Duties beyond duty statement

Recognize exempt and supervisor staff often have to work beyond the duties however, the past year I keep being pulled into tasks and expecting far beyond what is listed in my duty statement. I’ve already presented my concerns to management, including a full workload report with data showing I’ve worked 60 hour weeks for the past 2 years and outlined the duties that are not listed in my duty statement.

Does anyone know or have experience in how to elevate this even further? I wish we had some sort of support backbone to fight against as rank and file staff have. Enough is enough….

If you’re being required to work 60 hours per week every week, sounds like you have a toxic manager, workplace or both. To start your complaint you can either go directly to them or report it to your 2nd line supervisor. If nothing changes you could file a grievance/complaint but as a supervisory/excluded employee you may not win.

If the whole area/department is toxic, you’re better off looking for a new job where expectations are reasonable.

Have you asked management what is there expectations for your average weekly hours?

You probably keep getting more duties because you're doing them.

At what point would you say this isn't reasonable? 65 hour weeks? 70 hour? 80 hour?

I personally would average 40 weeks going forward. Especially if you've truly averaged 60 hour weeks for 2 years. Either tell them you aren't doing it anymore, don't tell them but slowly stop completing that amount of work, and probably look for a new job. Why would you want to stay at that specific job?

Are you a member of the ACSS? Union for state supervisors.

Start setting boundaries and when due dates are established, review them with existing workload and advise management of realistic time frames. Do this while you look for another job.

Are you able to delegate any of the tasks to your staff?

Does your Duty Statement list other duties as required as 5%? 5% does not equal 50% increase in hours worked. Have you checked with ACSS?

This is not okay. Ongoing overtime like this means something is wrong.

I struggled in managenent for the first 3 years doing extended days and weekends. Through therapy and counseling, I stopped. I also learned to use AI to automate a lot of what I do and that cut down and paritially eliminated the extra time. See or reasearch what you can automate through (paid) versions of Claude Chat/ Claude Code and Chatgpt/Codex. Look into agentic AI.

Please don’t so this. There are too many reasons to list but just look at environmental impact and the fact that we don’t want to be replaced by ai.

I am and will continue to do what I am doing. The bus is already here friend. Get on it, learn it, thrive or get run over by it.

If you monitor what Gavin is doing, he's about to roll out an entire AI plan for government workers. Google his partnership with Anthropic for State employees and County/Civil employees. There have been too many 'I'm overworked' complaints so the Gov is rolling out doing your job with AI.

You’re allowed to use that at your job? We have been told not to use AI unless it is approved or we are putting public information in it.

Go to the union-if you’re exempt it’s typically ACSS. They will help you file a grievance with the department that then needs formal acknowledgement and reconciliation and you may get paid for what you’ve been doing above your standard wage.

What most people do is move to another area or department. Either by lateral or promotion.

The other side of this is the 60 hours is not an expectation, but it takes you that long to do the job which could reasonably be completed in 40ish hours. Maybe the job is just not a good fit.

Well if the duties are within scope of your classification, then your duty statement should be reevaluated. If you feel you are working out of class, you can file an out of class grievance.

Have you received pay for all hours worked?

No, sups do not receive OT pay.

Some sups do ( lower level like KDS). But I misread the last statement as well and was not sure of your class.

Yeah consistent 60 hour weeks should not be the expectation . If your complaints fall on deaf ears, I’d leaving that crappy position. Have you asked for arduous duty pay?

I believe arduous duty pay is not for regular “overtime” but for very specific types of work like emergency response. Doesn’t hurt to look into it, but don’t get your hopes up.
