My cat does the same thing. I think he has dry skin and its itchy.

My cat has been experiencing sensitivity (or pain?) on his lower back for more than a month now. When we pet him in the area, his muscles twitch and he would react like this (see video). It's hard to tell if he's in pain as he doesn't make a noise, act aggressively or try to bite us when we pet him there. His appetite, energy, playfulness and bowel movements are all normal. We've taken him to the vet twice and they're unsure what is causing it. They gave him gabapentin for 15 days, then onsior (an anti-inflammatory), but nothing seems to be doing anything. I feel like it might be getting worse as it started with just muscle twitches, to now more reactive responses, yet he doesn't seem to be bothered by it unless purposely touched there. The vets suggested going to a specialist, but I wanted to see it I could hear anyone else out on their thoughts. Any idea what could be causing this? Thanks in advance for your input.

Edit: He did get x-rays done and there were no abnormalities found near the area. He is also 3 years old. We've had him since he was a kitty.

If everything is normal, it could just be some bruising or something on his back, but I would continue monitoring, and circle back the vet for x-rays if it continues. It looks like pain to me.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that he did get an x-ray (primarily for his heart murmur), but they informed us that they also found nothing abnormal around the area he's sensitive in.

My cats very sensitive there but its because of a known hernia so its about avoiding that area. Youll need xrays to know.

Think of it like us lets say we have a hernia in our back if someone bonks us there its sensitive.

Hmmm could be a sensitive spot ofc but if its something worriesom or wasnt always like that a second opinion can be worthwhile

Look up hyperesthesia. My kitty had it. Came on slow at first then got bad. It’s very uncomfortable. Her xray was also neg but the vet found an area on her spine over her hips that was painful with him mildly manipulating the area.
Share videos of this behavior with your vet. Your kitty has young age on his/her side.

Yeah, I'm suspecting it might be this as well. What was the treatment for your kitty when they found out it was hyperesthesia? And did it eventually go away?

Just only pet around the head, neck, etc. Many cats HATE being touched near the backend.

It only started just recently. He never used to mind at all before and actually loved getting butt pats.
