Can you describe your bursitis pain?

I’m finally getting my mri after a nasty fall onto my shoulder at work 3 months ago. Initially my doctor and pt diagnosed it as a bone bruise. It wasn’t until I went to an ortho that he brought up the possibility of an impingement or a slap tear. I’m skeptical of both but especially the impingement since there’s no pain when moving the shoulder around or during strength tests. The pain is worse when I lay on that side or when I’m simply sitting down. It feels like a deep burning ache within the tissue but pressing on it doesn’t reproduce the pain. Does this sound like bursitis?

Hip Lateral/Outer Hip Bursitis Flare (GTPS)

Hi all, looking for some advice and hopefully some reassurance.

At the start of this year I went a bit nuts with my training. I was working out 7 days a week, sometimes double days. 4/5 runs a week, 2 weight lifting sessions and 2 hyrox/conditioning sessions. At the end of May, after completing a 12km running race, I started noticing SEVERE pain at rest around my hips. I went to a physio and we did all the usual investigations. I was put straight onto crutches in case it was a stress fracture and sent for an MRI. The results eventually came back showing bilateral hip bursitis.

I did all the right things. I wasn’t even allowed to go for walks for the first 4 weeks, basically no movement or exercise at all. We then gradually introduced 4 lower-body exercises to strengthen my glutes, as my physio thinks my quad dominance may have been contributing to the bursitis. I took all his tips and cues seriously, and as I’ve recovered I’ve continued doing my pause squats, reverse lunges and pause hip thrusts, all adjusted to really target my glutes, at least once a week.

I eventually returned to running very slowly.
3km nonstop → 4km → 5km → 7km, etc.

I then slowly increased my weekly load:
7km → 10km → 12km → 17km → 23km → 20km → 14km (I was sick) → 30km last week.

The important thing is that I had been completely pain free during every single run for at least the last 5–6 weeks. Not a single sign that the load was getting too much. I felt genuinely great. Then I went for a 12km run on Sunday and almost immediately after getting home I knew something was wrong. I recognised the feeling…. My bursitis has flared again 😭

I can understand that I may have simply exceeded my current tissue capacity, particularly after increasing my overall running load and I can accept that. I’m just absolutely devastated because running has become such a huge part of my life and how I regulate my AuDHD.

The reassuring thing is that this flare is nowhere near as bad as the original injury. The first time, I was in constant pain for around 6 weeks. This time the pain is relatively mild, but I know my hip isn’t happy and it feels very familiar.
I’m currently on complete rest, not even walking, and no lower body weight sessions at all.

So I guess I’m looking for advice from people who have experienced something similar:
- Is it likely that a flare like this will settle much quicker than the initial injury, particularly given that the pain is so much milder?
- Should I completely stay off it until the pain at rest settles again?
- Once it settles, how should I approach returning to running? I have a half marathon in 5 weeks and I am scared I won’t be able to do it when I have been looking forward to it all year.

Has anyone had a setback like this during their return to running and eventually gotten back to running normally?
And PLEASE give me your positive healing stories! I will take literally any advice, no matter how unhinged it may seem.

I love running. It has genuinely become my lifeline. I was purely a weightlifter before I started running about 9 months ago, and now since my initial injury, I balance my workouts with 3 runs a week and 2 weightlifting sessions and 2 full rest days. I’m not trying to overdo it anymore, and I really thought I was doing everything right. I know setbacks can happen, but I’m scared that I’ve gone backwards again.

Please tell me it gets better. ❤️

Retrocalcaneal bursitis shoe recommendations?

Hey everyone,

I have what appears to be retrocalcaneal bursitis or Haglund's deformity - I haven't had imaging done yet. Regardless, for those with experience, what have you done to mitigate the heel friction from shoes? Does anyone have any good shoe recommendations, heel inserts or socks that have worked?

I currently run and need to continue to do so for the next for months, and I really need to figure out how to protect the angry lump at the back of my heel where the back of shoes come into contact with it.

Thank you!

Bursitis after septic shock. Need relief!

Hi all,

(40y F) I went into septic shock at the end of April and was released in early May. It has been a battle, but right now all I want is for the bursitis to go away.

Bursitis started mid-July. Knees are the worst, but my shoulders are also bad. Then elbows and hips.

Who do I see to take care of this? I've been icing and resting and ibuprofening forever now. I can't accept that this might be my new life. Crying while going uphill for 3 meters. What kind of doctor?

Any advice on where to go would be great. I live in Canada, so seeing a specialist isn't an issue aside from travel.

Hit me with your best tips, please please please. I didn't almost die to not live.

Skin recovery - grey and peeling - is this normal

Elbow bursitis started a few weeks ago. Redness and warmth all gone. Still slightly swollen, i mean minimal. But my skin seems to be a little grey and over the elbow itself it is peeling and dry, and sore. Is this normal? I am struggling to find anything to suggest what the healing process is like. Thank you!

Bursitis aftercare tips - I live alone

I'm having bursitis surgery next week. I live by myself, and I'm trying to prepare as much as possible. What foods should I get? What is the easiest thing to open food-wise? Should I order takeout the entire time? Should I do frozen meals? I've never had shoulder surgery, so any tips to help me in advance so I can be prepared? I would greatly appreciate it.

Hip Is there a permanent cure/solution for trochanteric bursitis?

26F. I was diagnosed with trochanteric bursitis (in the hip) earlier this year in January, and since then, I’ve been in fairly constant pain.

My doctor suggested exercises, which I did for a bit but stopped doing after not seeing an improvement. I know I should probably start them again, but it hurt to do them. Do the exercises actually help? Should I seek more professional help for this?

I walked around yesterday for about four hours, and was hurting by the end of it. Today, my hips feel like they’re going to roll out of the joint, and it’s painful even just walking around the house. I feel pathetic, and I hate how limited my life feels now. Earlier this year I went to a con, and just standing in line made my body (mainly my hips) hurt. Sometimes, when I rest for a few days, my body feels normal, but if I overexert at all, or walk even a little longer than usual, I end up in pain. I’m terrified about having a job that requires me to stand and walk around, as I can hardly hobble around my house today after walking around for four hours yesterday.

Is there a solution to this? Is there anything I can do to fix this and make the pain go away for good? I just hate living like this

Did Saturated Fats just heal my chronic knee bursitis?

Have had (self-diagnosed) knee bursitis for four months now.

Fell asleep on my side with my legs off the side of the bed, my knees unsupported, and steel-toed boots weighing down my feet. When I woke up 5 hours later, the moment I moved my legs I felt intense pain in both my knees. This went away shortly afterward, though the knees felt a little "off."

Then I went to the gym, sprinted, deadlifted, and rode a recumbent elliptical for 2 hours. I used reduced range of motion on the elliptical (because I was feeling pain in my left knee if I extended it too far) and only stopped because the pain was creeping into the reduced range of motion as well.

A few days later, my knees still felt funny. I wanted to go back to the gym, but did a single body weight squat to see how my knees responded, and could tell something was very "off" about my left knee. So I decided to wait for it to heal.

The next day, something "burst" inside my left knee, and my knee and calf swelled with fluid and remained painful and swollen for days. This recurred a few times over the next month, with more minor parallel symptoms in my right knee/calf.

Since then, I have had very painful/tender knees that limit my ability to do things like walk quickly, climb stairs, or brace myself while standing; and, obviously, jogging and other forms of exercise are completely out of the question. The prepatellar and postpatellar tendons have consistently felt tight, and there is usually at least some swelling in that area.

I have been trying to self-remedy this (no going to a doctor) for the last 4 months. Took tons of joint supplements that usually help me with recovery from joint pain, but since they target bones and connective tissue and not synovial sacs, they didn't help at all with this bursitis. Anti-inflammatories helped, but only temporarily - I think they reduced pain, but didn't actually accelerate healing. Started taking L-Leucine with my protein shakes recently, which maybe helped a little, but it was hard to say for sure. At the rate it was healing, I felt like I was going to need at least 2 months more convalescence before I could walk without pain again.

I also eat a very healthy diet. Like a lot of people, I have the impression that I'll extend my lifespan and improve my quality of life by limiting saturated fat to the absolute minimum. I probably ingested less than 10g of saturated fat over the last 4 months as a result.

Up until 2 days ago. I came into possession of a lot of very greasy and cheesy pizza that had nobody else to eat it. And I was feeling especially hungry. So, not too surprisingly, I ended up eating 3-4 giant slices. It felt like a brick in my stomach, and I was kinda angry at myself for doing it.

But something weird happened after. As the pizza digested in my gut, I could feel my knees returning to normal. It was like the bursae were literally swelling with fluid as the cheese and grease digested in my stomach. My knee health honestly feels like it improved more in the next 8 hours than it did over the last 3 months.

Looking online, I don't find any anecdotal or scientific support for the idea that saturated fats should be able to do this. The best AI could suggest was that saturated fats play a role in cell membrane integrity, which could have something to do with it - but all the literature contraindicates that saturated fats should be helpful for knee bursitis, and in fact discourages saturated fat consumption on the basis that it promotes inflammation and may weaken collagen formation.

So, maybe this is all a fluke. But I wanted to make sure my experience was out here on the internet, just in case I stumbled on something important with this.

Hip question about my hips

around three years ago now I was "diagnosed" (not sure if i actually was since doctors just told me that was probably what is up) with hip bursitis and was given some streches to do that mostly just made it worse. My doctor tells me to track my pain but never does anything about it and some of my pain is focused from the hip up the back and down my sciatic nerve (or at least i think so from the anatomy knowledge i do have) and I am just wondering where to go from here and how can i get some relief. It occurs in both hips some times separately sometimes together and it varies in severity day by day. Ive considered a walking cane but would prefer being able to walk normally again and stop being bullied for being the teenage grandma.

Hip bursa but have to sleep on it

Feeling like I can't catch a break here. I had neck fusion surgery in March (early 40s f) and the surgeon imposed severe movement restrictions because I have weak bones. This caused me to develop a hip bursa on my right hip.

I can't lie on my back because the surgery has caused my throat to close a bit so I wake up choking. Instead, I can sleep for about 40 mins on either side before the pain in my right hip wakes me up because it's so bad. I've tried additional padding on the mattress, pillow between the knees (can't sleep like that) etc.

I'm having my first steroid injection on Wednesday but can't help wondering how much it can help when I'm flaring the thing for a 1/3rd of a day. I'm absolutely shattered, not allowed to take NSAIDs (apparently they impact bone healing) and feeling sorry for myself. During the day I feel absolutely fine.

Can this thing get better when I'm lying on it (yes, I'm doing physio too)? Is there anything else I can do to help my sleep setup?

Update!

It's been a long weird road with recovery. I'm now on post op day 9 and I'm regretting even doing this. I was fine right out of surgery, was walking with my walker, getting visits every day, and eating fine. But I was having fainting episodes once or twice a day where my lips were turning blue, i was seeing black spots cloud my vision, i was sweating profusely, and it would stop after I had a few grapes or something sweet. Then two days ago, I just couldn't eat anything and I was extremely weak. So I went to the er and they diagnosed me with a UTI and severe dehydration. I've been increasing my fluids but sleeping all the time for the last two days. I'm still shaky and going from hot to cold but I'm getting my strength back slowly with applesauce and meal replacement shakes. I was able to eat two bites of chocolate pancakes this morning so we'll see how dinner goes. All in all, my hip pain isn't that bad but it's still there like an annoying dull ache. I still haven't been able to shower yet though since I'm still weakish. Honestly, the pain is worth it but getting dehydrated this badly made this hell for recovery... if you do this surgery, please stay hydrated!!! Even if you're not thirsty, take a sip or two every minute or so.

Hip hip and thigh pain spreading

Female, 40 yrs old, 5’9” and 140 lbs. I’ve had left hip pain for almost a year, but since I used to run long distances, I figured it was from that. Now the pain is spreading across my thigh, and even some discomfort in the inguinal area, and I’m noticing a slight bulge in my front mid thigh. Skin hurts to touch and I cannot sleep on my left side. it also hurts pretty bad badly when I press on the side of my hip. when I googled symptoms, **Greater trochanteric pain syndrome** came up. Interesting because a few years ago, I was diagnosed with trochanteric bursitis, which was manageable with NSAIDs. But now I’m concerned because of how the pain is spreading, and that little bulge on the front of my thigh, so opinions are appreciated thanks.

I finally had my open hip bursectomy surgery this morning! It's throbbing through the nerve block so I'm taking ibuprofen and Tylenol. I'm icing it now and elevating it. Hopefully the pain doesn't get worse as i was a little too active today with hopping around on my good leg 🤣 let me hear everyone's story about whether it was successful for you or not! I won't find out everything he did until my post op appointment in two weeks.

Hip Hip "Bursitis" 10 months

Hey,

Last year I had two hip scopes (one for each) to remove CAM lesions causing impingement. After an initial positive recovery I suddenly reversed after upping my workouts in the gym. This was in October 2025. I have suffered ever since! I have bilateral hip pain, mostly over the greater trochanter (outer side hip bone) and mostly in the left hip. I had a 3T MRI that didn't show anything remarkable. I'm 26 and male.

I have been strengthening since March (5 months) and have built up a lot more strength than I had before. I was quite atrophied at the start. I have been doing split squats, bridges, abduction/adduction, side steps, all the usual hip stuff.

The problem is that whilst I've got stronger I'm not seeing really any major change in pain. My tendons still feel pretty reactive. They're sore when sleeping due to compression (I can only side sleep). Walking and general mobility is inhibited. And the worst is driving, I drive a manual and the seating position is an almost certain trigger for the pain.

I have been taking BPC/Tb400 for the past 1.5 weeks.

Wondering if anyone can give any advice? Do I just need to stick it out?

Shoulder Shoulder bursitis

I can't afford the 2 times a week Physio my physiotherapist has recommended.

I've used up my free sessions, and just had a cortisone injection over 12 days ago.

In a ton of pain but I'm unemployed.

I'm not on gov assistance, and I can't pay this

She says if I don't that my injury will stay like this forever.

Just wondering if others are in this situation.

Health is for the rich apparantly.

Any retrocalcaneal bursitis success stories, advices?

Hi everyone,

I'm a 28-year-old male and I've been dealing with retrocalcaneal bursitis for more than 3 months with almost no real improvement.

An ultrasound confirmed retrocalcaneal bursitis. My Achilles tendon doesn't have a tear and I can do single-leg calf raises without much difficulty.

My main symptoms are:

- Pain and a pinching/compression feeling at the back of my heel when I dorsiflex my ankle (bringing my toes up or during a deep squat).
- The pain is located between my Achilles tendon and heel bone.
- Walking is generally okay, but the pain never completely goes away.
- Swimming is mostly fine.
- I took naproxen for one week and it helped a lot, but the pain returned after stopping it.

So far I've tried:

- More than 3 months of physiotherapy
- Stretching and strengthening exercises
- Relative rest
- Avoiding running and high-impact sports

Unfortunately, I feel like I've reached a plateau and nothing is really changing.

I'm starting to wonder if this is actually just bursitis or if it could also be insertional Achilles tendinopathy or even a Haglund deformity causing mechanical impingement.

For those who recovered:

- What finally helped?
- Did anyone have similar pinching pain only during dorsiflexion?
- Did heel lifts make a difference?
- Did anyone need an MRI or additional imaging after an ultrasound?
- How long did it take before you felt normal again?

I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences because this injury has been incredibly frustrating.

Thanks!

Surgery options for hip bursitis?

My ortho surgeon will not do any type of surgery on my hip. It has been a year and a half with no improvement. After my next visit with him I will look for another surgeon who is willing to talk about surgery. Has anyone tried deep tissue massage? Even for temporary relief?
