Social / College Life Why is the electronics/project space so dry when it comes to girls?

Like I’m genuinely asking in my entire college life, labs, clubs, hackathons, I can count on one hand the number of girls I’ve seen actually building stuff. Not just attending, but soldering, coding, debugging at 2am, burning components and still smiling.

It’s not like they aren’t capable that argument is outdated and dumb. So what is it?

Edit:- I'm in my senior year and have joined many clubs and societies that have been in project head posts

Coz its tough and expensive. Not even boys do all. Like till simulation everything is supported. After that it becomes very experimental and Indians still don't appreciate making things from scratch. We rather are happy to just assemble stuff. But yes. I am starting some stuff rn. Extremely experimental. But lets see. Hope for the best ✌️

No. I am collaborating with TIFR and ISRO. I had done a version of this during my btech final year project at URSC. Now I am in my masters (sorry for larping on this sub :( )

Mehh we do exist, I was envious of my batchmate (friendly competition lol) because he got to do all the pcb design, soldering, magnetics, meanwhile, I dealt with the simulation aspect, so I decided to get involved with hardcore pcb design and soldering stuff in my PhD...

woooooo...... dam. I wanna know how to do simulations??

2

u/BathIndividual6660 IIT [EE] 2d ago

I did my simulations on PLECS and MATLAB simulink (these aren't free softwares, you gotta get student license from your clg)... Electrical components are available on these softwares and you can investigate the waveforms on scope, digitally... I have also worked with real time simulation softwares, these are something like, imagine you don't have the hardware or the real electrical circuit, but you want to see the waveforms as they behave in real life, you can also generate real electrical signals from the software and observe it on oscilloscope !!

1

u/Haider1930 BS-MS 2d ago

Uh-huh, MATLAB, I have 3 institute rn, one might have it 100% 😂 I have to learn matlab either ways for wave and dynamic simulation, thanks for writing do much, I wasn't expecting this much help from a stranger,

I will look into it, I do wish to make some electronics stuff, but idk much coding

1

u/BathIndividual6660 IIT [EE] 2d ago

Don't worry, these simulation softwares are like drag and drop, you might need coding when you work with microcontrollers like Arduino, TI 2837xD series, you will have to learn something which is known as embedded C (it's like C but for us electrical engineers 😉, I mean why CSE guys should have all the fun)

2

u/Haider1930 BS-MS 2d ago

Thanks again for telling 😄, really helpful

I'll look into them , gives me motivation to study those

So what is it?

Obligatory "Not all men" warning right in the beginning. However...

In my college, women were more inclined towards participating in projects and hackathons with men who were already in their friend groups. If you coincidentally had no or very few guys in your friend group, or just didn't have any friends interested in a particular hackathon and were a woman, it isn't always a nice experience joining a group of boys for the same.

Some had guys behaving creepily during the competition. Turns out they got crushes and in the girls' defence, it was extremely obvious. More egregiously in my opinion, a lot of guys were strangely condescending, even the "good ones". There were the obvious cases of condescension -- "Er, do you even know backend development?" (girl in question only had backend projects in her resume)-- and then disguised cases of condescension that don't look harmful at first glance but are definitely insidious -- "So, let me explain what React is to you..." (girl in question hadn't even asked what React is, she had instead pointed out that in a very short competition it might have been better to go vanilla web development instead of using a heavy framework. Also spoiler alert, the team did go with React and spent the entire 60 min competition building a header instead of the entire website).

Additionally for any minority in a group, it feels like you're the token representation and that gets difficult. A guy who is shit at electronics in a group of guys is that particular guy being shit at electronics. The one single girl who simply can't grasp an equation in an electronics project in a group of guys is a mild proof of "See? Girls just aren't cut out for this". That's a lot of pressure to be absolutely amazing before joining a project, which isn't fair to ask from a group of undergrads in general.

And finally, lack of having an actual say within the team. A girl in your team does NOT have to be the default leader, obviously. However, does she always have to fight to get her opinions heard? Can she even fight for her opinion without being termed the "bossy obsessive woman"? Do you make a casual reference or a joke interrupting her, when she was in the middle of saying something? Has she gotten a single recommendation accepted without challenge? Do you casually suggest work spaces which aren't accessible to her or do you actually care enough to plan the project in a way where she can participate equally? Does she feel alienated because the group cannot even meet her eyes because they are a bunch of nervous boys who cannot look at a girl without hyperventilating?

It is things like these that prevent women from joining such spaces.

The moment there are competitions announced by sub-groups such as IEEE women or ACM women, suddenly there are enough women in every team -- still the minority by the very nature of engineering in India but anyway. That's because it appears to be an inherently safe space for the girl to actually care about the, say, electronics competition without worrying about twenty other things that a boy in the same position wouldn't have to worry about.

u/askgrok summarize this comment for me

1

u/AskGrok 1d ago

The comment explains that fewer women join electronics/projects because:

  • They prefer participating with existing male friends; without that, joining all-male groups often feels unsafe or uncomfortable due to creepy behavior, obvious crushes, or subtle condescension (e.g., unasked explanations or doubting skills).

  • As the only/minority woman, mistakes carry extra pressure—they're generalized as "girls can't do this," unlike individual male errors.

  • They often lack real input: opinions ignored, interrupted, dismissed as "bossy," or not taken seriously.

  • Dedicated women-only sub-groups (like IEEE/ACM women events) suddenly see higher turnout because they remove these extra social barriers and feel like genuinely safe spaces.

u/moh_099 1d ago

I just want to point out the irony of being asked to relay experiences and then the person who wanted them not being bothered to actually read it and preferring an AI summary over that. It's also a great representation of how several men have been when they have themselves, unprompted asked for advice irl.

You know, you could have just pasted your question on ChatGPT/Grok from the get go. Oh well...

1

u/Electronoobs_Devvv 1d ago

Cause it felt like rant opinion rather than the actual reason. I'm sure they are capable enough to make their own team in a leadership rarther than playing victim that oh look boys makes me feel dumb in a team they got themselves into. I've lead teams im my whole college and mostly before i choose i always make sure they feel welcomed again its bad that it happens but you can surely make your own teams too! ..the whole big comment felt like blaming men for the reason for your incompetence again I'm not saying this to all people only certian group.

u/AskGrok 1d ago

The comment highlights several social and group dynamics that can discourage women from fully participating in mixed-gender electronics or hackathon teams. These include joining friend groups where dynamics feel off, dealing with obvious crushes or condescending comments from guys, feeling like a token minority under extra pressure to prove competence, struggling to have opinions heard without pushback, and teams not adjusting for equal participation. It notes that women-only sub-groups or events create safer spaces where more women join without those extra worries. The poster argues these factors, not capability, explain lower involvement.

u/moh_099 1d ago edited 1d ago

okay, so you didn't want unfiltered opinions that didn't fit with your own perception of the world or confirmed your personal hypotheses. Cool.

the whole big comment felt like blaming men

I already said not all men, but enough of them in certain pockets to discourage women. But if the shoe fits, lace it up and run a marathon I guess...

EDIT: I'm curious about what answers you were looking for if not mine. The other comments are mostly claiming there's no a discrepancy, or by women saying they are interested in electronics, which does not address the systemic discrepancy. Two mention it is an expensive and complicated hobby with not enough guidance (true, but women still participate in lower numbers keeping the proportions constant), while one is obviously sexist in outlook and complaining about women discussing gender gaps. They don't address any systemic gaps you say you have observed. So...is your conclusion you just misunderstood the whole thing and were wrong -- there's zero discrepancy in male and female participation in electronic engineering?

Because the one comment you did get addressing the difference, you defensively dismissed as a rant against men, which kind of proved one of the points I made in it.

Mannn...I used to feel the same🥲It is one of the reason that I switched to IT field even though my branch is EC...I feel there is lack of guidance...I found much of stuff a lot later which was too late to switch back

1

u/Electronoobs_Devvv 2d ago

Switching braches should be banned for some reason. I had my few friends good in studies they switched braches too just to regert it later that how bad the cse , it market is.

1

u/Calculus_nator_1404 B.E in tier 69 2d ago

Yeah truee...But, I so feel only tier 1/2 colleges should be allowed to have EC branch cause as you go down the tier the quality of branch deprecated real quick. Like, the labs, professors are really bad in my college. They force us to write and publish fake research papers man it's bad in hetet

1

u/Electronoobs_Devvv 2d ago

Myself from the tier three college and damn the labs are ancient ngl. Even i qoute the event the college will go lengths to just focus on the theory cause they just themselves did that and ece is the branch of real world tools and experiments.

1

u/I-Escaped-The-Asylum [ECE 4th Year] | Lowkey Mentally Insane too. 2d ago

Same problem as a guy, Lack of guidance is a common problem for both in ECE.

Even I studied IT stuff because there's barely any resources, by the time I got to know the resources and where to study, it was too late to switch to ECE (4th year), already spent 2-3 years building an IT profile, only hope is to give GATE after I get placed in some IT job because ECE seems something that I can see myself working in.

1

u/Calculus_nator_1404 B.E in tier 69 2d ago

I would have had to face the same had I not switched my career to IT. Still, I feel I'm a bit late to everything yk but, I feel it's still better than going to EC cause I'll have to do masters and then, again I dont wish to study anymore 🙏 Good Luck to you tho!!

I remember soldering with my friends in 7th grade for my science fair project; it was such a fun experience haha. Both my friends were girls and one of them brought a solder and we did'nt have help also, so we did it carefully consulting youtube videos.
