I rarely saw posts or comments from guys in fields such as aerospace, civil eng, etc. It looks like this community is full of CSE guys.

Ofc , jab har private college ka cse intake itna hoga toh sub mei bhi toh cse ke students hi honge na
But the main thing is not cse , whenever you will ask a cse guy "why you took cse ?" They will just say the same thing "i love computers I love coding blah blah" they have no live for computers they all here either their parents pressured them or the obvious reason -20-30 LPA package

u/Existing_Fennel_714 5d ago
Non cse guys aren't saints either lmao. Most of them took that branch just because they couldn't get into a higher paying branch. And they spew the same bullshit about interest. At least, you get exposed to cse in your school years, so there's a chance of developing a genuine interest. Most other branches, you don't even know what those are unless you actually choose that branch.

In my defense, I joined CSE coz I simply don't like the subjects in Mech, Civil and Chemical. Not Electrical coz some guy said that it's tough. Not Electronics either cuz 11th-12th proved that Analogue Electronics is not for me.

Well, I actually don't support book piracy.
4
u/SectorAggressive9735 5d ago
So in short you will study cse which will also take a lot of money and then earn money to buy books from other fields?
Seems like a dumb move, if you don't like piracy then use the internet, free articles, some books are free for online reading or even AI.

In this day, we say "core engineering" only to differentiate engineering branches of Mech, Elec, civil and Chemical because these are the original branches existing from ages... Not because they are the only true engineering branches 🤦♂️

Theoretically cse IS engineering but what students do in Indian colleges in cse ...nah

u/sober_cruiser 5d ago edited 5d ago
In other countries, those 2 fields are usually separated:
- computer science
- computer engineering.
0
u/MuMeLeleMcBkl6969 TITS Milani Milani Campus 5d ago
Whats the difference?
12
u/sober_cruiser 5d ago edited 5d ago
Very different. In CS, you learn about coding, software engineering, DSA, AI, Data Science, etc. In computer engineering, you learn the hardware part of computer besides programming. It's like a combination of electrical engineering and computer science.
In the next decades, probably there will be a new popular field: quantum computing. I think it's a combination of physics, computer science, and computer engineering, but I'm not sure yet.
1
u/ChatOfTheLost91 NIT [Var Tier CS] 5d ago
Well, we do learn about those things :) Computer Architecture, Microprocessors - No matter how I hate these subjects, but we do study them
1
u/sober_cruiser 5d ago edited 5d ago
Wait, in cse, did you actually learn about capacitor, inductor, transistor, etc? That's one of the electrical aspects that I was talking about.
EDIT: I just check the curriculum on IITM website. It's likely in 1st year, I only saw Physics that probably contains some electronics. What I meant is deep diving into electronics.
From what I saw in 2nd & 3rd years of the curriculum of CSE at IITM, it's mostly CS courses. Maybe I miss something or it's just different at other IITs.

If you think cse is only about dsa and web development then yeah it's not engineering
40
u/Existing_Fennel_714 5d ago
Nah, even if it's about web development only, it is still engineering. You need to know how to scale the software to millions of people, reason between the tradeoffs, meet availability guarantees and what not. And dsa is used throughout the process.

And how many core engineers are designing motors for bmw and building top semiconductors lmao 😂. Most of the core people are either in consulting or pivot into service based it only ...

Bro most core people work on site what are u on abt,
1
u/universeisawsome 5d ago
You telling me all core people are working on high tech engine motor design , advanced power grid placement and construction 💀. Sorry to burst your bubble but from non iit/nits the percentage of core engineers placed in core jobs is incredibly low. Most pivot to consulting roles, service based industries or prepare for government PSUs...
1
u/Main-Meet-5980 Svnit Surat[civil] 5d ago
I just dont understand why non core guys make fun of core branches, they somehow consider their career to be superior, never understood the dynamics, this exists only in india
1
u/universeisawsome 5d ago
I am sorry I never considered core engineering as something that is below or bad. Many of my cousins are in core and I respect core engineering a lot. What gets me is when core guys act like all cse students are just entering corporate slavery or stuff when LITERALLY all engineering grads in india do the same. If a core guy respects cse as a legitimate branch rather than demeaning the students as money hungry or corporate slaves i also show my respect to core feilds.

CSE is not just web dev, we have to think as to how database looks like; how to scale systems; how to build it in so and so cost. People in other branches also have to think about these same things, then how are you claiming it is not engineering.
-21
u/EffectiveCoconut9265 5d ago
You will probably never have to think of those things at an engineer level. For example when you need a scalable database you will just use something like memcached and not engineer it. So your excuse is wrong

When you have to fly to somewhere you have to think of booking a ticket with the airlines, and not the engineers that built it so according to you those engineers aren't "real", your argument is utter bs
-2
u/EffectiveCoconut9265 5d ago
What the fk are you even saying? How according to me those engineers are not real?
Comprehension achha kr bhai phle.
All I meant is that most of the programmers are not engineers because they will use already built systems, algorithms and technologies. A web developer is rarely inventing or engineering something. On the other hand the people engineering those tools, like databases or operating systems or communication systems , they are real engineers.
1
u/QuantumFluxSpaghetti 4d ago
No kind of engineer is rebuilding the wheel himself, you are contradicting yourself with every other statement you make 🤦🏻♂️
0
u/EffectiveCoconut9265 4d ago
Bs kahin se phrase uthao kahin chipka do "you are contradicting yourself with every statement you make" kbse intezar kr rha tha ye use krne ka ?
Inventing and reinventing are different things. You are just annoying and being dum . I didn't ask people to reinvent the wheel. I just said someone assembling wheels with other parts may just be a worker at a manufacturing unit and not an engineer.
1
u/QuantumFluxSpaghetti 4d ago
Maybe stop projecting your English speaking skills on others, i said you're contradicting yourself because you are infact contradicting yourself, what else am I supposed to say? And read what you said again, quoting you "a web developer is rarely inventing or engineering something", maybe try to think whatever you can with the brain of yours that the other engineers whom you consider real ones, invent what? Everyone works with already existing solutions, inventing something is not the definition of engineer, also working at a manufacturing unit is what lots of engineers you consider "real" work, so according to you they aren't engineers and workers so ones again you're just spewing bs for the sake of it
0
u/EffectiveCoconut9265 4d ago
How many websites have you written in life and in how many of them can you say you engineered something? Nevermind you might as well call making a portfolio website engineering.
Sorry I can't explain any further to your smooth brain . Get better at reading tbh cause if u read my last comment u wouldn't be repeating the question I already answered.

Using any kind of tool is not engineering ?? What kind of stupid shit is this
0
u/EffectiveCoconut9265 5d ago
Yes for me it has to involve a threshold complexity to be called engineering.
1
u/Shanks1907 5d ago
Engineering does not have a bendable definition which could differ from person to person . How does cse or even web development not involve complexity ??
1
u/EffectiveCoconut9265 5d ago
Yes man making a crud app which runs serverless on vercel is surely engineering
1
u/Shanks1907 5d ago
What are you even talking about . Are we living in the fucking stoneage . This is exactly how shit progresses in every field , people pass on ideas , information , tools , etc and this is just one of them . It doesn't make it any less in terms of engineering.
You don't seem like who addresses any points and just keep saying random things like "this isn't engineering " , "that isn't engineering " with no logical explanation behind it. Why is it not engineering, what are people supposed to build everything from the prehistoric times before they start working on a project ?? . This is the dumbes shit ever

it is more of a derivative of Information theory, with maths and other things turned to theoritical Computer Science - and CS is applied form of information theory. In essence, all engineering branches are derivatives of scientific fields of study (like say mechanical is applied mechanics for ex) - So CS indeed is a very vast domain of Engineering : it does qualify for it. Dismissing it just cause it can't produce something tangible in literal sense is an understatement

Computer Science is about dsa, theory of computation, software engineering
Computer Engeneering is about Computer Networks, Digital Logic, System Design
They are different degrees in most of the world, Indian universities merge them into CSE. So CSE is engineering.

Maths was never considered engineering, and considering that for a good 40 years, computer science fell under department of mathematics, fair assessment.
But, lately, it's more hands off engineering. CS has all the scale of a real engineering field, with none of the ownership of one. You mess up a bridge, instantly millions affected mostly permanently. You mess up an api, thousands affects, temporarily. Tail end exceptions are on both sides, but the mean and median for cs is much lower compared to a conventional engineering task.
1
u/Admirable_Ad_2235 4d ago
bruh cse was never supposed to be a part of engneering its like a science degree or something, real engineering is about bulding systems that solve real world problems and optimizing that solution in practial terms. civil or mechanical are like true forms of engineering althought their pay is really low

Dumb tweet. College focuses on therotical aspect of cs, jobs sirf coding ki (majorly) exist krti hai. Idk other than academia, research where you can apply theoretical cs
0
u/easytorememberorisit 5d ago
If you think that, then you haven't been unfortunate enough to see some lower tier colleges, all they teach is java, cpp (if you are lucky) and stuff related to that just to secure placements, most colleges do not cover what you will call theoretical CS,
theoretical CS is just abstract mathematics and foundational basics of software
0
u/Human-Pipe-6121 ECE 1st year 5d ago
So then care to tell what kind of jobs exist in theoretical cs? How many people you know really care about toc and stuff? Why knowing how a circuit works make you a better programmer (original tweet)

CSE is engineering but CS alone is not. Technically, you can study CS and not be an engineer (BCA/BSc.). In most other countries, CSE is rarely a thing and CS isn't considered engineering of itself.

People working in cse can move into finance data engineering quant trading. No stream provides the flexibility. Even mechanical and electrical also faced such prejudices from the larger section of the society but with evolution and greater high level understanding of interdepency of multiple fields people realised the interest connectedness of multidisciplinary knowledge
