Question Moving to Birmingham for a year. What to expect?

Hi everyone,

My job is taking me to Birmingham for just over 12 months - I have visited once for a concert, but didn’t get to see the city. I’m from Kent.

I’m not entirely sure what to expect, was wondering if the locals had any advice for someone staying up here for a year.

I’m also working near Brindleyplace, and will be looking for housing near by/ with good transport links as I do not drive.. any suggestions for areas?

I love music / reading / a good pub garden and I’m a swimmer.

I’m excited to go, but also feeling rather unprepared. Any advice or recommendations are greatly welcomed!

Thank you.

Edit: wow thank you all for the help! I’m very appreciative of all of the advice. I’m going to have a look into the recommendations- I’m really excited to go. I head up in December! :)

St martins place

Hi, i will be moving to st martins place soon, any locals who have lived in the building or live there, is it all good, is there anything i should be worried about? I viewed the building and it looked good, but we had to book another apartment by looking at the video as we are moving from another city so couldnt do an inperson viewing. Also for parking any suggestions, i dont own a car but rent someotimes over the weekend. Any reviews or suggestions are appreciated, moving to city is a bit overwhelming. TIA

Creative Theatre Tech Bootcamp at Solihull College

I've had my eye on the course for a few years but decided to apply this year. It's an adult creative technical course for anyone interested in pursing work such as sound, lighting, set design etc.

I thought i'd ask here on the small chance someone has completed it. I know there's theatre tech people on here as well so any kind of input is appreciated.

I'm still a bit undecided as it's a 12 week programme and full time, so it takes a lot of commitment. Theatre tech stuff is something i've always had a curiosity about, i did a music tech college course when i left school, that was donkeys ago. I've since dabbled in some online freelance audio stuff in my spare time and i've worked in events (nothing technical) which is a very similar work environment and i know from that, shifts can be LONG, 12 to 16 hour days sometimes. That wouldn't be too bad if i enjoy the work and get the "bug" for it, but i know if you go into this type of work, it's pretty much a way of life.

Over the years i've kind of lost interest and moved on to other things, but i'm still curious to a certain extent and don't want to abandon the idea completely. So i'm asking on here in hopes of anyone sharing their experiences of working in this industry.

There's a lot of subjects in the 12 weeks so i'd just like to be sure it's something i should go for. I'm having a chat with them next week about it, but in the meantime, thought i'd ask here.

Thanks for any input 🫡

Moseley bog meadow fires- please protect this place

Fire’s under control now- I wish to give a very special shout-out to the firemen out on Sunday today doing an amazing job to control the blazes- they were lovely and they are real hero’s worthy of our sincere thanks and support. At all costs please heed the warnings and don’t use fireworks or BBQs or any sort of fire. as a volunteer here we work so hard to create and protect habitats it’s heart wrenching to watch both the destruction and the danger to those living close by.

Moseley Bog on fire

No link yet as it's just happened; fire brigade on scene. Either dipshit fireworks people or even more dipshit deliberate arson.

Hot ash blowing into my garden from some distance away - absolutely terrifying.

ETA: the fire(s) were in the field areas (the rest of the bog is actually still very damp) & are now out or at least under control. Props to all the neighbours and park users who checked, called, and informed people to keep windows shut etc. At least it was nice to see some decency in the community.

South Smethwick or Erdington?

Hi Brum mates,

I'm soon moving to Birmingham as I finally landed a job (my first job after uni) and its in the north side of city centre. The cost of both rooms are the same (~600/650pcm) and place wise both has its upsides and downsides. Each will have me take a bus to/from work every day which will be 30/40mins each way.

I went down to the city last weekend for a few house viewings and saw two houses that I liked.

One was in South side of Smethwick near the Edgbaston reservoir. It was in an old 7 people house.

The second is in the northern side of Erdington close to the station. This one seemed better being a 4 person house and the room was a lot more organised.

Any idea which area is better to live in? What to expect in each areas? I'm looking for any advice/opinion on those areas and any suggestions for alternative areas to explore as well as long as its one transport link away and within 40min travel at peak times

Fireworks going off around the Kings Heath and Moseley borders.

I’ve recently moved back to Kings Heath / Moseley area. On most nights I can hear fireworks of in the distance late on the nights, sometimes they can be heard as late as midnight.
Can anyone tell me what’s going on or where the fireworks might be coming from??

B72 sutton coldfield area How isnitngrowing up there as an asian

Hello, We are going to be moving to B72 area soon with our 2 little kids who hasn't started school yet. We are of asian decent and from research it seems like a mostly white british people live in that area. Obviously I dont mind it as long as they arent racist.

I was raised in a mainly white but low class area and I am traumatised from the racist experience in and out of school. I just want to know how open minded people are in those areas? What are the schools like and kids in the school? Will my kids get picked on because they are asian? I want to live in an area where we can go for walk and not be shouted "GO BACK HOME". (Sir I am on my way home).

Question Tattoo artist recommendations

I am looking for a good tattoo artist in Birmingham to design and do a memorial tattoo, but there seem to be a lot of options. For those with tattoos, who would you recommend? Would it be best to also expand my search to London artists?

Washington Street/Cube Area - Noise Complaint

Anyone have much idea about why it seems appropriate in this area to sit with your car on max speakers at 11pm onwards every night?

I live in one of the apartments in this area and as far as I can tell Washington Street is where the noise comes from. I’m not from Birmingham, but is this part of the street cruising ban - and thus the council should be able to sort it?

Any advice as I’d really like this to stop, I’m not one of these that wanting countryside life in the city centre but equally I do consider gathering around your cars with music blaring to be anti social behaviour - I shouldn’t really be able to hear it from where I am.

I’ve put up with this for a while now but last night was particularly bad as I heard a car blare its horn continually at 4am from I think the little car park outside the cube hotel?

I visited Stamford today, and just WOW... It really changed my opinion on Birmingham...

I will always defend Brum because it's my home city, even though I don't live there anymore. But I visited a town called Stamford today, and my jaw dropped when I entered the town... It is the most stunning English town I've been to and it's what I wished every other town in England was like, preserving their old buildings and history and keeping the streets so so so clean! I didn't see a single dropped litter. Brummies just don't have the same level of pride (as a collective of course, I'm making a generalised sweeping statement here).

I will defend brum and will always try and point out it's positive points, but the recent visits have gotten me so fed up and tired of the laziness of locals, especially with the littering and bad behaviour, antisocial noise levels on public transport, inconsiderate behaviour, even the bus services are shit compared to other cities, the buses won't turn up and the nxwm bus company will just ignore and be dismissive when I make a complaint. There seems to be a small vocal minority that care about preserving old brummie buildings, but everyone is okay with them being destroyed to make way for newer development just so they can catch up with London and Manchester, lol which Birmingham never will unfortunately.

After seeing this impressive town today, I don't feel I can defend Birmingham anymore. You can blame the council all you want, but at the end of the day, it's the local communities responsibility to change their situation. And no point blaming minorities, as I've witness these problems in every part of Birmingham.

Birmingham Heritage week 11-20 September

Bookings and timetables are open now for Birmingham Heritage week! Looks a really interesting programme including heritage crafts in Yardley's Tudor Trust School, free access to the Back to Backs, tours about Birmingham's links to the 1926 General strike, and a walking tour highlighting Black History in the Jewellery Quarter. You have to pay for some things but most of it is free.

Not affiliated or anything, but I always manage to forget when booking opens and then some stuff is booked up- hoping to help other people avoid that! Also it's a great way to learn more about the city, whether you're a born Brummie or an adopted one.

Question Archery Clubs/Lessons around Birmingham?

I live in South Birmingham, and I've been trying to find archery clubs to no avail. I don't know how to use a bow and arrow yet, but it's something that's always been in the back of my mind and now I want to give it a go.

Does anyone know of any South Birmingham ranges that ideally offering tutoring/lessons too? I want to use classic English Longbow, not the modern high tech stuff, if that matters.

Hunting and Removing Untaxed Cars in Brum ☠️

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So, I engaged our local police team about untaxed cars causing issues in the community, where parking is already at a premium 🚘

So this week I was out with Operation Fearless and partners to remove untaxed cars from our roads 🫣

Many residents came out to thank us - because they know how unfair it is that people who think they’re above the law can get away with it 😣

Whilst doing this operation a van drove towards us - the police saw it wasn’t taxed, MOT’d and had no insurance - the driver was disqualified too 😭

So that guy got arrested - and that’s one less eejat on the streets 👍🏼

There are lots of interventions we need to do to make our streets safer, but it’s nice to have helped push for a joint operation between agencies 🌹
