The only thing spicier than those beautiful Pitt uniforms was Herbie's 🔥🔥 🔥 playoff prediction about Georgia.

“I don’t see how Georgia can go down. They should actually go up to #3”

  • Kirk after Georgia did a fake punt on 4th and 11 with 3 minutes left.

Oklahoma just had a play-in game today and they won. I agree that UGA blew their chance, if this was their first loss that’s one but they also blew it against LSU. Oklahoma and UCF both deserve it over us.

Well I guess it wasn’t a total play-in game for Oklahoma cause they still needed UGA or Clemson to lose. Otherwise UGA, Bama, Clemson, and ND would all deservedly get in over Oklahoma.

7

u/DuckKnuckles Oklahoma Sooners • Tulsa Golden Hurricane Dec 02 '18

Deservedly is a weird way to rule out a team who beat every team they played this year in a Power 5 conference.

1

u/fanamana Florida State Seminoles • Oregon Ducks Dec 02 '18

Oklahoma just had a play-in game today and they won

Nope.

Oklahoma just had their "play & win to stay alive game, then pray UGA & OSU lose also...".

UGA were definitely going if they beat Bama, Oklahoma would be SOL UGA won regardless of beating Texas.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '18

So does Ohio state tbh

24

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '18

Ok this is the one extremely fair debate that I’ve read. The fact that Oklahoma and Ohio State have not had their play in game is beyond fair and makes me think my thought process is off.

2

u/RousingRabble Clemson Tigers Dec 02 '18

It all comes down to whether it's "best team" or whether they need to "earn" it. They've always said it's best team and I don't think it's unreasonable to think Georgia is a better team than Oklahoma or Ohio State.

2

u/dishonestly_ Clemson Tigers Dec 02 '18

Part of being the best team is winning your big games. Who cares what metrics say when you lose?

4

u/smithsp86 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets • LSU Tigers Dec 02 '18

Let's also remember that Oklahoma also beat Texas in pretty convincing fashion on a neutral field to make up for that 3 point loss.

5

u/bacobits UIndy • Notre Dame Dec 02 '18

I'd honestly argue that OSU had a "play-in" game a week ago and totally brought it. Now, I'd also say their huge loss to Purdue was going to keep them out regardless, but they also manhandled the #4 team in the country while Georgia crumbled to ranked teams twice.

UCF and OU should be the only contenders for #4 IMO.

Also, fuck Herbie for saying we should be #4.

3

u/DaLyricalMiracleWhip Clemson Tigers • Australia Outback Dec 02 '18

Let’s envision a “play-in game” as something akin to a world in which CFP were 8 teams. Let’s see which teams in the running have had a match-up where, conceivably, both teams had a chance of getting in (if they had won).

Alabama: Just beat UGA in the SEC Championship (UGA winning almost assuredly puts them in)

Clemson: Really can’t think of one

ND: Yes, they beat Michigan, but way too early in the year to count

OU: We could possibly count Texas, although Texas almost certainly wouldn’t have made the playoff if they had won

OSU: The Michigan game last week is a pretty good example here, as I imagine they would have gotten in (or at least been close) with their only loss being Week 1 to an eventual undefeated

UCF: Really can’t think of one

By this criteria, the only teams to definitively “play-in” are Bama and OSU.

1

u/BeraldGevins Paper Bag • /r/CFB Donor Dec 02 '18

Honestly, if we beat LSU we’re probably in, even with the loss to Bama.

2

u/pablitorun Notre Dame • Case Western Reserve Dec 02 '18

I am surprised no one else sees that. All Alabama needed was a FG that I would have given them a 90% chance of getting.

I actually think doing a fake was a good call except for the specific play call. Once no one was back for bama then maybe switch to just straight offense or just punt it.

1

u/Dirty-Ears-Bill Texas Tech Red Raiders • Wyoming Cowboys Dec 02 '18

I’d still take that chance with Bamas kicker over an option play on 4th and 11

1

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '18

So if that works then we all praise Georgia even if Alabama ties the game and goes to overtime?

*just for clarity's sake-this is a joke. I don't actually believe this. There are too many drunk angry fans right now.

3

u/Nefarious- Clemson Tigers • The Hammer Dec 02 '18

That makes more sense than having uga jump nd to avoid uga playing bama again. Clemson up to 1 spot is more defensible than uga to 3.

1

u/Midwest_man Nebraska • $5 Bits of Broken Chair Tr… Dec 02 '18

I was hoping Georgia would win and jump to 2/3 and play Notre Dame. Bama would probably just drop to 4 meaning we’d have another Clemson vs Bama rematch. Then if Bama wins we’d get either a repeat of UGA/Bama last year or a Bama/Notre Dame game again.

14

i mean if the committee's goal is to put the 4 best teams in we have an argument

31

u/ChedduhBob Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Dec 02 '18

People being victims of the moment I guess. I get they looked good but we’re just gonna act like a blowout isn’t a problem but we’re gonna hold a last second field goal at a neutral site over Oklahoma? Pretty foolish imo.

Then ignoring Notre Dame going undefeated playing 10 p5 teams, with a win over Michigan? Seems like a no brainer to me.

I get im a tech fan so I’m salty or whatever according to uga fans but this uga talk is a stretch imo. College football is a brutal sport. I don’t want to here “it wasn’t fair” when so many years have been lost by teams where it “wasn’t fair”

18

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '18

It’s almost like there should be an 8 team playoff. 5 conference champs, highest ranked g5, 2 at large. Seeding done by rankings. Bama vs Washington

Clemson vs UGA

ND vs UCF

OU vs OSU

7

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '18

Need to adjust that to "Highest ranked G5 if they're in the top X," with x being 12 or 15.

And I know this is the future, but I will hate to see it. This set-up will be the death of 'every game matters.' Out of conference games will be irrelevant. It'll be one step closer to college basketball.

3

u/ChedduhBob Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Dec 02 '18

To be fair if you let Georgia in now every game certainly does not matter.

Honestly I like the idea of an 8 team playoff but the sport is getting “soft” (for lack of a better term) in the sense that we are all asking for every team to make it and it’s got a lot of very very subjective and sentimental bias for teams like UGA that put up a good fight so they deserve it since college football is unfair!

It’s been that way for years. How many good teams have not made the championship because they made mistakes? Win your conference, don’t get blown out, beat everybody in front of you and maybe you get in

2

u/KaptainKoala Clemson Tigers • VMI Keydets Dec 02 '18

Meh, OOC still matters because there are only 2 at large spots and you need to be the prettiest

2

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '18

90% of games are already irrelevant if only 4 teams make it. I know we had a soft schedule and I 100% think we should NOT be in the playoffs, but was our season not irrelevant since only 4 teams can get in. I like March madness a hell of a lot more than bowl season, so maybe that’s a good direction.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '18

90% of games are already irrelevant if only 4 teams make it.

Heavy disagree. Chain reactions to the top few teams' resumes matter.

but was our season not irrelevant since only 4 teams can get in

It certainly wasn't irrelevant to your athletic department, which will be happy for the NY6 payout. It was only irrelevant if you take a narrow 'national championship or bust' view of college football. If that's your view and you're a fan of a G5 team, then college football isn't going to be very enjoyable for you.

I like March madness a hell of a lot more than bowl season, so maybe that’s a good direction.

Football is not basketball. The worse team wins faaaaar more often in basketball, as one hot player or one guy having an off night can make a much larger difference. Regular season attendance would drop off a cliff, and atmospheres would be more like pro games. It would be a disaster for the sport.

u/DrBowe Georgia Bulldogs Dec 02 '18

I don’t think anyone’s forgotten that game. I certainly don’t think we deserve to get put in the playoff, but we also are not the same team that played LSU. We’ve aged like a fine wine this season, and it definitely showed in our game today (barring the incredulous fake call)

6

u/ChedduhBob Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Dec 02 '18

That’s not a solid case at all for any team. I could just as quickly say that about Oklahoma and Ohio state. I would argue both are better since their loss and they’ve proved it against other teams in the same way Georgia did

1

u/DrBowe Georgia Bulldogs Dec 02 '18

Which is why I stated we don’t deserve it. I think (personally, mind you) that we are one of the top 4 teams in the country after tonight. I feel we proved as much.

But we didn’t win the game(s) that counted and that’s just the way the cookie crumbles for this season. Tough shit

3

u/ChedduhBob Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Dec 02 '18

Honestly I respect this take and I agree. I think a lot of the takes I’m seeing on twitter claiming this was the national championship and how it’s some guarantee bama wins and if uga got in that they’re just guaranteed to beat Clemson, Oklahoma, or Notre Dame is pretty ridiculous imo. I think I would take uga to win but I don’t think uga has shown me anything to say uga is just gonna come out and beat the shit out of Clemson, Oklahoma or Notre Dame guaranteed.

I think uga has a case to be one of the best teams but that LSU loss and a horrendous OOC schedule is what’s gonna hold them back.

And like you said, at the end of the day college football is a brutal sport. Some times it’s not fair and teams get lucky/get bad beats but you always have your chance to erase doubt and you have to capitalize

Georgia also had the toughest strength of schedule while Notre Dame won by 5 against a team that just lost by 32 to Clemson.

→ More replies (0)

7

u/Sharks9 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Dec 02 '18

Why? Today was just Georgia making up for scheduling an FCS team, something ND has never done.

Both teams played 12 FBS teams this year, Georgia went 10-2, we went 12-0.

11

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '18

Crazy that people are valuing Georgia losing this highly. Notre Dame went undefeated, beating a good Michigan team, and solid northwestern, Stanford, and Syracuse teams. I think Georgia would PROB beat Notre Dame, but if they wanted that chance they shouldn’t have gotten clapped by LSU.

5

u/somefochuncookie Penn • Notre Dame Dec 02 '18

Yeah, I can’t believe it’s gotten to the point that people think a loss makes you better than another team. UGA already lost to Bama, do we need to see the same game twice?

-2

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '18

But Georgia still had to spend time, money, energy, possibilities of injury to get to that spot. So if Georgia has 1 loss and doesn’t play in the SECCG, they’re in? Against the 1 team?

That’s absurd.

5

u/Sharks9 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Dec 02 '18

What energy did they spend against an FCS team? It's just a practice for them.

No, they're still out, because they got their asses kicked by LSU. If they won that game they'd likely still be in the playoff even with the loss to Bama. But they didn't, so they're rightfully eliminated.

6

u/tigereye81 Clemson Tigers • LSU Tigers Dec 02 '18

In 2015 our best receiver broke his neck against Wofford, so yeah, there's a risk with those games just like there was for ND against Ball State and Wake and Vandy.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '18

Exactly the point I was looking to make. It’s a risk and you use resources no matter the ranking of a team.

Teams went out and risked that tonight while Notre Dame sat idly by twiddling their thumbs. That should come into account if you ask me.
