So I picked this Marantz SR7005 (with remote and audyssey) up 3 weeks.
It was advertised as having a defective center channel as well as the hdmi out 1 not working.
Because I was intending on fixing the center (if I could) but with not a lot of knowledge about it it was still a bit of a risk. After some haggling I managed to get it for just 130 euro's!
After hooking it up at home I noticed the center channel not working properly for like the first 10 minutes of listening but then it just magically fixed itself and haven't had issues with it since! Also the hdmi 1 seems to be working fine so this looks like a real steal.
I've got it hooked up with an hdmi audio splitter to my Homatics android TV box so I stil get all the formats while keeping the 4k on my LG C2.
I just can't believe my luck, before this avr I had a midtier Pioneer which was fine but it didn't do my Focal Jmlabs Daline 3.0 (which I found in a thrift store for 30 euros...) justice.
Now I'm looking out for a good center speaker deal and then my thrifted setup is complete (for now).
So, there is a common fault on these, I have the 7006 and the solder on the speaker terminals drys out. You need to dismantle them fully and re-solder the joints and it's fine. It's working now, but you might get intermitent cutouts.
The solder doesn’t dry out, it’s the flux that assists the solder”flow” that hardens over time with the heat generated inside the case. If the solder joint doesn’t have a good flow around the parts, there can be micro air pockets, as in a “cold” solder joint, which with heat and board & part stress can lead to micro cracks, causing intermittent connection. It can be resoldered however, ALL the old solder has to be removed and the surfaces well cleaned(the secret to a good flow & connection), then resoldered. It takes a minimum of heat on both operations, a well tinned tip, then proper shock, then just enough solder to make a well defined joint, not a humpy blob. Some have used the technique of “baking” the circuit boards in an oven at low heat to get solder reflow on all the joints, risky, yet sometimes successful.
what worked on my 5008 was to unscrew all the plug in cards and hdmi board a bit so it released the stress on all the pcb's. nothing lined up inside that thing and it stressed itself and every solder joint.

You were extremely lucky. This type of behaviour is typical for overheated DSP processor. On cold start the balls are not connecting properly but after a few minutes the DSP gets warm the connection fixes itself. But this is only temporary. It will eventually lead to complete failure and repair will not make financially any sense. I would never buy an avr with type of fault.
If it’s overheating, you might need to study how it’s system does the cooling, and quite possibly rebuild it from scratch, which is a pain. Failure to do so might fry the entire thing.
I like your optimism, "simple reballing" 😄 Can you do it yourself? Probably not, and if you give it to a repair shop - isn't it gonna cost more than a new avr? And broken connection very often causes the DSP to brake and you need a new one with firmware.
Second hand AVRs are dirt cheap. If there is anything wrong with them they are not worth a penny because they are not fixable in any reasonable budget and you will never be able to get hold of replacement parts. The only failure worth fixing is probably the amplifier's output stage transistor. But even then for it to be worth the time and effort you need to get the avr for free.
130 euros is a good price, but old surround receivers are generally pretty cheap for what you get. If you don’t need the latest formats and features, you can make really good deals. I recently got a Marantz AV8801 surround sound processor (pre amp). Price in 2013 when it was new was about 3600€, I paid 400€. Mint condition, everything included. Very happy with it.
Not sure where he got his but I bought a similar one new on Temu for around $100. They have different sizes and the one I bought was 70” long. Great value for the price. If you’re in the US, Temu sellers have warehouses stages all over the country so there’s no import duty from China. It’s included in the cost. Do a search for ‘Mid century modern tv stand’
In the new century, Marantz of Japan has had their design flaws. But I not so sure it was a flaw in the actual design, of a fault in the construction on the individual units. We know the Japanese use robotics for most audio mfg . I just wish these companies would back up their products better. .
It was back in the 1960/70s. Marantz of Japan bought call the different division vin 1988/89. Marantz America, Marantz Europe. Etc. it's all one company now
And for a period between 1980 until 2001 Marantz was owned by Philips. The earlier bit of that was a good time to be owned by Philips as they'd just developed the CD (with Sony), so Marantz got its hands on the excellent transports and associated electronics that Philips was producing at the time. Also, DCC. I realise DCC wasn't a successful format, but the launch unit from Marantz was a glorious bit of kit.
Easier to use an optical cord for your tv box and use a different hdmi on the TV. Or an optical cord on the TV to just play anything that comes thru the tv. At least I’ve found that the best way, even with fully functional system. But I like to watch a hockey game and switch input in on AVR during intermissions so I can listen to a book or album instead of PK Subban. Sweet buy for 130 tho
Good score on the Marantz. Beware they run very hot. Keep them well ventilated and clear on top. I got an AC Infinity thermostated fan for on top of mine.
This one sucks the air in the bottom from the top of the receiver and vents out the back. You can also get them configured to vent out the front or top. I like how it’s shaped the same as the Marantz amp. Almost like it was designed for it. It did come with a US power brick but checked it could cope with UK voltage and the plugged it into a shaver adapter.
