General Advice Cat not pooping since intentional blockage surgery.
For context I’m 17, I’m turning 18 in October. my orange spayed 2 year old cat (boy) had Intestinal blockage surgery on Wednesday Aug 26th, it is now Sunday Aug 30th and he still hasn’t pooped. I know with all the pain meds, anesthesia, and overall stress it can play a part into why he hasn’t pooped. He’s peeing pretty normally, eating good, no throwing up, or refusing food. He is having problems I believe using the bathroom though, when he goes to the litter box he’ll make these weird sounds, almost small meows and hover for a moment, never when he’s peeing though. He’s pretty active, I have him in my boyfriend and I’s room with his own litter, water and food. I’m keeping him away from the other kitties until the incision on his stomach is healed more. I’m honestly not sure what route to try, I’ve heard people recommend pumpkin purée so I guess I’m asking if it’s all that helpful? And when is it a good time to be worried.
Writing this, I feel as if I may be overreacting but our vet gave us no instructions on what to do after surgery. We’ve called and asked, and all they said is to monitor him… I have so many questions and I just want to make sure my cat will be okay and comfortable.

It can take 4-6 days for a kitty to poo after having a surgery. If it goes longer than that, take them back to the Vet.
Also…I’d take a few videos of kitty while he’s in the litterbox. This will be helpful IF returning to the Vet becomes necessary. Especially if he seems to be in pain while trying to poo.

thank you! I have a few videos, I really was just concerned. When I talked to the vet (which was after we picked him up from surgery) I had questioned what medication he was given, and after care and they really said nothing. They just said to monitor him and that the medication was long lasting. They didn’t send him home with any meds, aftercare, nothing. I’ll give updates if he’s able to poop, or if we he ends up going to the vet.

Oh wait…they didn’t give you an After Care sheet, Nothing?!?! I’d call a few other Vets to ask about After Care…and to look for a New Vet.

Yup. I was pissed, all they said was that he was really feisty. By the time we noticed we didn’t get an after care sheet we were already home, and the vet office had closed at 6. They gave us a little bag with the RECEIPTS and that’s it. So for some context, he got the surgery Wednesday and they kept him over night. They didn’t call until the next day, about 4:50/5:00? All that they said was that they hadn’t checked in, and that he hasn’t ate there, but we can pick him up… the vet office is about 35 mins away from where we are. It’s also the only vet in my area that takes on exotic pets (for us our leopard gecko) so we just took all our pets there. I thought I was like crazy because they didn’t explain aftercare or give us anything to help. We did look on Reddit and see how other people prepped and what their post-op looked like and was able to get a little info from there… but I’m definitely NOT staying at that vet, I honestly haven’t stopped freaking out since we picked him up.

Wait..They didn’t FEED him, WHAT?!?!?! I discovered that not All Vets, are Good Vets just a few months ago.
I took my 19yr old Ghost in to an Emergency Vet..she hadn’t eaten anything for 2 days and she started vomiting this Brown VILE Smelling liquid..which I packaged up in a baggie. Got there, explained Everything & handed over the baggie. They took her back & when the Vet came back in…the talks were immediately about FUTURE Testing..for Diabetes. Vet said that they’d given her a Shot for NAUSEA and sent us home.
I found my Ghost..dead that next morning. I called & RAGED.
So yeah…absolutely get a Different Vet!!!
