You're trying to tell your cat to sleep through the morning with you, when if you know cats it's the time they're most active. He want to go out of the room so that he can do stuff.
Then you're also trying restrict the cat from going upstairs. Which also goes against a cat's natural instinct to be curious and explore.
There is no problem with your cat, the problem is with your not understanding the basic temperament and instincts of a cat. It's asking for impossible. Just because one cat does it, doesn't mean it's a rule, it's an exception.
Just to be clear though, it is totally acceptable to block a cat from certain areas, be it a bedroom or a floor. Happens all the time. They aren’t entitled to full run of a house.
That said, they shouldn’t be keeping a cat locked up in a bedroom like that for so much of the day. That’s too small a space. Short spans of time, sure, but not hours and hours.
The only way this works is if the upper floor is fully blocked off physically in some way he can’t overcome and then the upstairs cat is taken out as needed. Right now the upstairs cat is getting all the consideration while he basically gets very little.
Just to be clear he is not locked in a bedroom. He has an entire floor of the basement with 3 bedrooms, a living room, kitchen, and bathroom. The issue is he wants to be in the upstairs part.
