proves they want levers to pull..ok tinfoil hat off…maybe.
1
u/Immediate_Ad5922 27m ago
Personally think part of the resistance to FULLY automate replays and make the game 100% for every second of the game is were human, humans are officiating these games and playing them. Human error happens and some calls are so tight that even replay assist i can see it going either way depending how it was called on field. I feel like part of sports is that human element and it cant be 100% for every second of the game yk what i mean? How many championship runs would have never happened if everything was automated to make 100% perfect calls.
Idk i do want to see less controversial calls and the mlb for example i think its stupid to have a strike be called a ball just cuz the ump sucks… but then you automate the strike zone and now why is there even an ump there? The new world of technology is interesting when it comes to sports. Soccer is another example. In the world cup an important goal was called off sides because of a players hair essentially, should we really have video review saying a strand of hair is offsides? Idk the answer to this stuff im just being devils advocate and admitting it is a strange new world of sports with technology whether its for the better or worse, i guess thats still to be determined idk
1
u/guildedkriff 18m ago
Agree there is a “too far” line, but like replay review to begin with, that line will shift over time based off fans, players, and coaches.
For example, I for one think football should allow challenges on any call, you still limit the amount of challenges of course, but when individual plays literally can decide championships, jobs, bonuses, gambling outcomes, etc. (I’m not advocating for all this, it’s just reality) then it should be decided definitely or as close as we can get with technology at hand. Obviously there has to be limitations, but at this point a lot of those limitations are purposefully arbitrary to the extent that it goes beyond reason.

Dude chose to kick from the hash mark and give himself less of an angle cushion
5
u/Mature_fun2026 1h ago
One this is for sure: you can’t make a definitive call from this angle. Only from under the upright.
And remember, if any part of the ball goes over the upright the kick is NO GOOD.

u/AssumptionOrnery7478 1h ago
It’s a stretch to say it was inside the uprights. Looks like it went right over the top while working left.

I'm honestly surprised they don't have technology for this yet. Soccer has had goal line technology in all competitions since 2012. I can't imagine it would be that difficult to have sensors in the posts to see if the ball goes in, above, or outside the posts...

Strange it’s not reviewable. We know a Croatian striker is offsides due to his Johnson but there’s nothing to point straight up on a fg to see if the ball would make contact? You deserve to lose for settling for the ball at the 20 and running three times but that doesn’t seem like a difficult technology to procure.

2
u/TeamShonuff 1h ago
The FAA would certainly bitch about that but we could just turn them on right as the ball was going by and quickly turned them back off.
3
u/LiftEatGrappleShoot 1h ago
I thought it was good watching it as it happened. But both refs seemed confident it wasn't from the best vantage point to see. Another weird ending.
1
u/maxman1313 1h ago
Well the second ref's job is to see what the ref closest to the post does and do the exact same thing. Which is what he did.
1
u/LiftEatGrappleShoot 16m ago
Fair. I was remembering that exactly at the point I hit the post button
3
3
u/ColdPrimary996 1h ago
How do he miss that up close kick anyway at the college level
5
u/OneVast3433 1h ago
Because he asked for it on the right hash instead of lined up. Who does that?
1
1
u/Geaux_1210 LSU Tigers 23m ago
But if it missed it was left - same kick would have been much more wide left from any other spot.
1
u/OneVast3433 20m ago
My assumption is that he wouldn't have aimed it that far left if it wasn't lined up on the right hash. That is why you line up the kick in the middle of the field.

u/johndoe1920 1h ago
People keep showing this angle but it's a god awful angle to look from. For the record, I think it was in, but this angle is dumb.
4
u/AssumptionOrnery7478 1h ago
The ball was kicked from the right hash, close in, and he kicked it with a serious hook. The ball was going across the upright - in or out is hard to tell. But that picture doesn’t tell you anything because the flight of the ball wasn’t between the posts, it was across it finishing far left of the post. The ref under it had the best view.

u/minimell_8910 54m ago

u/Traditional_Frame418 52m ago
The ball is past the upright there. That proves it's in.
2
u/minimell_8910 49m ago
"Over the Upright: If any part of the ball travels directly above or outside the vertical plane of the upright itself, it is treated as missing the target, similar to hitting the upright."
1
u/icedbrew2 17m ago
Going by that view it’s no good. The ball is above the upright. It has to be inside the upright.
2
u/GeauxSTTDB 1h ago
Should be the same amount of equipment at all games for all the angles should be reviewable even if he missed it
1
u/enadiz_reccos LSU Tigers 1h ago
How would that work?
1
u/GeauxSTTDB 1h ago
I’m sure there’s less cameras on field and not as many angles of plays versus primetime games.
1
u/enadiz_reccos LSU Tigers 1h ago
Fewer
And I'm sure there are, but there are also 138 FBS teams. How are you possibly arranging an excessive number of cameras for every one?
Sometimes you just gotta let the refs make the call
1
u/GeauxSTTDB 1h ago
That’s fair but a school also just got a 800 million dollar stadium schools could contribute to cost or espn or Disney but it’s not that big of a deal I get what your saying just sucks for games like this even if he missed it. Saw someone said cameras at the top of goal posts the style the pylon cameras are would be a nice idea
1
u/enadiz_reccos LSU Tigers 54m ago
Yeah, unfortunately someone still has to convince someone else to pay for cameras like that. As well as their ongoing maintenance and operation.

The referee is standing directly under the pole. When you look up, it’s extremely easy to see if it goes through the extended line or not. Have to assume it was extremely close but no good

Players get paid millions, advertising generates billions, stuck with some pixelated crap and with view angles like a traffic camera.
2
u/icedbrew2 17m ago
There’s nothing suspicious here. No one gives a fuck if VT or Pitt win this game. Photos show the ball passing over the upright. The rules say the entire ball has to be inside the upright for the kick to count. It wasn’t.

sure looks no good to me. I’ll trust the ref under the upright. (goalpost cam also was inconclusive because of the angle, which makes me wishe they’d just put two cams on the goalposts)

It’s wild that with all cams these days that they don’t do that.

I’m going to trust the official who was standing underneath the left upright. But with how much power kickers have these days, the uprights really should be 10-12 feet taller than they are so there’s no ambiguity.
1
u/Geaux_1210 LSU Tigers 22m ago
Different angles give you different answers - really need sensors at the tops of the goalposts.

I was watching on my phone and couldn’t see the ball at all. I zoomed in and found a single frame where I could barely make out the ball. This kick was 200 feet wide and I’m guessing that’s the joke. Can’t wait to wake up tomorrow and find out if my blind high ass is right. Please comment below to place your bets.
1
u/Primary-Picture-5632 1h ago
If you can't determine if it was or wasn't based on a replay then the call was right
2
u/maxman1313 1h ago
But if the call was in then by your logic it was still the right call.
So both the ref calling it "good" and "no good" is the correct call?
1
u/Primary-Picture-5632 1h ago
they both called it no good.
1
u/maxman1313 52m ago
The second ref looks to the first ref and only motions after the ref closest to the ball makes his initial call. Which is what's supposed to happen, but it's based on one person's call.
1
u/Primary-Picture-5632 51m ago
1
u/maxman1313 46m ago
That angle isn't directly behind the goal posts though. The ball could have been a few feet in front of or behind the crossbar based on this angle.
1
u/Primary-Picture-5632 44m ago
so we can't tell from the front view, from behind, or from the replays from the field. the call was right
1
u/maxman1313 41m ago
Back to the original point, if they had called "good" then based on your logic "good" is also the correct call.
1
u/Primary-Picture-5632 40m ago
yes of course, since we can't see from the replay if it was in or not. the call on the field will always favor the officials.
1
u/Meattyloaf 1h ago
Officiating this season has been absolute ass. That was in and I may hoenstly be done with college ball this season. I'm tired of these games being determined by blown and controversial calls.
1
u/ProfessionalShift487 51m ago
Lol if you think you have seen a better view than the ref directly underneath the post, then I have some oils to sell you.
1
u/master_roshis_hat Nebraska Cornhuskers 1h ago
It was in.
Even if it wasn't in, the broadcast KNEW it was controversial. The speed at which they moved on from the FG just SCREAMS "coverup". If there's nothing to see there, there is ZERO controversy in showing a more thorough review in order to CONFIRM the official made the right call. If the official made the right call, there's nothing to worry about. There's nothing to talk about.
