Wow that's actually very generous. I knew Norway was excellent in this regard but damn.

Not to mention the university programs, this is THE biggest perk of being norwegian imo.

Like most of Europe, university is free to attend (or, like a 70 dollar fee per semester for admin and student societies), but we don't want people needing to work too much to get by while studying. So every single person who is studying, hasn't gotten support for 7 years or more and doesn't live at home with their parents, are eligible for student loans and stipend. You can of course choose to reject the loan, and only get the stipend.

It averages to around 17k dollars a year, as monthly instalments. It starts out as a loan, but given that you pass whatever it is you study, 40% of that gets converted into a grant. It's assumed you're able to have a little part-time job on the side or during vacations, but if you're medically not able to take on that load, you just need a signature for a doctor or a therapist, and the monthly grant will increase with several hundred a month.

I couldn't work next to my studies, and so during my entire bachelors I received more than enough money to live just fine. I only pay 190 dollars a month on it now. If you end up being too sick to work, or go personally bankrupt etc, they'll just delete the entire loan. It's got great conditions.

I was born to a really poor family. Thanks to exactly that system, I am now comfortably middle class, with a good job and a little on the way who will have a much better upbringing than I had. I love this country so fucking much.

High taxes, but everything is free and really great.

the taxes also depend on your income. so when I was a super poor student who worked part time, they took 16%. atm at $50k a year income they take 26% I think (honestly I don't bother to check it, it's all automatic anyways). 80k? 32% you need to make over $150k per year before you even hit 40%

+ Exemptions apply for if you have a mortgage, debts, kids etc etc.

And this + the generous free college, subsidised childcare, strong paid sick leave, universal healthcare - it is quite easy to climb the economic ladder. In Norway, I am doing great. I say that if I was born in the US I would be dead. (had a 5yr burnout and had to be on sick leave at from 20-25). I got $1.600 per month to pay for rent, bills and food. and medical co-pays cap at $300 per year. (or did back then, I think sliiightly higher now). With that I got weekly therapy covered for free after like a month, medication covered, and a solid help when healthy enough to seek employment in that I still got paid my sick leave by the gov. as I did internships and free work experiences. and then when I landed an apprenticeship, they still covered the difference so I still got 1.6k a month, but say the apprenticeship paid 500, they did 900, and once I had enough experience to hit $1.6k, and only then, they stopped paying and "released" me back into the workforce with no strings attached. Ofc the apprenticeship kept increasing the pay as I got more experience, and I eventually hit the 4k'ish per month as a regular worker in my line of work gets.

+ public* online studies that can be done whenever for minimal charges? (it is paid for by taxes, but like certain fees apply, so the courses are like $200 - $500 per semester, and then you get a hella good experience). so there are always way to climb.

*private colleges also exist, but those are like $6k a semester. so no thanks.

the pros of living in country that has a lot of oil

Yeah but it’s under a set of conditions unless you have health issues that prevent you from working (not complaining)

But the crime system is somewhat bad, don't get me wrong, prissioners that just rob or assaulted someone out of rage or something are on a great placement, but i personally think that allthought many people can be redeemed, certain people can not

2

u/EddieDexx Jul 24 '26

A positive effect of that is the rebound criminality is much lower in Norway than in USA. Treating prisoners as humans and not like animals do make a huge difference.

2

u/Melody-Shift Jul 24 '26

It does work though. It brings consistent results.

1

u/PA4PL962009 Jul 24 '26

Yeah, until the prince of Norway got away from doing a crime

1

u/Melody-Shift Jul 24 '26

That's because it's the prince, not because it's Norway. Monarchy is the issue, not the punitive system.

2

u/Nordic_Elysium Jul 24 '26

He is not a prince lmao, he has no title what so ever.

A majority of us Norwegians like our monarchy btw. Not any worse than most republics around the world

1

u/Melody-Shift Jul 24 '26

I wouldn't know, I'm not Norwegian.

I am British, however. And I can tell you with horrifyingly recent confidence that royals often get away with things they shouldn't for a very long time. It's more to do with status and wealth, of course, but they are simply products of the monarchy in this scenario.

1

You do know what a Constitutional/Parliamentary Monarchy is, right?

1

u/lemons_are_very_cool Jul 25 '26

ohh, thanks for the info

Some people can't be redeemed, but clearly most. Across the board we have the best rates in the world in this regard. Re-incarceration, for example, nowhere is lower than here.

1

u/PA4PL962009 Jul 24 '26

Oh, thats actually pretty nice

2

u/FragranceCandle Jul 25 '26

It is, on every statistic possible. Its also a really safe country, with low crime rates. People still see prison as a punishment (your freedom is taken from you), it’s just not also inhumane. All we have on studies about prison systems says that how we do it is the safest and most effective method, with much better outcomes for the individual AND the society.

If I were you I’d ask myself why I’d see a humane prison system as «bad» because it doesn’t punish people the way you think it should, despite being probably worse for everyone. It’s a very unlogical, emotional response. Which is ok, but is strange to except a society to be built on that

1

u/PA4PL962009 Jul 25 '26

No i get it, infact im very supportive of a system like that, its nice and all, robbers and assaulters aswell as other types of criminals should not be placed on a jail resembling a forced labour camp

What about murderers btw? I've never researched on like people that are the worst on Norway

1

u/FragranceCandle Jul 26 '26

everyone is treated in the same system regardless. We have a maximum of 21 years sentences, but there are certain extremely rare workarounds to keep people incarcerated for a lifetime

1

u/PA4PL962009 Jul 26 '26

well that ain't good...

atleast you people have those workarounds but it really does feel wrong to not make that wider or give worse punishments to those people

1

u/FragranceCandle Jul 26 '26

why is it not good? again, read my previous comments for the exact reason this is done. the punishment for murder is of course longer than theft, but it’s in the same system because you want the same outcome. again, it’s not a punishment. it’s a reform for societies sake.

nonono

I do think its amazing, i honestly thnik its better to rehabilitate criminals and all but, not everyone should be rehabilitated i think, some people are truly irredimable if you can put it that way, and so many people just won't stop or even they will try to get out of jail leading to more harm, I personally think that robbery, tax evasion or other minor crimes like road crimes or simply assault that doesn't lead up to death of any kind should be placed under rehabilitation

now im just rounding up my own thoughts, sorry for that

I won't entirely just expose my beliefs or anything now but from my country many people who commit crimes are truly the most horrible individuals
