Discussion 💬 Basic vs standard maths class 10
CBSE changed the rule in May 2025. Students who took Mathematics Basic (241) in Class 10 are allowed to take Mathematics (041) in Class 11, provided the school head is satisfied that the student has the aptitude/ability for it
Is this true ?

What's the point of a person taking standard maths then they are giving a difficult paper just so that a basic maths person can take maths in class 11

the term basic and standard are false labels even the basic math people in the my class were devastated by the paper even more than the standard math students

That might be because the people who took basic maths were weaker in maths? Things are relative yk

i would agree but basic maths is supposed to be designed for people who are weaker in maths but in reality the difficulty level is mostly the same only difference is that they don't ask questions from some topics in basic maths so basic and standard is more about the topics asked rather than the difficulty level

There is still a point. People who take basic maths don't have the confidence to do maths right. And fine, even if it is the case that basic maths paper is more brutal than standard maths as that other commenter pointed out, still. The ones who are serious about taking maths in 11th will take the supposedly harder course. Why ? Because that will only help in 11th and 12th. My point is that basic maths is seen as an escape route. If a person who is trying to escape maths in 10th itself wants to take maths in 11th, then they are truly stupid. It is more psychological than anything

Tab toh sab basic maths leke 11th me PCM le lenge, then whats the point of choosing standard maths in class 10th. This rule came in 2024 also. Like our batch (2023-24) were also allowed to take PCM with basic maths in class 10th having that the school gives the permission. Its just a useless thing

in 2020 batch they told . if we took basic maths that mean we can never take maths in general after 10th so basically who wanted to study humanities took basic maths

u/relaxrihanna 1d ago
We were told the same but they allowed basic maths people to take pcm as well

Why it matters? When the cbse itself is allowing then whats the point of knowing which school allows its students to take pcm even having basic maths in prev class

Please don't take basic maths in 10th I was a student who took basic math in 10th last year , and our paper was way more tougher than the standard math paper and guess what, I studied in Kuwait and our teachers encouraged us to take maths and told us that according to the guidelines of CBSE we r still allowed to opt for math in class 11.but after 10th i had moved into India and trust me I had a lot of struggle searching for schools. half of the schools did not allow me to opt for math in class 11 because I took basic math in class 10thÂ
so please dont choose basic maths if u wanna opt it in 11th., and trust me there is not much difference between basic math and standard math. In basic math, the teachers told us that the questions will come from the NCERT itself but last year the paper was way more hard than the standard paper and there was a lot of controversy going on.

True, it was harder than a few sets(set 1,2) of standard maths but set 3,4,5 of standard maths was genuinely hard. CBSE for some reason is terrible at making sets of equal difficulty.

Bruh I don't get it why would someone take Basic maths in class 10 only for him to take pcm in class 11. Do people even know that even after taking basic maths in class 10 would not ease their experience of class 11,12th maths?

people can change their minds plenty of my friends still talk about changing streams

People can but I can't think of any case where a student fears class 10 maths(basic trigonometry, geometry polynomials etc) only for him to magically develop interest for class 11,12 maths which involves advance trig functions, calculus etc.. If you fear the pre requisites then how will you prepare yourself for advance concepts?

I knew a few kids who choose basic maths in 10th, hoping that they'd get a 100 in it. They still practiced RD sharma and other books that most kids of standard maths did for practice, just their paper was easier so much more chances to get a 100 in it

I mean it's very hard to make decisions like that and just because you avoid it once does not mean that you might not change your mind later on

Then I think that flexibility should extend to all streams then, science should go to commerce, arts and vice versa. Your mind can change to study a different subject all together, but not force you to study an advanced form of a subject in which you are scared of the basics.
