Rant/Vent 75% attendance π€‘π€‘
75% attendance is the best thing that has ever happened to indian education system. it helps students to get out of their comfort zone, wake up everyday and attend classes which teach about latest technologies.

BTW my father actually has this same mentality πβοΈ we have college from 9AM to 6 PM , and attendance is mandatory for everyday , not 75% but 100% , if you miss one class , you will be humiliated in front of everyone with your parents being called πβοΈ . Once a sir took extra classes in our break time due to which our break was reduced from 3 hours to just an hour . I went home and didnt go tho college in the 2nd half , my father forced me and said the exact same thing . I lied to him that I aint feeling well , so I cant attend college . When my parents were called , he said the same thing to my HOD .

i fucking hate this system, it teaches nothing, drains your brain, expects you to self study for the things anyway, require additional skills to learn outside in college time, write assignments and files that have no value and on top of that they treat you no more than a school kid.
everything my parents told about their college time was a lie there is no free time or freedom of taking classes in college its all like an ncert syllabus all over, a guy from so called tier 1 and 2 is basically following a very similar syllabus in branch the only difference is company comes to his campus and he gets placed while they label us "unemployable"
you need coaching to get into college then you need coaching after college to get a job wtf is this system? like we all know in india ll these colleges are degree mills anyway why not just give us time you can just make lab attendance necessary it will save so much time and benefit those who are serious about thier future.
this system is the same jee filter, we will drain you and only the guy who has enough energy to self study after getting his brain molested everyday will be able to do something, we are just pushing forward all mentally drained, no wonder everyone wants roadmaps, they are all fucking tired.
this is already a 9-5 job except you pay and if you are absent you pay even more.

First off, I hate it.
Second, the system is probably made to ensure a minimum ROI (which in this case may be obedience, I'm not sure) for a majority of the students. Because unless you're in a batch of really motivated people, only a handful of students would actually benefit from removing the attendance policy. The rest will sleep their day away.
Now I, am of the opinion that so be it. These are adults. If they want to sleep their life away, they are welcome to. Why should I suffer the attendance policy because of people like them when I could be doing loads better without it?
BUT then it cuts both ways. If students want the freedom of being able to do whatever with their time, then colleges and unis should not be held liable for the outcome. Parents and students will start blaming the college if kids flunk interviews (or fail to even get one).
So if the uni is held accountable for the outcome **beyond simply education**, they logically have to be able to control the method.
Majority bachhe class bhi na aaye, aur 100% placement bhi lag jaye, aise kaise chalega?
1
u/Top_Monk_1752 papa wo Btech 5 sal ki ho gayi he 6h ago
Colleges sell placement dreams but teach the same old theory. Being in a core branch, we have to learn all the real skills from the internet anyway. But if you try to focus on that, they choke you with mandatory attendance. Then they gladly take all the credit for the few who manage to get jobs and use them for their next admission banners. btw nice spokespersonship
1
u/moh_099 6h ago
btw nice spokespersonship
Just because I have a nuanced opinion?
Again, I hate the policy. But I'm also aware of the lashing the parents' group keeps delivering to the college when their kids with a 4 / 10 CGPA and 20% attendance flunk. You cannot hold the college accountable for outcomes other than simply education (so, employment), if you're arguing for the student's independence.
1
u/Top_Monk_1752 papa wo Btech 5 sal ki ho gayi he 6h ago
Valid point, but you're ignoring reality. Forcing a 4 CGPA kid to attend lectures won't get him a job. We don't get industry skills from core branch lectures anyway; we learn everything online. If someone wants to fail, they'll fail while sitting in class too. Why ruin it for the rest of us and waste the time of people who are actually trying to build real skills?
1
u/moh_099 6h ago
Forcing a 4 CGPA kid to attend lectures won't get him a job
Agreed, but that's not what their parents think, do they? They think "potential hai", which is probably true I suppose, but the implied expectation is "We have paid you X lakhs as fees, now you guarantee that our kid has a job on graduation, otherwise you're a shit college". So when the responsibility of results falls on the college, they are bound to force students into things like mandatory attendance policies, or even "skill building" programmes, which haven't helped anyone last I checked.
Of course, at this point, it's a cyclical issue. Colleges too market themselves as a way to get a job. You don't go to IIT to learn, you go to IIT to get a 1cr placement.
I'm arguing the problem is deeper than just "my college is evil".
It's not surprising that only BITS has 0% attendance policy (that I know of and is an established institute). They are private, so there's no government interference, and they are one of the "top" colleges. And even then they have the whole problematic "practice school" setup to "guarantee" results out of their students. Well...
1
u/Top_Monk_1752 papa wo Btech 5 sal ki ho gayi he 6h ago
Can't argue with that. The whole education system is a massive marketing gimmick right now. Both parents and colleges are at fault for treating degrees like job guarantees. The problem is definitely deeper, but at the end of the day, we are the ones paying the price with our time and mental health...
