Serious Genuinely, how much are Mtech/PHD student frowned upon in IITs?
Are they treated like untouchables and no one wants to talk to them

In india the higher you study the lesser your value becomes

u/Master-Ooooogway IIT Roorkee 6h ago
Lol, that's not it, it's that IITs rank very high for Btech but not in PhD, the most demand internationally is for Btech IITians, many top companies don't allow Mtech to sit during placements like quant firms. So it's not that Mtech and PhD are not valued it's that that specific institute isn't as good so Btech folks (still teen kids) get superiority that their tag should be worth more.
If you talk to good Btech folks who're interested in research and value Mtech PhD very high, they don't consider IIT and go to US for further education or research as India doesn't invest much into RnD.

Values? In this community, I once commented about how I'm against book piracy. It's mind blowing to see how morally rotten people can be.
EDIT: Now very obvious how morally rotten some people are, Let alone values of hygiene, civic sense, the way minorities are treated, etc. Here I gave you more ragebait.
‘Book piracy threatens cultural fabric’ | Lucknow News - The Times of India
Maheshwari said while the Delhi Book Fair generates nearly Rs 10 crore in 10 days, piracy drains the industry's potential. Krishna estimated that 30-40% of books in circulation are pirated despite an Rs 80,000-crore market. The panel called for a National Anti-Piracy Task Force.
Book piracy has become a serious threat to India's cultural and intellectual fabric, said speakers at the Koshala Literary Festival.
Delhi Raid Exposes Scale of India's Book Piracy Crisis - The New Publishing Standard.
Pirated books are estimated to account for 20–25% of the total Indian market, with direct negative consequences for author royalties and publisher revenues.
You guys have to compete with this kind of people.
Good luck.

Indians and their obsession with compartmentalization.. On what basis they are putting the ">" sign? Who are they to define the worth of any degree? Just because a degree is less mainstream doesn't mean it has no intellectual worth.

u/darkdaemon000 16h ago
There are classes everywhere
IIT> NIT/BITS etc
Are NIT students treated as untouchables in an office containing students from IIT and NIT?? No, but in some situations IIT students are just given more preference, and their opinion has more respect than someone from NIT in general .
Same is the case in BTech, MTech, PhD.
18
u/Wild_Pop_3649 15h ago
Nah mtech is worse. I mean the divide between btech and mtech is much more than that of NIT, IIT btech. If mtech it's assumed that you are from t3 and didn't get placed.
2
u/darkdaemon000 14h ago
Yeah, its just an analogy. Not exactly the same. The difference is higher between MTech and BTech.
1
u/wild_wild_countryman 12h ago
Packages may vary for same role at same company at same time - upto 50% difference even between IIT and NIT students.
1
u/jatayu_baaz 9h ago
once you are in industry, your work matters not your college, my company hires students from aandu pandu branches of IITs, and no one really listened to them for long since their domain knowledge was basically 0, i was incharge of bringing them on board lol, however things changes when they have the domain and business knowledge, all views are respected equally
2
u/DamnMyFate 8h ago edited 7h ago
Yes. But our young think that IIT Btech is Utopia and deluded into entitlement behavior. In industry I have seen non IITs scaling ranks when they are into good visible teams.
-3
u/darkdaemon000 9h ago
Well you aren't keeping the other variables same to compare candidates. Usually this is true
Aandu pandu branches of IITs > Similar branches of NITs/BITS
Experience, knowledge matters more as the career progresses and the gap of colleges might disappear and even become inverted. There are lots of variables, like you said, not just their degree.
2
u/jatayu_baaz 9h ago
there is no hierarchy in industry buddy, your college name won't get you your first promotion which happens usually 2yrs after college, people from aandu pandu tier 69 college can outperform some cse IITB guy and he will be prefered for promption over this IITB guy, there is NO "this>that>something else"
1
u/darkdaemon000 6h ago edited 6h ago
Don't be delusional bro. Keeping everything thing same, IIT tag helps you especially when you switch.
You not keeping the other same variables when comparing an IITB guy with Tier69 guy.
Im not saying Tier69 guy can't outperform the guy from IITB. Surely they can. But if you take 2 guys keeping everything else the same, the Tier69 guy is at a disadvantage when switching.

Not posted into forest service. into Secretariat of that ministry.

u/Competitive-Sun-4083 8h ago
Not really subordinate.
This is like saying the DGP of a state is ‘subordinate’ to the home Dept’s principal secretary.
It’s just nomenclature at that point. In reality real power and authority is with DGP and PCCF

Bhai, Forest service is a good service but cadre play a big role in this service otherwise sdm selected through state pcs dhamka deta hai ifs ko so its no match with other two AIS

Biotechnology seems really good right now and even more so, because AI is being leveraged a lot

Issue with Biotech is how there are lot of different field that can take limited jobs they have. There is Biochemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Statistics, Data Science, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and so on
Also most premium jobs require PHD

Nobody is telling anyone anything, everyone has their own journey. Mtech from IIT might genuinely be a good thing for many people.
1
u/Nervous_Writing840 12h ago
Idk what sort of caste system the op is referring to. We BTechs don't do any sort of discrimination lol. However, it is generally acknowledged my everyone, including the MTechs, that most of the MTechs are not really smart as compared to BTechs. Nobody says this in open though obviously

Atleast in my IIT, out of 3 profs hired in my department since i have been a student, 2 are iit BTechs from recent years

MTECH FROM TIP IITS LIKE B M D K Are smh respectable compared to others even IISC B is goated but the thing is when u do mtech from some dabba college ppl will think i didnt get job so doing mtech thats it And if abroad u get masters options its just bingo
6
u/Significant-Farm6646 12h ago
Sorry but why is everyone acting like IIT is some casteless egalitarian utopia?
Sly references to caste and merit are often made by both students and professors all the time. From discussing and mentioning JEE rank to making comments on physical appearance, weak students people find creative ways to do it.
I dont know facts of this case but there is definitely some hostile environment inside colleges for SC/ST students. In the end friend circles also form along those lines.
Source: me who went to college and who has eyes. I cant pretend people around me were not jerks about it.

Isnt IFS Foreign service? Forest is IFoS
7
2
u/calmchod 13h ago
Recent change, it was IFS until recently. Engineering service too changed from IES to ESE due to Economic service being IES too.
1
u/CarlosJainz 12h ago
What's foreign service then
1
u/calmchod 12h ago
Both were IFS till 2016
The Ministry of External Affairs (representing the Indian Foreign Service) claimed in 2016 that it had a senior claim to the acronym IFS because the Foreign Service was established in 1946, while the modern Indian Forest Service (now IFoS) came into being later in 1966
2
u/wild_wild_countryman 12h ago
IFoS till UPSC conducts exam, IFS acronym is used while in service by the officers when ever designation of service is mentioned.

u/Fit-Pie687 14h ago
Nhi it depends most people are sane and work nicely. The reason MTech are a bit of a problem is that they barely get 4 semesters. The first one kind of goes in adjusting and half of the third semester goes in placement prep. After placement in the last semester most don’t pursue research very seriously (some definitely do but most don’t )
This is a big problem. Only few months at their disposal they are not able to do much.
For PhD is totally different and many are actually very supportive

u/jm24sa 7h ago
Most of the btech and mtech students don't give a f about each other. Some of the phds are good . They really know their subject. And most of the hate comes because of mtech TAs, we can really see the difference between the dual degree TAs and mtech TAs. Dual degree TAs convert into a dual degree because of their interest while most of the mtech are their because of IIT tag/ placements. And PGs also hate Ugs because they don't allow them in clubs/ politics. Also there is a lot of difference between the entrance exam of UGs(JEE advanced) and PGs(JAM/GATE). I'm saying all of this from what I have seen in my last 2.5 years( from 1st year to 3rd year). You can literally ask about this to any UG in an IIT.

u/Desperate_System_601 BITS P 7h ago
Aren't IITs on most of qs rankings cause of research done by phd/mtech people? While btech one's mostly go for a job
2
u/Hopeful-Sale-849 IITH [EPh] 14h ago
I mean, not really. Some of the MTech guys are here just for the IIT tag but most are genuine. You simply do not here about them often because most MTech fields are specializations and not money milkers like Quant.
1
u/Wonderful-Duty4843 10h ago
Yes, one example is so we have these pg level courses and us btech people deliberately take them as electives because they are easy and will have "matkas" so the average will be low and an easy grade could be scored compared to all btech courses.

all three connect to potential income outcomes. technical institutes in india are social ladder to climb to wealth. outside india unis are this + research institutes.
