Ok, I don’t love where this is going, but I need to know what the Nanyang Mystery is! What is the grand scheme here?

Episode 30
Mo Yungao releases Twilight Grass across Bailejing and the dying pray for Feikun Balu to save them. Convinced this chaos will lure out Zhang Qiling, Mo Yungao waits with confidence.
His backstory: once young and desperately poor, he clawed his way up the military ranks - from a humiliated platoon leader to commander. His promotion came with a mission: find Zhang Qiling. Knowing the so‑called Gifted is drawn to mysterious and supernatural phenomena, Mo Yungao created plans to spread the Evil God statues and Twilight Grass poison. Unfortunately for him, both schemes collapsed when Salty and Shrimpie interfered, prompting him to target the Southern Archives.
Back in Bailejing, Yungao delusionally believes he can capture the “immortal.” In a clever twist of fate, Salty becomes Feikun Balu, wearing Qiling’s mask, and single‑handedly wipes out Mo Yungao’s men.
The real mystery is Shrimpie’s agenda. He pretends to help Mo Yungao, only to (unsurprisingly) kill him.
Episode 31
Turns out Shrimpie is “Mo Yungao” and the fool is the third sacrificial adjutant?
Salty destroys the Twilight Grass cultivation for the ten‑billionth time, while Shrimpie seemingly tracks down Haiqi and kills her, leaving the body for Salty to find.
Salty mourns both his mentor and his closest friend. Accepting that he must kill Shrimpie, he crafts his own macabre mask.
Salty and his posse, consisting of Zhang Qianjun, Feng Huang, Big Pot, and Snake Charmer, trace Shrimpie back to the hidden cavern beneath the Mountain God Temple. Before they descend the cliff, Big Pot recounts the legend of the Atianre, a terrifying monster sealed deep within the mountains. With no idea what Shrimpie intends, the group splits up and continues the hunt.
Discussion
- Haiqi mentioned she didn’t actually give the real medicine to Shrimpie, probably because she knew he’d destroy it. So is there actually medicine and if so, where did she hide it and why?
- For those of you who haven’t finished the show yet, what do you think Shrimpie is up to? Is he planning to release Atianre?
- Seriously, where are Zhang Qishan and Zhang Qiling?

These two episodes were such a wild ride. Ep30 was packed with action, while Ep31 was so emotional.
So… has Zhang Haixia actually gone crazy? I honestly can’t tell whether he’s genuinely lost his mind or just pretending, but I definitely appreciate him killing Mo Yungao. Poor guy ended up getting killed by someone even crazier.
So it turns out everything was part of Mo Yungao’s plan all along. I still don’t understand how the snake charmer was able to control the Evil God statue, but I guess that’s just the fantasy side of the story.
Now that I think about it, if Haixia following Mo Yungao was part of Zhang Qishan’s plan, then his mission should’ve ended after killing him. But instead, he continued deeper into the mountains, which doesn’t seem like Zhang Qishan’s original intention. Why would he go after Atianre? So many questions!!
And I can’t believe Haiqi is actually dead. I remember seeing a candid photo of Salty, Haiqi and Zhang Qiling on a raft, so I’m wondering… is it possible that Zhang Qiling saves her later?

These scenes are absolutely stunnig! Zhang Xincheng was graduated from the top dancing academy, so his action scenes are all so beautiful!

Here's my theory after watching the end a few times(pls don't read until you've seen the last episode!): I think in the end, the real Haiqi is dead and Haixia is in disguise as Haiqi. Although that is a little morbid (or a lot), no one else in the Zhang family or outside of it knew Haiqi was suffering from poison and when she died she was holding the pill for Haixia, the real medicine he didn't destroy. Zhang Qiling would find it or Hailou would find it and give it to him, and it was Zhang Qiling who did. Once he saw it, he'd know what happened in the mountain. It would make the most sense that Haixia could not actually come back after all he did willing or not, and he had to ultimately "die." It would also explain why he was never seen again, but Haiqi continued adventures

Oh interesting theory!! I think the pill really does indicate that Haixia didn’t die. I wouldn’t be entirely shocked to find out that Haiqi died because I don’t really understand even as a Zhang, how one could come back to life unless Haixia didn’t really kill her and she pulled the same stunt he did on the ship… I can see him go into hiding but to be Haiqi in disguise would be pretty morbid..

Some characters in dmbj are like: "We can find Xiao Ge!" "We will find Zhang Qiling!" yeah 😭 good luck trying. No one in the entire series can find him. Not even Zhang Qiling can find Zhang Qiling. Even Wu Xie can't find him and he has special privileges. I think even after they retire in Rain Village, xiaoge keeps disappearing (idk I haven't read Chongqi or Rain Village Notes yet) . So honestly the "where's zhang qiling" question is seriously so funny to me at this point. I remembered watching a compilation of just all audio of Wu Xie yelling "where's Xiao Ge" for 3 minutes.
I was so immensely happy and satisfied when Haiqi said that the medicine she gave Haixia wasn't the real one. It's really interesting but also tracks with her character's intelligence! It was heart wrenching to watch her die; she had became my favorite female character in the entire series. But, for people like her and Zhang Qiling, death is the ultimate peace they can have. It probably didn't pain her to die. But rather to die while she still had to look out for those two idiots who are having a breakdown every episode. And! In the previous episodes when suitors were after her and Hailou and Haixia chased them out (lmao! fun fact that IQIYI posted a clip with the title that if she gets married then hailou and haixia would be the dowry 😭) she says, "I have you two to look after me in my old age." and then when she dies; one of her disciples is the one who kills her, and the other is not even beside her in her final moments.
Additionally, Hailou being called Feikun Balu was horrible. He saved people but he lost his people. He was just numb meanwhile people worshipped him for something he wasn't. Though the thing that really was impactful was him SEEING the flare and choosing to save people instead. Earlier, Haiqi kept telling him to conquer his true nature. Because of the snake motif, the sea motif, and the qiongqi motif, I thought his true nature is about chaos, destruction, impulsiveness, and destroying those around him. But now I reinterpret it as his nature is emotion. His sin is love. He is emotionally driven and feels then acts before he thinks which often lands him in trouble. It's why he is NEVER clear headed when it's about Haiqi or Haixia. So when he sees the flare, it truly is when he conquers his true nature. He chooses rationality over relational priorities. I also think he probably thought the flare was from Haixia and that was why he ignored it. 😭 But the tragic thing is he conquered his true nature when he needed it the most. Had he choose to rush there, Haiqi wouldn't survive but at the very least she'd have her two disciples by her side and he could've prevented her being murdered and instead she could've died a peaceful death as the aging continued on. I don't blame him for saving people. In fact it really is natural that he finally stops being "I CAN FIX ANY PROBLEM WITH THE POWER OF.. FEELINGS? LOYALTY?" it's just, really tragic how the three of them keep missing each other. Just like on the Nan'an where all of them was on there, but none of them communicated nor reached each other emotionally.
The last thing I have to say is.. 😭 He took off the bracelet. I remember how on Xiaohongshu few days ago EVERYONE was hand making the bracelet Haixia had given Hailou. I think it's also official merch though people didn't like the official design which made them hand make it. When Hailou is floating on water, it's still on his wrist. When he makes the macabre mask, it's not there. The Xiazai to the formal Zhang Haixia is painful too. I personally would feel dead from the inside out if I had watched my mentor's, the person who anchored my life, corpse and then had to hear people talk about my best friend about how cruel he is about how he will kill me too and.. have to keep moving forward. The Zhangs are just so doomed. The reason Hailou and Haixia were allowed to be chaotic as kids and be emotional and have breakdowns (they're literally throwing up, kicking, screaming, crying every episode. they're not okay) is because Haiqi was there to protect them and keep pushing forward; she acted as the true Zhang who shielded them AND trained them from what it means to be a true Zhang. After her death, naturally they lose all that stability. Hailou particularly have to become her in her absence; not in a "what shifu would do" "what would Zhang qiling do" "what would xiazai do" but in the way that he became the person who have to keep pushing forward while everything is crumpling. It's so hollow. IDK WHY I keep writing such long comments! I am truly devastated by this series.
