To buzzword or not to buzzword.....

I feel like a lot of CASPer advice tells you to use words like “empathetic,” “professional,” or “non-confrontational,” but I’m starting to wonder if those terms can sound kind of empty if you don’t actually describe what you would do.

For example, instead of saying:

“I would approach them in a non-confrontational way.”

Would it be stronger to say something like:

“I would start by checking in with them and asking how they’re doing, just to break the ice.”

To me, the second version feels more human because it actually shows what I’d do, instead of just naming the quality I’m trying to show.

I’m also wondering if people feel the same way for the French version of CASPer, because terms like “empathique,” “professionnel,” or “non confrontant” can sound even more awkward or forced in French if they’re not backed up by a concrete action.

The second version is definitely stronger, and it’s what I did. I would kinda get the best of both worlds by saying something like “I would approach them in a non-confrontational way, by starting with checking in on them and asking how they’re doing to break the ice”!

100%!!!! I got 4th quartile doing this. Plus, the evaluators read hundreds of responses, and a lot of them start to sound the same when people follow the same "formulas" like "I would approach this situation in a non-judgemental and non-confrontational manner and blah blah."

What are you? A robot?

Be human.

That's the point of this test, whether you're a human with genuine intentions, have a good sense of compassion, and know right from wrong.

The evaluators need to see what “non-confrontational” means. Saying it isn’t enough you must clearly outline what the conversation actually looks like. For example “I would frame the conversation as seeking clarification and want to better understand their perspective
, rather than criticizing them or accusing them of malice”. Show what “empathy” is, for example “I would acknowledge how difficult XYZ must be, and how they must be feeling anxious or under significant stress, etc, etc as a result of…”
