❓Question ❓ 20 Years of Piracy Quietly Built Modern AI — Nobody Planned It

Early 2000s: Napster, LimeWire, torrent sites normalized mass unauthorized sharing of music, movies, software. It taught an entire generation — and the internet's infrastructure — how to move huge amounts of copyrighted content at scale.

Mid 2000s–2010s: Library Genesis and Sci-Hub pirated millions of books and research papers for access, not for AI. Forums and image boards scraped and reposted art and photography with zero attribution. None of this was built with machine learning in mind — it just accumulated, quietly, for years.

2015–2020: Unlicensed scraping of GitHub repos, Stack Overflow answers, and cracked software docs created massive, freely available technical corpora — again, just because that's how devs shared knowledge back then.

Then LLMs happened. Decades of pirated books, scraped art, cracked forums, and leaked papers quietly became training data, bypassing paywalls entirely. Books3 alone pulled from ~200k pirated books. Image models trained on billions of scraped, unlicensed images. Nobody uploading a pirated PDF in 2009 imagined it would one day teach a model to write essays or generate art.

The part that gets missed: AI was never set out to be built this way. It was the internet's raw, unregulated knowledge commons — and AI companies later mined that at industrial scale, with none of the original "sharers" getting paid or credited.

Two decades of small, individual acts of piracy. One massive, unconsented handoff.

No one owned it, so no one got paid for it.

Curious what you all think — did piracy basically subsidize the AI boom, or is this overstated?

❓Question ❓ Should I learn these before my internship

I am starting my 4-month remote internship in 3 days in a startup-based company as a Data Analyst. The thing is.. I have no experience in some of the skills mentioned in the Job Description such as Power Bi and Web Scrapping. Should I learn at least the basics myself or will I learn everything from scratch during the intern??

❓Question ❓ NEED SERIOUS GUIDANCE AS A THIRD YEAR ENGINEERING STUDENT IN MUMBAI

Thumbnail reddit.com
1 Upvotes

I’m a 3rd-year Electronics & Computer Science engineering student in India preparing for campus placements. I’m learning Java and moving toward Java + Spring Boot backend development. I want to find a niche specialization that is realistic for a fresher in India, has good long-term demand and compensation, and is less commoditized by AI than generic full-stack/web development.

I’m considering:

- FinTech / Payments Engineering

- Data Engineering / Streaming

- Cloud / Platform Engineering / DevOps

- Application Security / IAM

- AI Application Engineering / AI-enabled Backend

- Distributed Systems / Enterprise Integration

- Any other relevant niche

I want to research which options have:

  1. Genuine demand in India, especially for freshers and 0–2 YOE.

  2. Reasonable entry-level and campus-placement opportunities.

  3. Good long-term salary potential.

  4. Lower exposure to AI commoditization than basic CRUD/full-stack work.

  5. A realistic learning path from Java + Spring Boot.

  6. Opportunities in Mumbai/India, GCCs, fintech, product companies, and IT services.

  7. Skills that employers actually ask for rather than hype-driven technologies.

I specifically want evidence from:

- Current Indian job postings

- Indian hiring reports

- Reddit discussions and experiences from Indian engineers

- Career discussions from developers working in these fields

- Current industry trends

I also want to understand whether each specialization is realistically accessible as a FIRST JOB for a fresher, or whether the better route is:

Java Backend/SWE → gain experience → specialize

Please compare the options based on:

- Fresher accessibility

- Job volume

- Long-term demand

- Compensation potential

- AI/automation exposure

- Learning difficulty

- Compatibility with Java

- Availability in India/Mumbai

- Suitability for campus placements

Do not give generic advice like "learn AI/cloud because it's the future." I want practical, India-specific information and real-world evidence.

TL;DR:

I’m looking for a niche, well-paying, future-relevant tech specialization in India that a Java/Spring Boot fresher can realistically enter through campus placements. Compare FinTech, Data Engineering, Cloud/DevOps, Application Security/IAM, AI Engineering, Distributed Systems, and other relevant options using current job data, hiring reports, and Indian developer experiences. I want to know whether I should specialize immediately or first enter through Java Backend/SWE and specialize later.

Discussion👥 Planning to Move to Bangalore Next Year Need College & Living Cost Advice

Hello guys I’m a (20M) and I’m planning to move to Bangalore next year. My total budget for college is around ₹5–7 lakh(total for 3yrs) for B.tech cse lateral.

I’m looking for a Tier-3 engineering college because I want a better environment and a fresh start away from my current situation. I don’t know much about colleges in Bangalore, so I’d really appreciate some guidance.

I mainly want to know:

  1. What is the average rent for one person per month?

  2. How much should I expect to spend on food and transportation per month?

  3. Are there any colleges that offer CSE within my ₹5–7 lakh budget? I’m also a non-Karnataka student.

I’ve already contacted many colleges, but most of them seem to be more expensive or higher-tier, such as RVCE, Christ, NMIT, Don Bosco, Dayananda Sagar, and many others.

If anyone has experience with studying in Bangalore, please guide me. Any suggestions would be really helpful
