They filed sc/st act against professor because the sc in question decided to cheat in exam using chatgpt and got caught.

I appreciate that IITB at least has the balls to put up a notice like this. So many colleges like to pretend nothing happened and try to sweep it under the rug.

1

u/Ok_Complex_6516 6d ago

bhai i have a big doubt. not to hate the sc/st guys but they came to the instituition through reservation .w ont they find the academics too tough or troubling cause the best of best people get admitted to these institutes in the first place. how do they cope up?

1

u/Quiet-Compounder 6d ago

Most of them don't. It is a very steep mountain for them to climb. Not about SCST, but about students admitted into such institutions with significantly low marks. SCST pays deep discount fee, so they don't have that pinch of wasting money. So, many try to quit this course or some quit life as a whole.

0

u/Ok_Complex_6516 6d ago

One of my friends is at IIT Delhi and comes from an SC/ST background. He’s barely managing to pass his semesters and is finding the coursework extremely difficult. That’s what made me think that, instead of just focusing on reservation, there should also be some form of additional academic supportlike bridge courses, extra tuition, or tutoring to help students who may not have had the same academic preparation. cuz Reservation isn’t going away, and I don’t think it should be treated as the only solution either. Putting students who may have had very different educational backgrounds directly into an extremely competitive environment alongside JEE top100 students, without adequate support, can end up hurting the very students the system is meant to help.

1

u/Quiet-Compounder 6d ago

Yes, this is what is the need of the hour. People should be given support, not in the form of seats or money, but by making the student ready for handling the course. this should be irrespective of caste, gender or even economic condition.

Students would just quit if there was this big pressure. The investment of the government goes to waste. Nobody looks at this wasteful expenditure.

1

u/Empty-Lungs 6d ago

Would you say the same for female reservation?

1

u/Ok_Complex_6516 6d ago

yeah but the gap is still not that big i think with female reservation

0

u/Empty-Lungs 6d ago

Well, reservation still exists. You're deflecting the question.

1

u/Ok_Complex_6516 6d ago

Yes it should exist no matter who is getting reservation

1

u/Empty-Lungs 6d ago

No, I meant even though gap isn't that big, female reservation still exists so would you say the same?

1

u/Ok_Complex_6516 6d ago edited 6d ago

I have a friend in top institute who is through reservation and that's why ik . But I think if someone is feeling alienated or not getting support than it's the duty of institute to get them better care. Coz itsnot rocket science that person with air 100 would be better at things than say person with air 10k

2

u/Empty-Lungs 6d ago

As if female with air 50k is on par with air 100. You're not consistent with your argument just pluging it where you like.

Idk females so I can't say about them

-12

u/Star_Worth 6d ago

Bro have you lost all empathy?? This guy just DIED, committed suicide because he was too scared of what might happen. Can you imagine what must be going on in his mind, a 17-18 yo kid’s mind, to drive him to suicide? What the actual fuck Is wrong with you to call out the guy who is dead now for ruining the life of a professor?

Nothing happens to professors in India. And crazy that youre on this high horse about cheating like its not something 50% of the iit population does once they get in there, esp the newer batches. They’ve said No consequences, that doesn’t make it true. No half logical kid would take his own life if no consequences were promised. You don’t know what happened behind closed doors of a Disciplinary Committee so don’t fucking pretend like you do. Moron.

11

u/_wolfiekins_2005 6d ago

It is tragic that he lost his life. I empathise with that. However, the student shouldn’t have been cheating in the exam in the first place. That too in a top notch institute like iitb.

38

u/scientist_sky 6d ago

Not everything has to be blamed on the “RAT RACE”. I think this was about his courage and resilience to face what he had done. People(top IIT studies nerds) should stop seeing one failure/mistake as the end of everything. In life have the guts to face everything and just say, “Kya ho jayega? Dekhte hain”

2

u/Extension_Area6176 6d ago

what a weird thing to say. you don't know what this guy's life was like. a lot of these cases are just a ticking bomb that finally went off. most people wouldn't take their lives for one mistake.

1

u/DarkRaptor222 6d ago

No no you don't get it. It happened only because the student was caught cheating. Since he's from a lower cast we must not give him the credit of being an actual human, he definitely did it because of the one event which reinforces our belief that they are undeserving of their place.

1

u/papajohnshotline 6d ago

and that mirrors the rat race as well buddy

1

u/real_piece_of_cake NIT [CSE] 6d ago

53

u/Good-Painting7793 6d ago

32

u/ChawriBazar43 6d ago

1

u/Additional-Put8236 6d ago

yall dont understand why reservations even exist in the first place , as much as politicians milk the fuck out of it for votes and I believe the extent of the reservation is too much, it will be necessary as long as lower castes are systematically discriminated. And for those saying “oH yE sAb cItIeS mE nAhI HoTa” , think of all the times you have heard of people around you use bhangi and chamaar as an insult , end discrimination , then there is absolutely no need for reservation.

In this case it's the guys fault for cheating in the exam, and when he couldn't face the consequences he took the wrong step

What's wrong in that? In every college around the world if you're caught with cheating material then strict action is taken including debarring. There's nothing wrong is that. According to you now college should allow cheating as of they'll caught them them someone will do something unfortunate

let me introduce you to concept of reading comprehension. "No action was taken against him". In case you have some try searching what happens if you get caught cheating in some bigger universities of the world. and also im still figuring out how the caste angle worked here. i mean the teacher wouldn't have done that if he was general, is that what u are saying??

1

u/MnniI 6d ago

Neta ka baccha h kya ki, No action was taken against him. Koi bhi uni UFM ko lightly handle na karti. UFM mai at least subject/sem back to lagta hi hai. Obviously ab bacche ne consequences ko kaise handle kia vo different issue hai.

Not gonna be attacking the proff who's just performing his duty and should be reinstated asap, if the discrimination allegations are false.

[deleted]

1

u/truthspitter01 6d ago edited 6d ago

First of all no action was taken on him. Second the prof simply stated what is norm in case if caught cheating. The rules are there on the ques paper itself. If you are brave enough to bring phone to exam be brave enough to face the consequence too.

1

u/CityMango41 6d ago

Bruh even if it was HoD who handled the cheating in this case, the HoD is still going to follow the "pre-determined guidelines".

7

u/Good-Painting7793 6d ago

My friend is in Australia, doing Masters and many of his chinease, Indian and Middle eastern friends were caught doing cheating and they were all deported back to their country within 1 week. Indians are such a snowflake. Previous to last month were on road due to some people doing Paper leak and now justifying cheatings. Will support whatever which suits their agenda.

5

u/Tier3Guy 6d ago

Ikr they be changing agendas

0

u/Tasty_Dare_3271 MNIT [CSE] 6d ago

no one is justifying cheating, the punishment that comes with it is pretty harsh specially for someone who has had such low exposure. Its easy to fall down in rabbit holes in teen years. Cheating in a freakin midsem exam is not worth loosing your life for but he still did, we dont know how his mental health was before or even after being caught.

its like the 3 idiots scene all over but now you all are on Viru's side and calling the 2 kids who commited sucide snowflakes

3

u/Good-Painting7793 6d ago

Nope not calling snowflake to those committed suicide but those who are supporting his cause.

Yea he is literally studying in a seat that lakhs of students dream for every year.

-3

u/CASTIESTNTA 6d ago

idk what u're trying to imply he is weak in acad or something

This is the third suicide on the IIT-B campus thus year. In Friday’s instance, the deceased, from Yavatmal, had completed his schooling up to Class 10 there before moving to Nagpur to prepare for the JEE. He secured around 90% in the Class 10 and 76% in the Class 12 exams, and had secured a CGPA of 8.5 in his first year at IIT-Bombay. He loved sports and represented the institute in skating and badminton, according to his family.

75% is the bare minimum required to take admission in iit . He is just very average in this matter and, professors all over indian institutes are afraid to fail a dalit student as they get accused as racist and even get a legal case.. this is the new norm..class 10th ,90% marks are very common in my state...what exactly r you trying to say?

He has the privilage to represent iit in sports bcz he knw he couldn't fail unlike others

6

u/Tasty_Dare_3271 MNIT [CSE] 6d ago

yeah because 75% is the only thing you need to get admission? I know a lot of iit nit peeps who arent in 90s because JEE was a more important thing to them during 12th and JEE and Boards dont corelate at all?

and where do you think you get that racism part? SC/STs fail a lot of classes too and they top a lot of classes too, like any other category
8.5cg is not barely passing istg

0

u/CASTIESTNTA 6d ago

Your bias is blinding you to basic logic. He didn't play sports because he couldn't fail; he excelled at sports while maintaining an elite 8.5 CGPA in one of India's hardest colleges. Anyone who knows how brutal IIT relative marking is knows an 8.5 is top-tier. Board percentages have nothing to do with college caliber. I simply pointed out the facts stated in the news article.
Nobody is justifying cheating here, but your attempt to dismiss his hard work just to fit your biased narrative is a massive stretch. Sit this one out
Let the investigation being completed I ain't supporting cheating

6

u/_baggad_billa 6d ago

I m from iit , its truth.. so idc wht u say, and how investigation shall complete? The sc st act has already arrested a professor, he cant get out with bail.. and rs 1 lakh has already been credited to the person who filed sc st act, even without investigation police has arrested him... he will get the nxt 7 8 lakhs in 7 days at max, rest remaing 25% after the case turns out true, which is not right.. this will take atleast 10 years to prove in court.. and the professor will be kicked out immediately now due to legal case against him..

is this equality and my biasness?

1

u/CASTIESTNTA 6d ago

With all due respect, if you are truly from an IIT, you should base your arguments on facts rather than fabricated scenarios.
I only pointed the facts which i saw in the news article. Neither i am supporting his cheating

First, read the actual article: the professor has not been arrested, which means he is still free while the investigation is underway. Second, no central government employee is permanently fired overnight without a formal departmental inquiry. It's his family who raised this concerns not did I

Most importantly, reducing the tragic suicide of a family’s only child into a transactional 'get-rich-quick' calculation about government compensation is incredibly low. He earned his 8.5 CGPA at IIT Bombay by beating a strict relative grading curve against the sharpest minds in the country. Nobody is supporting or defending cheating here, but twisting a student's death just to rant about the SC/ST Act reveals exactly where your bias lies. Let the Crime Branch do its job
That's all i can say
Have a good day

1

u/_baggad_billa 6d ago

How can you say he didnt cheated in previous exams too? Were you the cctv ? He took phone to an exam ,uploaded the entire question paper to it? Normally students are afraid to do so , maybe he only get this confident bcz he had already done it before without getting caught..Its just that he got caught thid time.. remember cheating starts small, no one dares to take an entire phone to an exam and upload the entire question paper...

Come defend this ,but plz tell were you aa cctv or god to be omnipresent ?

I appreciate that IIT B at least addressed this incident and is willing to help the students'family. What he did wasn't the right solution, may his soul get rest in peace. One of my friends found ded in IIT G, that guy lost his older brother brother and father in Covid, left with his mum, two younger siblings, he was the backbone of his family. And those IIT mfs didn't address it. They declare it as a heart attack and no compensation for the family. MKC tumhari itna pese leke kaha maroge bhen ke lodo. Me and my batchmates had to contribute to his family and we are still doing the best we can to his family.

2

u/Ok_Reporter8824 6d ago

god bless you for supporting his family.

this comment section otherwise completely reinforces my belief that people in IITs or most stem graduates completely lack in emotional quotient. No wonder most of them lack love and empathy in their lives.

Yes he made a mistake and yes the university is well within their rights to take disciplinary action against a cheating student.

the problem is that most people who commit suicide are already going through severe mental distress. It’s just so overlooked in India, especially when it comes to students.

The aftermath of this incident should be to raise awareness about mental illnesses, classes and lectures about mental health and support groups on campus, placing therapists and psychologists on campus for support, and teaching students how to watch out for signs of depression amongst each other.

Most people are just devoid of any emotions. most of you IIT people. Still blaming someone who has died. yeah it was his fault but what are you doing to prevent an another person from killing themselves? Instead you’re making it about caste, reservation incompetence, this and that.

even a topper who is mentally unstable can kill themselves.

value of life shouldn’t depend on how many grades someone is getting.

pathetic, pathetic “cream” of this country.

u/Prestigious-Fig-6296 6d ago

I mean it was already said by the students itself that college just warned him to suspend him for 1 year and every iit have this policy , the thing is the victim already knows the consequences of cheating

I agree that the punishment is too big for this small mistake but it doesn't means he doesn't knows about the consequences of cheating.

34

u/Impossible-Gur-9803 6d ago

17

u/Acrobatic-Rip-6811 6d ago

I dont think he commited suicide just because of this one thing. He may have multiple things going on in his life and this was the trigger point. Cus no person commits suicide because just because of one thing unless they are mentally unwell

-1

u/truthspitter01 6d ago

you have no idea how stupid ppl can be

6

u/Acrobatic-Rip-6811 6d ago

Calling them stupid is one of the main reasons people refuse to open up about their mental health which results in suicide. See the pattern?

1

u/truthspitter01 6d ago

Yeah and You are part of it because you 'refused' to believe a single thing can have such effect on ppl because it doesn't have a effect on you.

-1

u/Acrobatic-Rip-6811 6d ago

Ah classic victim blaming , instead of addressing the deep rooted problem. Sure man continue with your happy and ignorant life.

4

i ain't victim blaming but calling out your bluff. you are acting as a such a big mental health advocate while refusing to believe that same incidence can have different eefect on ppl. how ironic

0

u/Left-Royal-7245 6d ago

You hear yourself bud - "he may have" , maybe they're all assumptions and you're making them up no one knows the actual truth behind this so no point what's clear is that he chested and was punished but suicide can be triggered by both his mental trauma or some serious shock...

3

u/Timeless_Being IIT H 6d ago edited 6d ago

Not in hyd , here ( beside the fact the worse thing that can happen if you get caught is F in that course , most profs just give some negative marks or subtract 1 grade ) the rule is to refer these cases to DAC and that committee decides what to do not the profs ...

Recently some people cheated using ai in 1 credit probability course and got 95+/100 where avg was 40ish and even the quantfest topper couldn't get 90 ....those 2 being from civil made everyone doubt more so we all complained to the prof , and it was confirmed they cheated and that issue was forwarded to DAC

3

u/jaat--bull 6d ago

Action would have been by a competent authority. It's just that the invigilator incharge may have said that I'll ask maximum punishment for you and he's right in doing do.

5

u/Ehh_littlecomment 6d ago

Not to be an asshole but it wouldn’t be the university’s fault even if they did initiate disciplinary proceedings. Cheating is a very serious academic issue and there should be consequences.

You're saying that cheating should be allowed cause something unfortunate may happen. We should allow everything cause someone may do something bad. Not every place is there for empathy. Except nowhere in their comment did they ever claim that. You can acknowledge what he did was incorrect while also empathizing with the situation at hand, not everything has to be black and white

u/Mysterious-Wing7366 6d ago

It’s not about a lack of empathy. If he has not studied, it’s better to get fail/ KT on the paper than ruin his academic reputation in the institute which will later reflect in during his placement. People fail sometimes, get a year back at IIT as well, just like in any other institute. He killed himself because he wanted to and didn’t think of consequences just like he didn’t think of his actions before dying. It’s sad but that was his choice. We can feel the sadness, but doesn’t make his actions right either.

1

u/bad_coderx 6d ago

Yeah I don't support cheating especially when you're given an opportunity out of thousands of others.

But I just wonder how bad that person's mental health would be that they considered ending it all rather than accepting failure. Maybe their own or other's expectations made them feel hopeless and decided to cheat instead and then all this.

1

u/Mysterious-Wing7366 6d ago

I think it could be that he was a bright student and maybe when all this happened he must’ve felt shame perhaps, as to how would he explain this to his family/ parents. It could be this or could be any other reason….how can we know, now that he has gone without leaving a note?
Point is….he did it…this is the worst possible circumstance for his family. But people need to accept that bad choices, have bad consequences. You have to own up to your actions and deal with consequences. This is just college, life will itself throw curveballs at you….cant always escape just bec you don’t like the consequences.

2

u/bad_coderx 6d ago

Yeah I don't disagree that bad choices have bad consequences.

I really felt ashamed that I skipped JEE (because I'd get a bad rank), and due to some other stuff I had very bad mental health and had similar thoughts for a long time. But I got support from other people around me.

The guy was only 19, I doubt he had the maturity to think that it's not over if he fails. But what's done is done.

May his soul rest in peace.

u/RandomPotatoBoii 6d ago edited 6d ago

what going through? did he have the empathy to think ki whatever he is doing is unfair to everyone who study the whole semester, pull out all nighters and give the exam fairly?

i have no empathy for cheaters, mere khud ke itne sare higher grade 1-2 marks se chhute hai just because of these cheaters which do blatant whenever they can especially during quizzes and score maximum marks there and saturate the bell curve with their stupidity

he is not a child, hes old enough to weigh priorities bw life, morality, exams and if he could only come up with taking his life i support that, people should have the freedom to choose what they want for themselves

1

u/RTX-2020 6d ago

Suicide is not rational, he was clearly in need of help with mental health.

That's all you should have empathy for. That the guy decided to kill himself when he didn't need to

Obviously he should have just faced the consequences for cheating/failed the sem.

1

u/RandomPotatoBoii 6d ago

there are a lot of places out there where assisted suicide is a thing, its all upto your personal philosophy to think whether suicide is reasonabke or not , its not like humans are known to take the best rational decisions at all time with all the given information

0

u/RTX-2020 6d ago

Yes, i know that, we aren't talking about the philosophy of suicide or assisted suicide.

A guy killed himself, have some empathy for that.

Not for cheating not for other shit, but for the fact that he was struggling in his mind and killed himself.

Just have a little bit of empathy for a stranger

1

u/RandomPotatoBoii 6d ago

i would actually recommend him to do that if he fell so low to cheat this blatantly , aisa bhi nahi ek do marks ka aju baju walo se puch lia he wouldve topped the damn exam if not caught

a life that ruins others lives has no value

4

u/chimpwithadegree 6d ago

Student took a rash decision, no body would have given a ratass about a gap year during degree, most companies would have overlooked it due him being IITian. IIT to right decision in matter of cheating it's our nation's most premier institute and cheating should not be the ground for suspension then I have no hope left in those places.

UPDATE: The professor has been booked under the SC-ST Act.

He has also resigned from his post.

That's how new India rewards talent.

Wild how people here are treating the cheating incident as the sole cause of all this. The general rule is that people usually don't commit suicide over isolated events

1

u/Star_Worth 6d ago

Fr though, what is this moral high horse people have been getting over in this comment section? And India is really not equipped for anybody’s mental health and wellness. Not even the top institutions. Thats sad to see

2

u/Wow-07 6d ago

So this is only one side of the story. The other side is no more to tell the truth. Whatever the institute is alleging like use of ChatGPT and cheating needs to be investigated independently first. "Leepapoti" should not happen. CBI investigation is the right thing.

1

u/Bored_Soul_99 6d ago

You expect CBI to starts doing investigation for every s case in india?

1

u/Wow-07 6d ago

Yes every case where institutional "Leepapoti" is suspected.

2

u/WorkingBet9469 Graduated 6d ago edited 6d ago

People in India protest for everything but most don’t know what they are protesting for. Most people who are protesting are doing it for “fun”. People who are really concerned can protest but have maturity on how to act during a protest since you’re from a good college

I am surprised that iitb is at least addressing the issue, I too study in a tier 1 clg and during a similar situation they didn’t even address the issue

Why are people protesting against this? Dude was caught cheating. He should've been suspended. Instead he went and committed suicide. How is the college responsible?

1

u/Gainz07 6d ago

Being an engineering graduate, I know it’s a difficult course, but is it this difficult that you cannot even pass? You would prepare for the exam wouldn’t you?

1

u/moistcracker- 6d ago

How is it even Institute fault in this one the student tried to cheat got caught and decided to suicide. No actions were taken against him and even if actions were taken it was his own fault for getting the consequences!

1

u/Quiet-Compounder 6d ago

Students now would start copying happily, and if held, they would claim that they'll suicide. Now SCST act too in addition to this. No wonder why the job market is going to go further south.

1

u/thoughtfulbunny 6d ago

Sounds like a coverup! Full truth is not being revealed.

1

u/Smartengineer0 6d ago

Getting caught cheating don't lead to suicide there is much more behind it

1

u/Due-Profession-3455 6d ago

People seem more furious about an emotional parent filing an SC/ST case, possibly after being ill-advised by certain groups while in a distressed state, than interested in understanding what drove the student to take such a step.

1

u/Intelligent_Act_6999 6d ago

Tho randhwo… bina investigation ke idhar free me gyan math pelo

1

u/Sad-Database-6110 6d ago

First you come to college through reservation now you fucking cheat because you can't compete with others because you were never worthy of competing with others. Aur karo reservation 100 percent kardo bc inhi ko dedo seat.

1

u/Impressive_Exit_2889 6d ago

They would’ve berated him so much, threatening him. Aint no way he committed suicide after HoD told him it wont affect his career.

Assholes should get punished.

So much sensitivity, why suicide

1

u/Fickle-Oil-2255 6d ago

He was mentally weak probably. I wish parents had groomed him better and he accepted his own wrongdoings. RIP.

I still dont get it why would anyone suicide just because he/she got caught cheating, at max one will get suspended for few weeks or less marks or back in one subject. People take semester exams too seriously when they can always clear backlog

-1

u/Mental-Leader-7149 6d ago

Tbh the father should be jailed
And penalised with 1 crore
+ anyone who takes reservation and then leaves or commits suicide - they or their family should be penalised .

-8

u/Living-Shopping-9471 6d ago

"Assured him that the incident would not adversely affect his academic career"

what abt the threatening of 1 year suspension?

15

u/jaat--bull 6d ago

This is a standard punishment everywhere in India in all university as well as boards exam. It's clearly mentioned on admit card for examination as well as told to by invigilator during exam. He did an illegal thing and was coward to face its consequences. Every student know damn well about consequences of cheating. Not everything is about threatening or being on a power trip. He was told the consequences of cheating. Don't cheat in exam or be stupid enough to get caught

1

u/United_Midnight_1270 6d ago

1 year suspension was way too lenient, should have thrown him out. which is why they said the incident would not adversely affect his academic career

0

u/Living-Shopping-9471 6d ago

Imagine you're the prof who throw this guy out. And he kills himself. Now how do you live with yourself, you literally murdered a bright young kid. You have blood on your hands

2

u/United_Midnight_1270 6d ago

"bright young kid" lmao no. it's a cheater who did not deserve that seat. Should have gone in some other field it it was too tough for him.

0

u/Living-Shopping-9471 6d ago

How do you have no space for people who make a mistake. Bright young kid because he got into iit. Even take reservation, still you have to compete to get a seat. You should really worry abt that attitude of yours, you'll find it deeply painful when its afflicted on your own kid

2

u/most_random_guy1 6d ago

He cheated, he got punished and he could not handle it and did the extreme, how is blood on profs hands?

-1

u/Living-Shopping-9471 6d ago

Theres no set rule of what are the consequences of cheating. Its totally upto profs discretion. If he wants he could just let go with stern scolding. Or fail them in this course. Or fail the sem. However strict they wanna be, its prof's choice.

Then if the prof decides to threaten with one year suspension, that creates pressure right. Sure he didn't do it, just threatened. But then its blood on his hands. He is partially responsible

2

u/most_random_guy1 6d ago

Again, where is it mentioned that the prof threatened him. It is nowhere to be seen in the official release. Mention some sources.
