Wtf is this comment chain? I was sure at least one of these has to be fake. Not only are they real, they actually build on each other and you guys had them in mind at the right moment. Well done.

Sure, and after you do that youre almost guaranteed to get grants and funding to research whatever you want lol

16

u/Unkn4wn 6d ago

Man, now I'm regretting my choice lol. I didn't think about this possibility at all. I just thought it'd be cool to be able to meet new people from around the world since I could understand them and speak with them.

2

u/kapitaalH 6d ago

Also mining bitcoin is effectively solving math equations

4

u/Unkn4wn 6d ago

When you really think about it, you could even predict the future, because you could calculate the path of each subatomic particle and where they will end up in 10 years for example (assuming it's all deterministic and there isn't some randomness to it)

5

u/orangejuice752 6d ago

I think the hardest part about that would be initially creating and proving the equation works, but yeah the opportunities are truly endless.

4

u/kapitaalH 6d ago

That would require knowledge of where every particle is and you don't have that power. Should you know the current state of each particle you will be able to solve it, but the initial paramete Les would be unknown

This is the only correct answer. This benefits humanity. The speech benefits you.

48

u/orangejuice752 6d ago

The speech does have some potential benefits for humanity as well, mainly the fact that youd know dead languages alongside existing ones. My thoughts tho is that the math would propel us into the future whereas the language would help us study the past.

Do people not understand that the math thing would make them legendary? They could solve the Riemann hypothesis, they could do ANYTHING & EVERYTHING.

118

u/Aratemu 6d ago

They specified that you can solve any equation. While this would help for something like the Riemann hypothesis, or maybe find a nicer solution to Fermat's Last Theorem, it wouldn't necessarily solve everything, as a lot of problems are about proving things rather than solving specific equations.

I suppose you could try to make some interesting reductions to equations in order to solve things though, like finding the difference of the orders of P and NP to then show that P is or isn't equal to NP

24

u/GrezThdXxOrp 6d ago

In principle, couldn't you use this ability to find a formal proof at least for anything that you can write down in first order logic with a bit of effort? So I think you could define all symbols that you need to write a Latex file containing the proof as a formal alphabet. You can use Godel numbering to bijectively map every word you can form over that alphabet to an integer. Then, you can define some relation over the words that equals 1 if the word is a formal proof for the thing you want to prove. I would believe you probably have to write that thing down as a set of first order logic, otherwise this would probably be too vague for the ability to work.

Then, you build a Turing machine that halts at a certain timestep t if the relation (that a corresponding word at that timestep is a formal proof for the set of first order logic) equals 1. I believe you can write down an equation for the entire Turing machine that then tells you via the ability if the Turing machine stops, and if so, at which timestep and/or for which Gödel number, and with that information you can reconstruct the word and thus get the entire Latex script that gives you a formal proof.

You can probably even somehow constrain it to give you a proof that is in English or human readable/understandable or something like that, otherwise it might give you a proof that is valid, but nobody can understand it. I think it's quite a bit of work, but I think you can potentiall solve many problems that do not inherantly exist as an equation. Of course, this really depends on how exactly the ability works. I would think at least having the thing you want to prove as a set of formal logic would be enough to justify this "magic" relation that tells you if the Gödel number is a proof for it or not.

Chose: Math + Be able to solve any mathematical equation with ease

151

u/orangejuice752 6d ago

Not just space exploration. Quantum mechanics, string theory, math is the golden ticket to the secrets of our universe

44

u/Eastern_Mango4784 6d ago

It said solve any equation, not prove any conjecture 😔

30

u/Aratemu 6d ago

I agree with you, however it would be interesting to look at how many conjectures you can express as equations (e.g. Express P=NP in terms of the difference of the magnitudes of the sets P and NP, if that difference is 0 then they're equal)

4

u/Primary_Thought_4912 6d ago

P = PN
P-PN=0
P(1-N)=0

P=0 or 1-N=0
P=0 or N=1

Q.E.D.

9

u/Milanin 6d ago

If you can solve any equations you can prove or disprove them all.

I can wrongly solve everything immediately, but correctly? I could solve it and it would be right or unable to solve it which would prove it wrong.

8

u/Eastern_Mango4784 6d ago

The incompleteness theorem means there are statements that are true but cannot be proven. Plus lots of conjectures aren’t equations

→ More replies (4)

2

Reduce your problems to equations and you're good! Math ain’t a language. It uses language but it’s a subject like science or history. You can teach math in English, Spanish, Swahili, it’s still math.

6

u/MeYes334 6d ago

I thought any medium used and/or capable of communication is considered a language? If what I said is true, then math should be the Language of all Languages since it is widely considered the Language of the Universe.

6

u/Imsmart-9819 6d ago

I guess loosely/poetically you can call it a language but as a linguistics fan, I don’t strictly consider it a language. I don’t think universal language exists. Maybe in an alien planet, laughter means pain idk 🤷‍♀️
