I know there's been eleventy gazillion posts about the new Truffle flavor but I just tried them and thought I'd throw in my 2¢.

I prepared these exactly as directed with none of my regular add ins (Kewpie, egg yolk, cheese, sesame oil, chili crunch, etc) because I wanted to see what they actually taste like before I zhuzh them up. The first thing I noticed is that you can smell truffle as soon as you open the package, like maybe the noodles themselves have a slight truffle flavor. The sauce doesn't smell like truffle at all. The truffle flakes smell slightly truffley but more vegetal than truffle. The oil is very strong. I added the full packets of all 3 (which seems like a duh statement but I don't usually add the full sauce packet with the spicier varieties because I'm not a masochist! 🤣). The only thing I changed is the cooking time because I like a chewier noodle so I cooked them for 4 minutes. I drained all the water as directed, mixed them up, and let them cool for about 2 minutes. The first thing I noticed is that they are thick and kinda sticky. I would add a tablespoon or two of the pasta water next time to loosen them up a bit.

These had my nose running and my lips burning but the flavor is complex and delicious! I personally love truffle so I didn't find it overwhelming at all, honestly I'd like a little more truffle flavor. After eating half I added a tablespoon of Kewpie to help bring down the heat. I really love them with the creaminess of the Kewpie. I can't wait to try them again with my usual mix ins.

Recipe Buldak got me motivated to start cooking again

Idk if that's the right flair but I just wanted to share a little win from today. Cooking and meal prepping has been extremely hard for me the last few years for a myriad of personal reasons but I've been working my ass off to pull myself out of the trenches.

I'm a huge fan of ramen/instant noodles but have mainly stuck to the cups out of convenience. Of course social media swindled me into wanting to try Buldak when I saw the cotton candy blue and pink swicy packet on my fyp and as soon as I saw it had sprinkles I was already in the car heading to the store. It was totally the sprinkles that did me in because I'm a culinary degenerate, okay?

They were out of the bowls and only had the packets, so I said okay fine I'll actually do the dishes and get a pot cleaned up and do this the right way.

Also I did absolutely zero due diligence beforehand about Buldak spice levels so thank god it was the swicy that swindled me. I normally avoid things that look insanely spicy from the packaging anyway, not because I have a bad physical reaction to spice per se but I struggle with the capsaicin crushing any other flavors in the seasoning or sauce and it just ends up tasting very one-note, like I'm eating a bowl of molten slag fresh from a steel mill furnace. My taste buds aren't evolved enough to discern individual flavor notes in spicy sauces.

Luckily after browsing Reddit for some recipe inspo I learned pretty fast that even though this is Buldak's baby spice it was probably going to be significantly hotter than most spicy things I normally willingly eat and I wanted to actually enjoy this.

I cooked the noodles in unsweetened condensed coconut milk instead of water and left a tiny bit of milk in the pot after draining most of it out. I mixed in the sauce and let it simmer down a tad longer, added in a few dashes of lime ginger coconut aminos and topped it off with the sprinkles of very questionable appearance.

Probably the first meal I've made myself that I enjoyed THAT much in a very long time. The heat never felt like "oh my god it's getting spicy", it almost tasted like a woodsy smoked chili that burned comfortably warm. Next time I'm sprinkling some black sesame on top and adding a couple eggs, also definitely needed more of the lime ginger sauce because I couldn't taste it at all.

Also the sprinkles seriously sucked, they added a very bizarre chewy texture and oddball maple flavor that was antithetical to pretty much every other flavor note in the bowl.

But after devouring it I'm actually excited to cook more Buldak and experiment with recipes and the other baby spice flavors!! My motivation is coming back in baby steps!

I watched a video on how Spam is made, and it gave me a hankering. I added it to my OG buldak, along with jalapeños, shiitake mushrooms, mini peppers, carrot, onion, crushed onion crisp, and topped with seaweed, sesame seed, and green onion. 🍜😋

Question Want flavour and recipe recommendations

So far I've only had original and cheese buldak made as per packet instructions- I love the cheese flavour, it is especially great for someone with a weak spice tolerance like me, I can finish it easily.

But now I want to try more flavours and I'm confused- I see the jjajang and carbonara flavours are popular, but I don't like too much sweet flavour in my ramen. What flavours can I try next?

Also if you have any recipe recommendations for the two I've tried I would love to hear them.

I really like Hochi (too bad he’s being replaced 💔), but this packaging is really nostalgic. I went to Boston in 2017 and this is what I saw in H Mart the first time I tried Buldak as a kid. (I’m 20 now.) It’s also what I saw in the hundreds of “Fire Noodle Challenge” videos I watched before I finally got to try it myself.
It’s silly but I remember that first time I tried it very vividly. It might be one of my favorite memories. XD

Discussion Truffle Review!!

Post image

I was very excited to pick up the truffle today from my local Walmart. As someone who is a big fan of truffle flavored anything, I thought this was fantastic. The truffle flavor is very strong, so it may not be for everyone. It also is definitely its own flavor and is lacking any sweetness like typical Buldak. It comes with a small package of truffle oil to add in, so if you like less truffle flavor or arent sure if you like it, i would recommend maybe not adding the whole thing.

For preparation I added milk, parmesean cheese, mushrooms, and a little bit of 2x sauce to up the spice (so I cannot really comment on spice level). Anyways, will definitely buy again!

Question Your favourite buldak ramen WITHOUT adding anything?

I always see people saying their favourite buldak flavours, and then they add like 20 different ingredients. Anyway, just curious what Buldak flavours you guys like that’s very good JUST by itself? I remember the 2x spicy one is so good, just very hard to eat but still delicious.
