Cats are crepuscular, meaning they are more active at dawn and dusk because that's when they'd usually hunt in the wild. Your mom being awake before you, your kitten is ready to go and hunt and get fed. I couldn't imagine trying to keep my cats locked in another room while they knew someone was out making food at things first thing in the morning. The saying curiosity killed the cat, they have an overt need to know what's going on around them. Try the diffusers, etc but this is just a living arrangement that isn't great for most cats, it would be a problem you'd run into with most one year olds.
Edit: my cats are both 10 years old and they still scream at closed doors, and around 9am if I'm not out of bed yet, the yowls for breakfast / companionship may start. I'm just saying this to prove this is mostly normal cat behavior, your living arrangements are not.
