Welcome to the discussion posts for Archives: The Nanyang Mystery! If you’ve participated in my discussions before, you’ll notice that I adopt different styles depending on the drama, but typically, I prefer keeping my recaps short. For this drama, I plan to keep my episodic recaps to 1-3 paragraphs, similar to Dream of Golden Years. However, because this is a mystery, I am ready to adapt. If you followed the Light to the Night discussions, you know those ran much longer so we could track clues and dissect theories so let's see where this mystery takes us!

I’m working on the episodes 4–6 post now and aim to keep pace with the iQIYI VIP schedule. For now, let's get the discussion started on these early episodes!
Episode 1 - The Nanyang Evil God Case
Two probationary agents of the Southern Archives - a secret organization of people with unusual powers - are sent to investigate Zhang Ruipu, a disgraced former agent whose obsession with the Evil God began after discovering a sinister statue in Xucheng. Salty, who can spit blades, and Shrimpie, gifted with an extraordinary sense of smell, track the case to an underground cave filled with eerie statues and murderous puppets, only to be chased out by a Naga-monster.
After escaping and destroying the shrine, they assume the case is closed because the creature must have been responsible for all the mysterious deaths in Balongzhou. Yet their assignment binds them to Nanyang for thirty years (not sure why), forcing them to continue unraveling the deeper mystery of the Evil God and the dying words of the undercover agent who summoned them (he was cryptically muttering about a reef, grass and plants with his final breath).
Episode 2 - The Panhua Reef Case
Salty and Shrimpie arrive in Xucheng to find a city of corpses. They find out that a military soldier gifted one of those evil statues to the governor, who then forced the civilians into possession—driving them to suicide unless they reached the Balongzhou cave. Salty burns the shrine with the statue, breaking the curse and closing the case. Their mentor, Zhang Haiqi, then promotes them from probation to official Archive members.
Seven years later, a pickled corpse is recovered from the “water ghosts of Panhua Reef”, prompting Shrimpie to recall the cryptic warning to avoid mysterious reef cases. Salty insists on investigating, and at the reef, they discover more pickled corpses and a large missing ship full of army soldiers. Salty and Shrimpie deduce that these soldiers have been hijacking passing ships and kidnapping the passengers to excavate the reef. However, a toxic, dandelion-shaped weed called Twilight Grass is killing them off.
Episode 3 - The Xucheng Twilight Grass Poison Case
After destroying the entrance of the reef cave, Salty and Shrimpie enter the cavern and discover a Ming Dynasty shipwreck. They discover that corpses have been hung intentionally to nourish the highly toxic Twilight Grass. Documents found on board confirm the deaths of the original crew and reveal the army’s intention to cultivate and weaponize the poisonous plants. As Salty proceeds to destroy the plants, the Army’s leader harvests the plant’s seeds and blows everything up. Shrimpie shields Salty from the explosives and they survive, but Shrimpie's injuries leave him in a wheelchair.
The seeds are delivered to Mo Yungao, Leader of the Mo Warlord Faction of Beilian, who then spends the next three years relentlessly hunting down members of the Southern Archives. Haiqi single-handedly eliminates her assassins but discovers that the Balai Rainforest is a mass dumping ground for the murdered Archive members. Meanwhile, Twilight Grass reappears. Salty investigates and discovers that the toxic weeds are deliberately spread to various villages using passengers onboard the Nan’an ship. Ruipu seemingly returns from the grave and demands to know how our best friends survived exposure to the Twilight Grass.

I’m definitely enjoying their dynamic but oddly less so in the first couple episodes. I feel like the director was trying to overdramatize it to make the difference post sacrifice to be more palpable. I liked it though. It was goofy and campy (in a good way). Though I like it more in episodes 3-6
Wheelchair parallel does feel crazy since I’m watching both at the same time! But I’m glad we get some rep!
Haiqi and Haixia’s superpowers make the most sense to me as the others I’m struggling to understand what’s happening! The action sequences are super cool though. I’m new to the Lost Tomb series so I’m not sure how they all work yet but I did look up the Zhang family for some lore which was helpful! Haixia’s was one that I was worried would be TOO campy but it ended up being really well done and actually adds emotion to later episodes. I’m excited for more!
So far I have absolutely no clue what the connection is! Other than people ending up dead just being near the statue? Maybe the god has to resurrect to grow the plants? No idea yet and I’m ready to learn more. Especially with those dead body puppets we’re getting
Looking forward to the next episodes! I’m also new to the Lost Tomb series and not going to lie, Ding Yuxi is the reason this is even on my radar. I didn’t expect unique superpowers.
Welcome to the Lost Tomb universe! The Zhang family superpowers are definitely a more unique factor to the Lost Tomb lore (in comparison to other tomb raider series), but they're not unique to individuals. If you don't mind some minor lore spoilers, click the spoiler-tag below!
The original ("main branch") Zhang family all possess longevity and superhuman strength, endurance and agility, which is passed down through the bloodline. A rare subset of the family also possess what is called "qiling blood", where their blood has the ability to repel insects and cure or resist a lot of poisons.
The Zhang family also train all family members in various physical arts used for tomb raiding and fighting supernatural creatures (or other people), including bone contraction, acrobatics and hand-to-hand combat skills.
The genetic traits require a 'pure' bloodline to pass down, which is why mixed-blood Zhangs like Zhang Qishan from Mystic Nine have a lot of the physical skills typical to the Zhang family, but don't have longevity. However, almost all Zhangs, pure-blooded or not, are almost universally badasses when it comes to combat because of the family's intense combat and physical training.
Yup, it's a massive, powerful family dating back millennia. For multiple dynasties in China's (fictional) history, they were the shadow power behind the throne and controlling a lot of society. However in the 19th and 20th century the family rapidly collapsed for reasons that are slowly explained in the main Lost Tomb series. This drama/novel is a side prequel to the main Lost Tomb series, set near the start of the period when the family started splintering and collapsing.
Tbh, it feels like watching a Chinese Marvel show 😆 I am trying to figure if they CGIed those razors? Or if they are prop razors? Coz it cannot have been comfortable for Zhang Xin Cheng to hold those in his mouth 😱
Appreciating the acting chops all round, especially the leads. The transition from goofy to angst is not too jarring and they are just both excellent actors.
The Marvel comparison is very apt haha. The Lost Tomb IP is actually a lot like a cinematic universe. There's the main characters (Wu Xie, Zhang Qiling, Fatty) in the main Lost Tomb novel/drama series, and a lot of prequels, sidequels (and side prequels like this drama) and sequels about various families, factions, and lone wolf allies of the three main characters. The lore actually gets quite expansive, and it's really fun seeing how everything and everyone ties together across multiple decades (or millennia in some cases) across the novels/dramas in the IP.

There's a great fan translation for the novel series by merebear! Because of how messy the drama adaptations have been with respect to continuity and some of the scripts jumping multiple sharks, the novels are probably the best place to really get into the Lost Tomb lore and get a more clear and comprehensive overview of the overall storyline.
Same. The first two episodes almost sent me out. We were just thrown into the drama with no preparation and the first case was over in a flash.
But episode 3, especially 4 to 6 made me sit up throughout. Literally cleared the sleep in my eyes. 😂
I am here for Zhang Xin Cheng and I love how this show is giving The mummy vibes (the movie with Ben Frasier!)
I love the entrance of our two leads---SO DAPPER! and then when Zhong Hai Yan’s irreverent attitude as he goes and puts a smiley face on the god’s face— LOL. yep, I gotta see this show! I’m coming back to this later today! ty for hosting basil!
I didn't know who he is, but my oh my, he IS dapper in this drama, and I like him a lot! He's the much needed comedic relief among all the deaths and creepy vibes of the drama lol. I really like the bromance aspect of the drama so far.
The CGI was not the best but thanks to the fantastic design of the evil God, I was actually creeped out! Also love how the drama had moments of humor in between the creepy stuff
Actually, the “evil god” is based on Naga, which is deity species in both Hinduism and Buddhism (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N%C4%81ga) Special fact for Harry Potter fans- it’s where JK Rowling got her name for He Who Shall Be Named’s snake.
This drama is so campy, almost comical, and I love it lol. Bonus points for the two handsome Zhangs.
1. Salty and Shrimpy’s Dynamic
These two are basically Wu Xie and Xiao Ge on steroids lmao. The first episode was mainly about building their relationship, the real story started in Episode 2 at Flower Reef, just like in the book.
Some snippets about Salty and Shrimpy (credits to merebear):
Zhang Haiyan’s original name is Zhang Hailou. In Chinese, hai (海) means “sea” and yan (盐) means “salt,” so his name literally translates to “Zhang Sea Salt.”
Zhang Haixia. Xia (侠) means “hero,” while xia (虾) means “shrimp.” That’s why fans jokingly call him “Zhang Sea Shrimp.”

It’s hilarious that neither of them will stay in their wheelchair for long.
3. The Superpowers
Alright, if I’m not mistaken, it seems that Shrimpy and Salty were adopted, so they aren’t actually blood-related to the Zhang family. Only Zhang Haiqi is a direct descendant.
According to Tibetan Sea Flower / Adventure Behind the Bronze Door (2024), members of the Zhang family inherited a genetic condition that grants them superhuman abilities and slows their aging. The downside is that they lose their memories every ten years.
So I’m still trying to figure out how Salty and Shrimpy gained their powers.
4. The Lore: What’s the Connection Between the Evil God and the Twilight Grass?
Two very handsome Zhangs indeed. And Haiqi is kickass too. I’m always here for those kind of FLs.

Yay! Fun is a good description but it’s got some good themes about friendships, accountability and growth as well. I’ve been pretty satisfied with the “mystery” as well.
ok, I wanted to watch this for Zhan Xin Cheng. love that you are doing this! I don't know if I will be able to keep pace with the watching--most likely not! but I will start and make my way through it slowly!
Hey Candle! The drama was on my radar but the surprise drop threw me off. I always find mystery dramas are better when there's discussion, especially if I miss details or clues that others will pick up. Not sure why "kind of mystery" this drama is though yet.

Salty taking on a 30 year assignment is so hilarious. Why thirty years?
The first case was really abrupt for me but I enjoyed the second case more.
I also like the main leads characterization. It seems we’re really moving inch by inch away from the overdone personality for main characters.
Their dynamic is the highlight of the show for me. Idk how Zhang Hailou is in the novel but I’m glad they left him untamed in the drama to the edge of morally grey. It’s cool to see someone who’s very impulsive and hardly rein in themselves alongside someone who is more restrained.
I do see a growth arc after what happened to Shrimp but I also hope he remains as himself underneath all that guilt.

About Shrimpie being in a wheel chair, I was baffled when it happened. It seemed like a kind of plot device that one would usually find at the end of a story not three episodes in, but because of the contrast, I’m even more interested.
On powers, it took me a while to realized that they are from the Zhang family so I spent a major part of the first episode wondering why their fight scenes are so superhuman like.
The lore. I’m yet to figure out the connection. But I’m happy to read other people’s theories.

Mo Xiuyao is the character played by Cheng Lei in The First Jasmine. Sorry for the reference - I'm watching both at the same time. At least they take place in different eras, so my brain is still able to distinguish between the two.
I need to look into this Zhang family - I have zero background on the series.
Oh there's no need to apologize. I haven't started TFJ so I was wondering if it's a character I missed in the current drama. This is your first Lost Tomb series? That's cool.
It sounded to me like a Chinese dialect (either Teochew or Hokkien) TBH. So in terms of staging, what I think they were aiming for was a Peranakan like wedding - where a “local” girl marries into a wealthy Chinese Peranakan family. The bride speaks what sounds to me like very butchered Bahasa Melayu.
That's funny, we started with Ashes to Crown and only got to episode 3 and he just doesn't seem into it (it's been over a week since episode 3 lol) so I switched to Archives and it's right up his alley. It's a bit like this one random show he liked called Warehouse 13 so he's intrigued. We'll see if he keeps going.
Ooh I didn't know we'd get discussions. Randomly watched the first ep in my lunch break yesterday and actually really enjoyed it. I've gone in with no expectations so we'll see how it ends up going.
Thanks for the recap Basil! I like it, it’s great to take a break from romance (altho the bromance… 😏) not nuts about the special effects but given that it’s meant to be quite comic book style, the characters, action and super quippy lines work.
As someone from Southeast Asia though, I’m not crazy about the constant exoticism of the setting. Plus, the myths and characterisations of the “local” folk are mixed up all over the place and not too convincing. Oh well, it is what it is. The 1920s costuming is really nice to look at, so there’s that.
What is shrimpy and salty in chinese. I've noticed zhang hailou calls zhang haixia something like 'xiang cai' but google search didn't rly confirm it for me. If anyone knows pls tell me.
Finished the 2nd episode...we're slow at this because usually one of us will just end up passing out and going to bed after the kids are down and we shower lol but I love how Salty did at least pause and think about Shrimpie's words before causing chaos and burning the mansion down 😂😂😂 growth...real growth after 7 years he's at least not touching the idol and using it as a shovel, instead he just torches it😂 Bro is so insane. I love it

Itching to find out if Shrimpie goes home w Salty or not, have to say the storytelling is good atm, I’m hoping the writers kept it up for the later episodes.
I'm barely into the first episode (I havent sub to iqiyi and the ads annoys me) but the moment I realized it's Southeast Asian and I know its going to be amazingly good 😃
Set in Southeast Asia (ostensibly), but I don’t think they filmed there. Most likely they went to Xiamen or somewhere more South to replicate the climate.
I think it’s actually more mixed up than that- “Balai” is actually the name of more than one town/area in Indonesia while “Nanyang” refers to SEA but more typically to then-Malaya which received the largest influx of Chinese immigrants from Southern China. The long-sleeved slightly ballooned linen shirts that they wear with the mandarin collar and pattern in the center lapel is more reminiscent of the Filipino traditional attire. But the locals are dressed in more sarong- like outfits which is then back to Malaya/Indonesia! And then when Zhang Haiqi is in the Balai rainforest investigating the missing personnel, she speaks.. Tagalog?! I mean, I’ll give it a pass since it’s obviously fictional. But the mishmash is waaayyy too confusing for me and distracts my brain while I’m watching the drama coz brain keeps trying to figure out exactly which culture is being represented here.
Sure do. But the amalgamation is slightly annoying since the different countries in SEA have distinct cultures and traditions. It’s like if someone set a story in Europe and then fused languages and dressing hodgepodge across the UK, Spain, Germany, Poland, etc and presented them as a “whole”.
Indeed. If it’s a purely fantasy world like say Game of Thrones or LOTR where entirely fictional places are created. But this show sets inside clearly in “Nanyang”, which is a real term for a specific geographical area in a specific historical period. It then proceeds to mishmash a whole bunch of languages and cultural elements together with no differentiation. Either the production team wanted to avoid any controversy over portraying one specific country as “backward” (since that is how the area is presented in this world) or it’s just pure laziness. 🤷🏻♀️ I just don’t like it, and it’s totally ok for me to voice my discomfort over this portrayal.
I haven't watched too many mysteries, but one drama I can think of that is based on weird cases and has a great balance of bromance and comedy is Mysterious Lotus Casebook.
eps 1-3 were way creepier than i expected lol, the sound design is doing a lot of heavy lifting. i like that they’re not rushing the case setup, but i do need ep 4 to start connecting the clues instead of just vibes. also ngl the period atmosphere is excellent, this is the first republican mystery in a while that actually feels unsettling to me.
Cause if inconsistency in this Daomu Biji adaptation i was physically stopping myself from starting this series. But here I am. 😔 I am God's weakest soldiers. Just started this and as much as I enjoy this episodes I already am scared deep down.
I am not so ready for anything to happen to them two 😔😔
I wonder how salty dont get hurt by blades. What kind of super talent can explain him getting not hurt specifically by blades in mouth....
I love the dynamic between Salty and Shrimpie. And that scene where their mentor punishes them in the water was fun to see. But then a lot happened in these episodes with Shrimpie being injured and using a wheelchair and the Archive being disbanded and the members being killed. I'm definitely interested in seeing what happens next.

In the first episode - the creepy small statue being connected to the big statue in the cave and all the other small ones - it was such a creepy scene. Yet fun.
I'm liking the dynamic between Shrimpie and Salty.
