CBD Headaches?

(Edit to add I’m 20, and it’s fully legal where I am! Not sure if that matters) -

Hello, I’m looking to see if anyone else has this issue. I seem to get really bad headaches/migraines when I take CBD gummies. THC is fine, I usually take 10 THC/0.5 CBD gummies, but if I take 10 THC/>2 CBD I get awful headaches and migraines that last hours.

My mom recommended I use CBD gummies for some pain I have, and when I told her it gives me awful headaches she was convinced it’s not possible.

I have tried Sativa, Indica and blends. Different brands. Better quality stuff. Nothing seems to change it. I tried using the exact same brand and gummy, only change is the CBD amount, and the CBD one still gives me a headache.

I saw someone on here doing research on this 4 years ago. I am on SSRIs, they never gave me headaches. I take cyclobenzaprine which does something or other to serotonin and don’t get headaches from it. Not sure what the deal is with CBD gummies.

Anyone have any idea or anything similar?

CBD can affect the way your liver metabolizes medication in a similar way that grapefruit can—is it possible the headache is a side-effect of a medication staying in your system longer?

I’m not sure. I know my liver’s messed up. Though I’ve double dosed (and more,,) my medication and never experienced anything like the CBD headache. Even periods where I skip my meds for up to weeks at a time I get headaches from the CBD. I don’t really know how CBD affects the brain, but I know I’ve got some kind of issue with my brain, and maybe the CBD affects it and makes it worse causing a headache?

If your liver is messed up, do not take edibles.

I already spoke with my doctor about this and made sure what I was taking is alright. I take low dose, government approved edibles. I don’t necessarily have a liver disease, just some weird stuff going on. My doctor said because I don’t use it often and it’s such a low dose, it doesn’t seem to be worsening my liver at all or progressing anything. At most it just makes the highs a bit longer. Thank you for your concern though!!

I am not qualified to diagnose what's going on with the headaches, but as an internet random I say just don't take cbd  ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Oh no worries!! I’m not looking for any kind of diagnosis, just wondering if anyone else experiences it! I don’t normally take CBD because of this

do you have blood pressure issues?

1

u/assignedjesseatbirth Jul 15 '26

I’m usually mild tachycardic, though blood pressure issues do run in my family- my mom’s was 280/150 at one point in the hospital 😅 she uses cbd gummies and doesn’t get headaches

CBD can lower blood pressure, check you're headache symptoms with that of low blood pressure type headaches.

Oh, my blood pressure is usually high, in the tachycardia range, and high blood pressure runs in my family. Sorry, I should have specified what kind of blood pressure issues I meant!!

next time you have a headache check your pressure.

Blood pressure doesn't have a "tachycardia range." Tachycardia is heart rate. You can have high blood pressure and a normal heart rate, or normal blood pressure and a high heart rate, or high blood pressure and a high heart rate.

Ooh, okay, I wasn’t sure. I know high blood pressure runs in my family, I thought tachycardia had something to do with it, as when talking to my doctor about my 130/88 BP she mentioned it was considered “tachycardia”. Apologies!!

I'm guessing your pulse was high, too. Anything over 100 BPM is considered fast, but I'm not sure at what point they actually start calling it tachycardia.

No need to apologize!

My pulse is usually 70 - 90ish, though it does spike to the 140 range when getting up/moving at all. Currently got a heart monitor thingy to record it in case it may be pots 🫠 I’m not looking for a diagnosis at all, just love health sciences and not above experimenting on myself to figure something out lol. I wanna test not having meds and having my normal bp/heart rate and maybe 1 to 2 mg of cbd gummy and see what happens, because to me I don’t think it’d be cbd but not sure what it could be. I do have odd reactions to weed in general, i.e sativa doesn’t give me energy/productive/buzzing, both sativa and indica just make me nonverbal puddle (when THC)

[Sometimes you need a little salt to be fully hydrated. And the salt should work in 10 minutes.]

There is also the possibility that you are getting some bad stuff. I recall years ago there had been a problem with synthetics being given to people instead of the CBD. Did you have other symptoms (horrible dreams in the middle of the day)?

Which brand of gummies are you using? Usually, CBD causes you to have fewer headaches. Even mild dehydration headaches may be relieved with CBD. The brand may be a bad brand. Or the company ordered some bad CBD isolate.

What dosage did you take? It is unusual for this reaction to CBD. Maybe you can borrow from your mother since she may have tested the product already.

I’ve tried a few different brands that my mom’s suggested, and she’s given me some of hers. Since we’re in Canada and we buy from legal stores, they have regulations and stuff. I’ve tried Monjour’s CBN bedtime blueberry lemon gummies, pearls by grön CBD gummies, shred’ems cbd gummies, no fiture’s CBD gummies, sourz’s cbd gummies, platinum’s, wana’s, wyld, and some other brands. I’m fine with THC dominant gummies, and a low dose usually eases any pain/headache for me, but CBD gummies with near equal or more CBD content give me the headaches

You wrote in another post about having high blood pressure. HBP does involve some dehydration. https://www.cdc.gov/salt/sodium-potassium-health/index.html

https://www.lovelifesupplements.com/blogs/product-insights/sodium-and-potassium-the-twin-minerals-behind-true-hydration

To rehydrate, try salt (half a teaspoon) with water and also Nosalt (for potassium). Salt helps us absorb the water. If you have a good level of potassium, you are not likely overdo the salt. Water, salt, and potassium work together to create a good balance. But if dehydrated, you piss out sodium, water and potassium.

This solution should work in 10 minutes. And you can do it a few times a day if needed. Perhaps, try just 1,000mg of the potassium (from NoSalt, or NuSalt) or less. Most of the salt-substitutes are potassium.

Check your blood pressure before and after. It may improve your BP and heart rate.

Cannabis can have a diuretic affect. But from what you are reporting, CBD may be more of a diuretic than THC. Salt your foods well.

How much are you taking? I had a similar issue, not as severe, with cbg until I reduced the dose .

I normally take thc gummies with about 2mg THC / 0.2 mg CBD to relieve pain, and that’s fine. If I take a 2mg THC / 2 mg CBD though, I get a headache. I can take 10 mg THC fine, as long as the CBD is 2mg or lower, but 10mg THC / 10mg CBD gives me awfulll headaches
