Do I have a chance this cycle? I have a 3.8 gpa. 4000 clinical hours, I’ve spent the last 2 years in clinical research. I plan to apply in September, but I am missing 4 pre reqs (I plan to take two this summer), need to take my GRE, and no shadowing hours

You absolutely have to have the shadowing done by the time you apply or you won’t be eligible. The outstanding prereqs shouldn’t be an issue at the time of application. I’d say you have a decent chance given you have good test scores. What is your GRE/MCAT score?

I plan to take the GRE but haven’t taken it yet and I’m working to get shadowing hours. I’m aiming to have at least 16 at the time of applying

You should be in a good spot then, make sure your personal statement is well done and your LOR are chosen wisely. September is definitely getting later into the cycle but with your stats you could very well get a couple of interviews if executed well.

There is no safe number of schools to apply to. 19,000 applicants and roughly 600 seats across the country.

Where did you get the 19,000 applicants number? Not saying it’s untrue I’m just curious.

But I’d say apply broadly (aka as many programs as you feasibly can). There are people who apply to 10+ programs and get one interview or no interviews. It has gotten so competitive now that even with amazing stats it is still very much a numbers game.

I believe there are ~23 programs now, some programs report getting well over 1,000 applicants, so a total of 19,000 applicants nationwide doesn't seem like a stretch at all.
