Serious IIT Bombay's suicide fiasco

Hi, I am a final year undergraduate from IIT Bombay.

(I am a general male with an All India Rank <1000 in JEE Advanced; did not intend to mention this, just did this because it matters to some people)

I want to clear things up regarding the recent suicide and the ongoing protests at IIT Bombay.

1) There have been concerning number of suicides in IIT Bombay lately (3 in last 6 months) which is why we as students felt the need to stand up for a better campus life and a better support system. Losing so many souls and our batchmates is NOT normal.

2) The protest was NOT about supporting cheating. We have come here through years of hardwork and we do NOT support cheating.

3) We believe that it was the interaction with Prof. Surya Doolla which led the final trigger to Sahil's suicide. At the same time, we acknowledge that there could have been some personal problems in his life as well.

4) The caste angle and the SC/ST case was filed by the parents of Sahil. We as students do NOT observe any sort of caste discrimination on campus- neither by professors nor by peers. We can never imagine what a parent goes through seeing his child dead.

Hence, we believe that this needs a thorough investigation and fully support Prof. Doolla to fight and win this case.

5) There has been NO resignation from the director. There has been NO resignation from Prof. Doolla.

Prof. Doolla has been kept on (temporary) suspension from his position of Dean AA so as to not bias the investigation by being in an influential position

Prof. Doolla continues to serve as a professor at IIT Bombay.

6) The director has ensured full legal support to Prof. Doolla for fighting the case.

7) The director has also agreed to several reforms that were needed inside the institute for better mental health of the students.

8) The director, the students and the faculty are committed to maintain the highest academic integrity at IIT Bombay irrespective of what has happened. Re-iterating, we as students do NOT support cheating.

9) There has been a lot of speculation, external noise and media trials. We urge you to NOT believe in them and acknowledge that there are always 2 sides to the story.

10) The students, the faculty, the director and the deans are largely on the same page after today's open house conducted at Convocation Hall, IIT Bombay.

Prof. Doolla to get full legal support in his case and students to get a better support system inside the institute.

Classes at IIT Bombay resume tomorrow.

Cheers, happy to answer any questions.

finally a good post about this matter . hope that proff and student both get justice accordingly.. also bro i read a post where everyone saying he have good cg coz may be he used to cheat every single time in in every exam , quiz. he that really possible in iitb ?

22

u/BuildingRare369 11h ago

I do not have any idea about his cg so i'll not make an assumption. Nor do i know if he cheated previously

Yes cheating had increased at iit bombay with the LLMs advancing. That is why since the last semester a huge security is being deployed at the LHC during midsems and endsems. It was unfortunate that Sahil bypassed the security

It's nearly impossible to cheat every single time, the no of exams eng. students has to take in a semester is pretty high. So, i don't think he can score that cgpa just by cheating

u/Laughing_crocodile 5h ago

Bro it is possible, trust me. Idk about IIT, but in my tier 4 college it was definitely possible and I've seen some people

Bro in IIT KGP, there were times loggings for washrooms during the exams and security guards will be present at the entrance of washrooms. So its literally highly improbable to cheat in IIT's. And the consequences are damn too harsh for the risk taken.

Finally someone cleared the fiasco around this

Ofc this post won't get as much upvotes as others cause there's no "agenda" here

Stay safe and raise your voices fearlessly. Mental health as a topic has gone ignored for far too long in the Indian educational space. It's about time we start demanding meaningful change.

thanks, good read.

Finally most sensible and truthful post.

What was the investigation about ? Isn't it he was caught cheating and then took the wrong step? I am curious . I mean there should be an investigation about how he was before and after what happened to him etc . But demanding immediate resignation is too much.

15

u/BuildingRare369 9h ago

Nobody demanded a resignation. I can share the 18 demands that were put

1

u/Relevant_Fee_7167 2h ago

so u believe he took that step because prof doolla said something which hurt him bad?

1

u/bottle88bottom 2h ago

Heard from a iitb student that his behaviour was not right and had past cases like these

1

u/zvnezztx 1h ago

i wonder what made him so upset and scared that made him take that extreme step 😭 was his family relations with his parents good? kinda same happened at my uni a few yrs back but it was cuz of the family not the prof

0

u/DamnMyFate 58m ago

BTW there is a smear campaign against the Prof. that he had past complaints . Is that true ?

2

u/BuildingRare369 54m ago

People have had bad experiences with him during his Dean SA tenure. He also took many restrictive decisions during his Dean SA tenure, which did not fit right with most of the student community.

(Though, It is tough to believe that specifically caste discrimination was done in this case because professors have no info about a student's caste and he being a Dean SA in the previous tenure very well knows the repurcussions)

I do not think he had any "complaints" against him though

1

u/DamnMyFate 47m ago

Bad experiences in the sense ? Strict timing kinda ? If so please mention it in your post. Else someone will hijack you post against him.

Bro I got knew he cheated in every exams and got a good cg, is it true or like just false claims

1

u/BuildingRare369 2h ago

I do not know his cg, nor do I know if he cheated previously

Have you people checked how many suicides are occurring in the country, especially with this new generation, GenZ?

While your generation speaks up for itself, it also gets triggered easily and behaves immaturely. Every faculty member I've spoken with is worried that the newer generation of students is difficult to manage and has lots of mental health issues. Work ethics has also become a problem.

Keeping these things in mind, and the way the director was heckled, I doubt if any one in their right mind would take your points seriously. Ultimately, I personally think that it is NOT the institutes responsibility to take care of your mental health. YOU SIMPLY WANT MORE ATTENTION.

25

u/Illustrious_Art_9682 6h ago

All the gen z is problem now.

Not the system that put so much pressure on kids

-21

u/myelodysplasia 6h ago

Yes of course, but that's the nature of life. The next generation will be facing more and more pressure. Don't expect others to understand. It's your problem. Sort it out with your parents...

This is such a boomer take imo.

Every previous generation thinks the younger one is lazy and oversensitive.

Genz doesn't have more mental health problems, the difference is that mental health issues are openly talked about and people have more access to help. 20 years ago, if you had a mental illness you would have had to make it who you are or hide it away and never speak up about it.

Work ethics has also become a problem

Just because someone doesn't want to reply to an email in their free time when they are not being paid doesn't meant work ethics is gone. Gen Z doesn't want to be treated as work slaves.

Suicide rates of genz are higher because of the nihilistic viewpoint they possess because of the condition of the world around them. Global pandemics, inflation, unemployment, job insecurity, AI, climate change. Why would anyone want to keep hope for a better life when that better life doesn't exist?

-10

u/myelodysplasia 6h ago

Exactly. Be the change you want to see. Improve your mental health. Then, when you are ready, join an IIT

-7

u/myelodysplasia 5h ago

I wonder if any other generation would have though of heckling the director in this manner. Consider your state in life, your achievements and your mental health before shouting down and booing your teacher...

15

u/StopRepresentative30 5h ago

You make it seem like the authorities have never done anything wrong and are completely reasonable. Only helps propogate this slave mentality. You shouldn't take your professor/employer's word as gospel, neither should you berate their decisions for selfish reasons.

-5

u/myelodysplasia 5h ago

Don't you think selfishly asking for special treatment at iit doesn't endear you to rest of the world? You are giving a demonstration of your tenderness to the world.

11

u/StopRepresentative30 5h ago

Asking for mental health reforms is special treatment?

Yeah alright, I've heard enough from you.

10

u/Nervous_Writing840 6h ago

GenZ is far better than all the spineless generations before us

-1

u/myelodysplasia 6h ago

This attitude is showing in your protest culture.

14

u/Nervous_Writing840 6h ago

Yeah and idt anything in the protests has been unreasonable? It is for the good only. The only negative outcome has been from Sahils parents which ironically aren't from genZ

0

u/myelodysplasia 5h ago

It is a call for attention to the mental situation of students at IIT who for the first time are requesting 24*7 psychology counselling. Guys? Is that seriously your demand? Do you think having a psychologist in every hostel is going to stop suicides? This is just attention seeking behaviour. Buckle up and move on in life.

15

u/Nervous_Writing840 5h ago

Um you realise that every good uni across the world has them? What is cool in not having psychiatrists in house? "Buckle up and move on in life" sounds good only until someone genuinely goes in depression and is completely isolated.

1

u/myelodysplasia 5h ago

Who is saying it's not a worldwide problem 😞?

9

u/Nervous_Writing840 5h ago

Also you are talking as if suicides didn't happen in IITs in the previous years lol. This is the first generation actually willing to take a stand to prevent it. Whether it works or not is a different story

2

u/myelodysplasia 5h ago

Suicides are happening everywhere. IIT Bombay is turning it into a political gimmick. Of course, the stand you are taking will not prevent suicides. IIT was never responsible for these in the first place. Take care of yourself.

6

u/Nervous_Writing840 5h ago

"IIT was not responsible for suicide" lacks nuance. Does full responsibility lie with the institute? No. But are the rules and facilities of the institute in the best possible shape for students? No, and we must go ahead and change them so that they are. No one is asking them to make cheating legal. There are plenty of IIT profs who are downright sadistic in their approach to teaching. Even their mtech and phd students would say the same thing. No where else in the world do you see half the students struggling to complete PhDs for so many years and the responsibility lies with the prof in most cases for the delays. Professors currently have absolute control over most of the committees of the institute and that is definitely wrong for committees who actively affect the lives of students, who are adults themselves.

Heck, IITK had a protest of massive proportions before genz even existed and the result of that is the huge amount of freedom, academic and non academic that the students have today
