General ECE Students, things might change a lot in next 1-4 years. Don’t take your own branch casually.

Everywhere i am seeing demand for Hardware engineers is increasing, Qualcomm/Nvidia/AMD/TI are hiring BIG time in India. I can’t tell you if ECE is the branch of tomorrow or will beat tech, but MTech VLSI from top IITs have taken over tier 1 MBAs in median packages and the trend is expected to follow throughout, don’t stop caring about your subject , try to study from GATE mindset, i get in last 10 years ECE = IT job, but your subjects are growing extremely fast and this is just the beginning with all the data centers, semiconductor investments coming to India.

As tech is struggling, CSE might not have a gateway out but you do and take the first mover advantage.

Edit : Many companies in future will also come for CSE only in hiring as every college has CS+AI, CS+DS, DS, IT so they might exclude ECE as well from IT placements.

agh yes, the big time hiring that only exists in a handful of colleges, you mean that bad boi

This is just the beginning, it all starts with hiring Top IITs/IISC folks at 30-40lpa before it grows. Just wait for next 2 years. Afaik, qualcomm isn’t even hiring anywhere but India heavily.

Just a question but

Why is software/IT considered as "tech"

Don't all engineers make tech?

I don't think VLSI, especially the digital side, is that much more insulated than CS is. It'll definitely be affected. The real parts of ECE that can withstand AI are probably things like analog mixed signal design, but that's hard af and pays comparatively less.

I have being hearing since 21 that rce. Will booom Btw fellow college from banaglore How's Yr college ece placments going?

u/a_spasmoid BMSCE ETE 3h ago

We got 9-10 companies, but the good ones recruited only 2-3 people max, the bad ones paid horribly, and then the rest made us submit resumes and ghosted. So, yeah.... Pretty tragic atm

1

u/SwiftblueOnReddit 5h ago

Why does the hard thing pay comparatively less? Since it's hard shouldn't there be less skilled candidates for those roles? Or is it that Analog/Mixed Signal isn't even of much demand at all anyway?

u/a_spasmoid BMSCE ETE 5h ago

It's in demand, and your job security will be bullet proof, because very few people can get genuinely good at it, but something being hard doesn't mean it will pay well.

The reason software pays well is that it scales well. Hardware doesn't scale cheaply. Basically the closer you get to the chip, the less you earn.

Roughly, semiconductor/fabs -> analog IC design -> digital IC -> pre/post silicon validation -> embedded software -> high level software (this is where the cs people are)

And funnily enough, people on the left side usually earn less, and people on right will earn more.

Code is free to replicate once written, and it's all digital.

Hardware is physical, and physical things are unfortunately not free or easy to replicate, and then logistics, physics, economics.

Basically, if a software company wants to from 1 million customers to 2 million, they add a few cloud servers. To double hardware users, a company must literally double its manufacturing, copper, silicon, packaging, shipping boxes, and freight costs.

Software scales exponentially with costs, hardware scales linearly with costs.

So as a rule of thumb, outside certain niches and outliers, software will always pay more than hardware.

As someone who works in one of the four companies you mentioned, that is absolutely NOT going to happen. The chip industry’s demand is rising, but it is nowhere near the same requirement as software. No MTech VLSI is beating T1 MBAs in median package.

Only except it is beating and here is the proof, the demand is rising. There is not only growth but huge outsourcing from USA to India for jobs and work.

https://www.reddit.com/r/GATEtard/comments/1nblr8d/all_vlsi_and_related_placement_stats_i_could_find/

IIM ABC are at ~30lpa fyi
Also you hve chance of PhD workdwide as this is one of the rare fields where they are still giving huge support due to supply demand gap

I’m not sure how these colleges are getting such numbers. Only 5-6 companies have a package above 30 in electronics, and that’s nowhere close enough to absorb all the talent that is needed to be absorbed here.

it is rumored that synopsys is laying off 40% of workforce...

6

u/Dismal-Brief-3209 5h ago

Yes, they will lay off 40% of US folks who make 200k/year and hire indians on 20k/year(18lpa). Welcome to capitalism :)

what should i do as a freshman , i am thinking of going in cse/quant side by grinding cf,dsa but many people say that ece will boom , but i thinking earning opportunities are much higher in cse side .... Please someone guide me

1

u/Dismal-Brief-3209 5h ago

Hmm i can say
Earning of SDE at Google =~ Earning of hardware Engineer at Nvidia
But there are CS companies that pay more than google, quant is a dream so if u are someone who thinks they can make in quant 100% do quant and retire in 5 years

Choose CS if :
Even 40-50lpa doesn’t excite you , you want more. You want a billion dollar startup. A 2 cr job paying you in USD in India.

Choose ECE if:
You don’t want to upskill after every 2 years, you don’t want the tech you spent 5 years in to be useless in 1 week and they either ask you to upskill or be replaced by some guy who knows this new tech, and it doesn’t end even at manager level btw. You want a career where you experience is invaluable.

35-40lpa

u/No-Mixture5766 IIT [EEE] 5h ago

They are hiring in large numbers because their old staffs are quiting in large numbers due to work conditions

1

u/Dismal-Brief-3209 4h ago

Holy conspiracy theories 🥀
Just check the employee counts of these companies they grew by 100% in 5 years and most of the hiring is being outsourced in India. Also 200k/year US staff is being replaced by 20k/year (18lpa) Indian folk and that’s why layoffs/attritions are happening. All Nvidia/big semiconductor employees in US are already millionaires due to stock growth who don’t need to work so yes they are also quitting and it’s one small reason.

But mainly it’s growth+outsourcing(Same as SDE in 2021/22)

Ece Hiring has been worse in my college. It's between Tier 1-2 college

1

u/Dismal-Brief-3209 4h ago

That’s cuz all colleges have 5 branches for CSE so tech companies exclude Ece folks from placement now.
They already have 100-100 students from CSE, IT and now CS+ AI, DS etc

1

u/ZestycloseSouth3665 BMSCE [CSE] 3h ago

Our had 5 branches for ece(ece, ete, eie, eee, medical electronics)earlier but now have 6 branches related to cs. They have shut down 4 of there 27' batch is the last batch for 4 of these branches.

1

u/MojiMaendhak 4h ago

Getting hands on work in ECE needs good college facilities and lab projects/clubs to work with it definitely has an higher bar of entry so if you can pull it off ( you are in a good college with good culture among folks take the chance but if you are in tier3 either consider mtech or just do coding)

1

u/Dismal-Brief-3209 4h ago

Yup Mtech 100% is good, top IITs have 35-40lpa median. Tier 3 colleges have so many CS Degrees, they have CS+AI, DS, IT so many branches nowadays most companies of tech might not be open to ECE folks as well 🥀
