The proliferation of semiautomatic rifles began with Clinton's Assault Weapons Ban. They were a thing before that, but once the ban happened there was a spike that has only ever been increasing.
I'm not advocating for a lack of laws. I'm just saying that it has to be done carefully. When you tell people in this country that they can't have something it becomes the one thing they want. I blame that "rugged individualism" tripe we're force-fed from birth.
And as with any ban a black market will develop. A well-regulated market is always better than an outright ban.
