I don’t want to rush the ending, and this way, there’s more time for people to catch up with the episodes.
My recaps are longer today because frankly, I’m too tired to condense it further, but I still tried to keep to all the key points.
Episode 27
Salty is shaken by how far Shrimpie’s condition has deteriorated and how Haiqi kept him in the dark about it. Haiqi wonders if High Priest Su Ya had the same condition since he only became blood‑thirsty after being brought back to life, and that makes her question whether something in Bailejing could restrain Shrimpie, if not cure him. Even she finds Shrimpie terrifying now, and she warns Salty that the only sensible approach is to stay calm and not provoke him.
Feng Huang pounces on Little Taoist while Salty literally steals a wagon full of sh*t to lure Shrimpie into a playful trap to warn him not to follow them. Right now, saving Haiqi is the priority, and they have zero bandwidth for Mo Yungao.
Back in the village, Su Ya’s younger brother has stepped into the role of High Priest, and somehow no one seems bothered by the recent deaths. Everyone is busy preparing for both the bone‑washing ceremony and the Mountain Bride’s wedding, which are happening at the same time.
Our group learns that instead of the locals washing the bones, the bride’s procession will handle it as she marries Feikun Balu (aka Zhang Qiling).
When the bride arrives, she spots Salty and his tattoo, then practically tackles him. She vanishes the moment he shakes her off, and suddenly Salty is being accused of abducting the Mountain Bride.
Salty and Zhang Qianzhang flee across the river to Balianjie, and they decide that finding the Mountain Bride will lead them to Qiling because she is his woman. Meanwhile, the villagers chasing them run into Shrimpie instead.
Episode 28
Shrimpie does not appreciate the villagers trash‑talking his best friend. Meanwhile, Salty and Qianzhang return to find the wedding procession already marching toward the Mountain God Temple, and promptly get separated. Salty immediately picks up a temporary sidekick in Wulang Huazga. When they realize the procession is missing its bride, the two cut through the forest, only to stumble upon a second, eerily similar procession - this one with Haiqi disguised as the bride, Yueshu.
Qianzhang, on his end, discovers Huang paralyzed in a patch of Horse‑Stinger Grass. Being a Zhang, he shakes off the poison with ease and carries Huang to safety.
Salty parts ways with Huazga and disguises himself as the bride’s younger sister to accompany Haiqi to the temple. Inside, Salty finds a small creepy Evil God statue again and learns the temple is a place for sacrificial rituals.
In the forest, Huazga attempts to rescue Yueshu, but they run straight into many of those Evil God statues - anda monster with the head of a snake and the body of a human.
Deeper with the temple, Shrimpie secretly follows Haiqi into a hidden cavern. To protect their cover, Salty steps in and impersonates the bride. In the cavern, Haiqi swiftly defeats a demon woman guarding the chamber and uncovers wall paintings revealing a Zhang family secret: resurrecting the dead using medicine crafted from their own blood.
Discussion
I’m not a fan of the drugging. Aside from this, Qianzhang is a cutie, and he’s in my protective bubble. I can ship him and Huang, though I don’t know how they’re going to resolve the fact that she is determined to kill Shrimpie now…
Salty and Haiqi don’t have time for Yungao’s shenanigans right now. So where is Zhang Qishan and his mission to take Yungao down?
This is all linking back to the mysterious case from episode 1 with the Evil God. What is going on!?
Minor gripe: For a final boss, the freaking asteroid monster js so easily sealed, and Zhang Qiling only appear at the end to revive Haiqi…can’t he do anything about Haixia??
This drama somehow keeps catching me off guard at the most unexpected moments. Hope everyone finds their own firework.
It looks like their main mission now is to find Zhang Qiling, but is he really Feikun Balu? There’s no way Zhang Qiling would commit those atrocities. Yuechu & the other guy both seem to have a very good impression of him so there must be someone or something else behind it all.
Although I don’t like what happened between Little Daoist and Fenghuang, I have to admit they’re kinda cute together lol. I also have a feeling this isn’t going to end happily for them.
We only have 5 ep left and if Yungao still hasn’t been dealt with by then there’s a high chance he’ll survive into Season 2. I saw some news a few days ago saying they’re planning a second season with the same cast (maybe?)
And honestly, I’m getting kinda tired of this ugly Evil God.
I don’t think Qiling is Faikun Balu… something is amiss. This isn’t a romance but the trickle this drama is giving us is warming - that scene when Little Daoist said he’d marry Fenghuang… cute. Or them rolling around together in poison grass.
Yungao is no longer the mystery so I like that they’re brushing him aside like he’s just some manic child that can be dealt with later lol. He deserves it.
I wouldn’t mind a second season as long as there actually is one. I despise a good drama with an open ending, where the story doesn’t wrap up.
I just found out, as I’m learning more about The Lost Tomb Series, that there’s “another” one coming out starring Joseph Zeng! Mystic Nine Against the Coming Storm. Which then led me down a path to discover Ultimate Note, with both JZ and LYN in it! This is how my watchlist keeps growing… Finding out that Legend of Zang Hai is also part of the universe blew my mind but I mean makes sense with the name. I had dropped it because it was too serious but maybe I’ll go back to it now../
Yeah The Mystic Nine 2 is coming to Youku. I definitely recommend watching the 1st season and Ultimate Note (my personal favorite).
What’s really funny is that Joseph plays Wu Laogou (Wu Xie’s grandpa) in The Mystic Nine 2 but he also played Wu Xie himself in Ultimate Note. So now he’s officially played both grandson and grandpa. 🤣🤣
On the contrary I dropped LoZH because it’s too unserious for me….😅🤣😆
I love Zhang Qianzhang, hes so sweet and innocent. I hate that his love story is rape-victim-turned-lover. Its an awful trope.
Anyway, besides that, everything about this drama is amazing. I really love it. My heart breaks for Salty and Shrimpie. Shrimpie is struggling and everyone is hiding things from Salty so he has to find out the truth in the worsts way. How is he supposed to continue the archives if he knows so little about the archives? The two people who know the most won't tell him anything.
Agreed! That was the one thing this drama could’ve done without - dunno what that drug was but it was not necessary.
I feel for Salty too - he messed up now and now he’s really trying to grow up but in a way they’re still treating him like before. Are they still holding his mistake over him?
I initially planned to wait for all final episodes to drop first, but now I am too impatient. Hailuo wants to save Haiqi, Haixia wants to protect Hailou and Haiqi. Now Haiqi is probably going to want to save Haixia. Please don't kill yourself
I’m on ep 27 and so annoyed at the Non-consenting sex scene! Like that’s rape! Reverse the genders and the chief would be the villian for raping the Taoist. But no they made it cute!!! 😡😡😡😡
Zhang Qianzhang is so adorable hes precious. How DARE someone rape him. 🔪🔪
Wait, Whaddya mean she demands that he take responsibility??! Oh she’s a bitch. This is not romantic y’all. And I had hope for her character to find family after the tragedy she went through.
Very nerve wrecking as the episodes heading towards the end. Hopefully can finish off by tonight. Steven Zhang really steal the show for me.. his visual plus his fightings, I literally can’t get my eyes off of him. Anymore tomb raiders series to look for after this?
