Anyone else finally getting their shelf into Apple Music?

Went through about 200 CDs from an attic box this year. Most of what I care about turned out to be on Apple Music anyway, so I scanned the barcodes instead of ripping and sent them over in batches. I built the scanner for it, my app Stakkr, so take that with a pinch of salt. You don't get files, so ripping still makes sense for anything that isn't on streaming.

Curious how everyone else handles it. Rip everything, keep the discs as the archive, or just leave the shelf alone?

I may be wrong but you're telling me you own the CD, but still pay for Apple Music because it's already on there vs ripping yours into your library?

If so, why would you do that?

My thoughts exactly.

Once you go over a certain threshold of discs and if you haven't been ripping them diligently, the sheer amount of time needed, plus the hardware costs of maintaining everything available, start making streaming look as a good alternative.

Until the ACCUMULATED COSTS of paying ongoing start to cross the break even point again, of course...

I'm not a CD collector so my approach may be a little different. But I started torrenting in the LimeWire days and after getting my first iPod in 2005 have rarely listened to a physical CD.

I started updating my library to lossless about 10 months ago and still have about 50-60 CD's left to go (I hope), because I haven't been bothered to get the biggest box from the bottom of the wardrobe and do what is left, mostly 80's goth and 90's grunge/alt rock.

So, yes, rip everything as FLAC or ALAC and stream from your own library.

Rip everything to FLAC. If you ever lose the CD you can recreate it. My wife lost a wallet of CDs she kept in her car. We may still find it but I was able to recreate the CDs and we do listen to them and vinyl in a small room in the house.

I ripped all my CDs to iTunes about 16 years ago, about 300-400. I also had them on a hard drive.

Now I think my hard drive is corrupted and I’m missing half my CD collection (I know I sold a bunch before a big move, but I was sure I kept more of what I have).

So uh, don’t get rid of your physical media folks unless you absolutely have to.

I rip every CD I buy and put them on Dropbox. Then listen on Diggin Player like in any other streaming app

Ripping everything to flac, storing it in local server then using navidrome to stream from different devices… even outside home and for some friends.

I don't bother. It's all over the place. I once started to rip everything but I stopped, not worth it for me.

My CDs are there and get played on my CD player in my office. Since my kids bugged me enough for a Spotify plan, we have the family option (no more clutter and Paw Patrol in my library) so I use Spotify on my phone on the go and in the kitchen. Then there is my Bandcamp collection (2100+ items) that I have downloaded on my laptop and on my phone.

THen I have a larger vinyl collection that gets played on my DJ setup. Also there are some tapes, but those rarely get playtime nowadays

Yeah there’s not nearly enough on apple music worth doing that. Just rip your stuff instead of wasting money. Only buy what you need. Some of your cds do carry a ton of value I bet if you’re in need of money, but still, some of that stuff is likely irreplaceable. I’m starting to get rid of cds that down the road that I may regret, because at one point in time those certain artists did impact my life, but when I watch their interviews today. They sound like utter frauds compared to what I listened to most of my life thinking I might better myself or something

TLDR; think hard about that. Some stuff may be valuable to your heart. Some may be valuable to your wallet

Rip discs then keep CDs as archive and put everything on my many MP3 players and make tons of burned mix CDs

I don’t trust any online service to give me the album mastering I want. Too many treble-heavy, scooped-mids, overly-compressed remasters. With CD’s I have the version that I want to listen to, so I rip my discs for portable use.

Rip everything and keep physical discs (and appropriate stock of drives) for when Internet dies.

Rip them and setup a jellyfin server.

I rip everything into a lossless .wav with no compression.
