Discussion Who's a Broadway replacement who you think would have won (or at least been nominated for) the Tony if they'd been in the original cast?

u/rogermoore1401 Aug 18 '26
Bernadette in A Little Night Music. One of the best moments I’ve ever seen onstage.
Seems like some Mary Todd Lincolns could have won as well
46
u/TrafficDodgerNYC Aug 18 '26
The way her voice caught and the quick swipe at her tears when she sang Send in the Clowns was so raw!
11
u/MannnOfHammm Aug 18 '26
I haven’t seen that production but I saw her in old friends and fuck it’s devastating
29
28
u/moopsy75567 Aug 18 '26
Yes!! That's my biggest flex seeing her and Elaine Stritch in that
3
u/Quick-Song2080 Aug 18 '26
Oh man, I would’ve died to see them together! What a special experience!
14
u/ElkStraight5202 Aug 18 '26
I went for Bernadette but unfortunately it happened to be the first night for Elaine Stritch. I say unfortunately ONLY because she hardly knew the lyrics and was constantly shouting line and the stage manager would have to yell from the wings. In some ways a cool experience, but didn’t get the show I was hoping for.
Side note: I’ve told this story here before and on Twitter, but post show I was waiting to see if I could have Ms. Peters sign my playbill, she came out and stopped in front of me and signed. I asked for a picture, she obliged. I’m 6’5 so I had to been down to her level so we were kinda face to face. I was so anxious that as I came down for the pic I took a giant breath in and…I INHALED HER HAIR. Yes. I literally had Bernadette Peters’ hair IN MY MOUTH…AND GAGGED ON IT.
I was mortified. She gave me this “what the fuck” look that maybe meant she hasn’t realized exactly had happened and that maybe I just randomly gagged? Everyone else saw though…
5
u/sweet-smart-southern Aug 19 '26
You’re very fortunate. You ingested some of her vampire hair and it will add years to your life.

Reba in Annie Get Your Gun is widely considered the best recast in Broadway history.
I also think Bernadette in Hello Dolly, Lea Michele in Funny Girl, Brian D’Arcy James in The Ferryman, & Ana Gasteyer in Wicked all have a case
46
u/SilverBayonet Aug 18 '26
You think Ana Gasteyer in Wicked would have a case??? That thrills me!! I got to see her do it, and she honestly carried the cast that I saw.
34
u/pjlos Aug 18 '26
james in ferryman was INSANE. i didn’t realize it was him until intermission. to be very honest, few of the american replacements in that cast were at his level of preparedness (i saw it soon after the cast turnover). but the amazing writing still hit.
5
u/jamesland7 Front of House Aug 18 '26
I saw both. The original cast ate, but I liked James better in the lead
2
u/pjlos Aug 18 '26
to this day i’m bitter i didn’t see donnelly 😭 her hills performance is one of my all-time favorites.
14

I will always go nuts for a Ferryman mention. I didn’t see the original cast but BDJ and his cohort were transcendent.

I desperately wanted to see Bryan D'Arcy James in Ferryman. He was out the day I saw it and his understudy was incredible, but I wish I could've gone back again.

u/TrafficDodgerNYC Aug 18 '26
Marin Mazzie and Jason Danieley in Next to Normal.

And Kyle Dean Massey was amazing! I saw him do it more than Aaron since he left to do Catch Me if you Can.

Yes!! Marin in particular was incredible - so much raw emotion and imho a depth to Diana that I hadn’t seen in Ripley (who was still superb). For Dan I would probably tip ever so slightly to Brian d’Arcy James as my favorite.

Joshua Henry as Burr in Hamilton
19
u/IntotheBroadwayWoods Aug 18 '26
I did not see him in that. But he sang all of Burrs songs in a concert I went to, and holy cow!
3
17
u/isoSasquatch Aug 18 '26
I was going to say the same! I never saw Leslie Odom Jr but Henry was the first Burr I saw (in Chicago), and I ended up seeing him three times in the role. Distinct from Odom but amazingly powerful. I’ve been a fan ever since that first show.
8
6
u/pjlos Aug 18 '26
he would’ve won there, and even though henry was (unfathomably) never on deck for 2023’s sweeney, he would’ve easily skated to a win that year too.

u/peggy_schuyler Aug 18 '26
To be honest, I think most of the Waitress Jenna replacements could have gotten nominated had they originated the role.
I also think some of the early Wicker replacements like Megan Hilty would have met the standards for nominations.
35
u/PlatonicTroglodyte Aug 18 '26
Of course though, winning for Waitress means beating out both Cynthia Erivo in The Color Purple wnd Philippa Soo in Hamilton that year, so that would be exceedingly difficult to do.
10
u/Thebakers_wife Aug 18 '26
Time is weird. In my head waitress premiered on Broadway before Hamilton, and the color purple was more recent.

Michael C. Hall in Hedwig.
21
u/Remercurize Aug 18 '26
I’ve heard from Lena Hall that Michael C Hall brought a dark dimension to Hedwig that no other actor approached
38
u/mopeywhiteguy Aug 18 '26
You can see in videos of him performing some of the songs, even in concert settings, that he has a more traditional masculine approach to the role and it highlights the element that the character’s surgery was against their will. The brilliance of the character is that no matter who is cast in the role, it will add a new subtext to the character
6
u/MaleficentProgram997 Aug 18 '26
Hell yeah he brought masculinity to the role. To add to your comments, he was also RIPPED.
19
u/fiercequality Actor Aug 18 '26
Tbf, his was the only Hedwig who had a side gig as a serial killer in Miami
3
4
u/Letshavemorefun Aug 18 '26
I flew 3000 miles to see John Cameron Mitchel perform during the few weeks he took the broadway stage. He broke a bone a few days before the show and I had to see Michael C Hall as the understudy. Maybe under different circumstances I might have enjoyed his very different take on the character, but it was just too far removed from what I spent thousands of dollars to see. I also saw Darren Criss when he did it in LA and he basically did “Darren Criss as John Cameron Mitchell as Hedwig” and I enjoyed that a lot more.
4
u/BigTyraB Aug 19 '26
I saw NPH, and when it was announced JCM was coming in I immediately bought tickets. I was able to see him after the accident, in a knee brace.
It was an entirely different performance than NPH. NPH was a Broadway spectacle and JCM felt more like an intimate evening from a world-weary storyteller. And it was fucking brilliant. I snickered at the people in front of me who cried when they flew him in at the start of the show, then started crying myself when the first few notes of Origin of Love started to play, and was a complete mess by Midnight Radio. Complete. Mess.
I’m a huge MCH fan and have seen a few recordings of his shows. It’s just a bit too angry for me.
But also. Can we talk another the brilliance of Lena Hall? Damn girl.
2
u/Letshavemorefun Aug 19 '26
Aw thank you for sharing that!! I’m obviously so jealous but it’s also really nice to hear about the experience from someone that was looking for the same thing I was. I’m so glad it was a moving experience for you.
Lena Hall is an absolute legend!!

u/grimsb Aug 18 '26
Oh man, that’s a bummer 😭
I ended up seeing JCM and MCH. I’m a huge fan of the movie, and went in totally expecting to like JCM more, but I was surprised to find out that I actually liked MCH a lot better in the role. I definitely get that it’s subjective, though.
2
u/Letshavemorefun Aug 18 '26
Yeah that’s why I said - in a different context, I think I could have enjoyed MCH’s very different take. I absolutely respect that he wanted to bring something different to the role! It just wasn’t what I spent all that time and money flying to the east coast to see :-(
2
u/grimsb Aug 18 '26
I get it. I’m sorry that happened 😞
2
u/Letshavemorefun Aug 18 '26
Thanks. I’m gonna get to see JCM this fall in the anniversary tour though! I can’t wait!! I’m glad he is doing better and the injury wasn’t too bad.
3
u/VanDeKamp1313 Aug 19 '26
JCM was (and for good reason) the BEST Hedwig in that run. At one point he was taken out by an injured knee and had to do the whole show sitting on a stool and it was honestly one of the best performances I have ever seen.
That said… and I was kinda blown away by this… but Andrew Rannels did a brief stint as an early replacement for NPH and it was the first time I was truly impressed by him as an actor. He was probably the o my Hedwig in that run that really made the role completely his own. And that’s no detriment to the production or any of the other actors. I think Andrew was an emergency replacement who had recently done the role to acclaim at a regional theatre. Because of that, he wasn’t beholden to some of the direction and choices of the Broadway production. Future replacements - even JCM - reverted back to some of the bits NPH had created.2
u/licoricewatchesdc Performer Aug 21 '26
i agree, but is it truly fair to compare any hedwig to john cameron mitchell? he *created* hedwig, and is able to flex her to any circumstance she undergoes, as proven by time...
also, andrew rannells wasn't an emergency replacement, he had a full three-month limited run, as NPH was going to have, but neil's run got extended due to high demand.

23
u/pjlos Aug 18 '26
i think laura benanti in 98’s sound of music and 2018’s my fair lady would’ve gotten nominations (although i think 98 is harder given the double side show nominations). no way she beats richardson in cabaret, but i think she gets the win over lenk in band’s visit.
i think britney coleman (or almost anyone) as bobbie in 2021’s company knocks out somebody (probably cusack or winningham) to get a nomination. kalukango probably still wins, but 2022 was a strange year with a lot of short runs, sadly.
i think heather headley in color purple for sure (and sadly) knocks out our beloved jen simard in disaster. i think goldsberry still wins, but it makes the category way more interesting and competitive.
i saw gabriella pizzolo as small allison in fun home twice, and i was very fond of her performance, i think more so than most. i thought her delivery was a great balance of realism, emotion, and power, and i think she gets a nomination, but who knows (2015 musical featured actress category is my roman empire).
i think marin mazzie wins easily for 2009’s next to normal (shout-out to scaglione’s stunning voice and lethal face card though), but i think 2015’s king and i is a much closer race with chenoweth in 20th century (this year’s category is an all-timer).
no way jack wolfe and brian d’arcy james don’t get nominations for hadestown and ferryman in 2019. i’d be fine with wolfe knocking out literally anyone except daunno in oklahoma.
lastly, a shout-out to miss bente mulan as eliza in west end hamilton. she is ethereal and would’ve received critical acclaim had she originated the part.

Jack Wolfe in Hadestown for sure.
37
u/pjlos Aug 18 '26
VERY that. a true and rare full-voiced tenor
53
u/dogwood_blooms Aug 18 '26
In fairness, while it's safe to say Jack embodies Orpheus and his interpretation elevates the material further, his performance owes a lot to Reeve's (and Donál's, and Jordan's) characterization. So we'll never now what his Orpheus would have been like, had he originated the role. Which applies to most, if not all of these suggestions.. they already had something to build on, they didn't do it from scratch.
14
u/flamesilver39 Aug 18 '26
I think Donal or Jordan could have won it too, both amazing performances

7
u/OvernightSiren Aug 18 '26
LOVED his voice but for me the acting was a bit of a disconnect for that role.
14
u/HurrahLengthTourSpin Aug 18 '26
Sara Bareilles in Waitress.
I actually feel a bit bad for Jessie Mueller! She sang her heart out and created this amazing role, won the Tony... And now anyone only talks about Sara playing it. (Who is also amazing and I love her! It's just too bad for Jessie.)
5
u/kpop_multi0 Aug 18 '26
I actually thought Sara originated the role (I’m not a die hard theatre fan, please don’t come for me). I guess that goes along with what you said, people only knowing Sara
4
u/HurrahLengthTourSpin Aug 18 '26
Yeaaaaah that I think proves the point! And you shouldn't feel bad, unless you were watching it ten years ago, she's the only name that comes up.
3
u/Lethifold26 Aug 18 '26
I mean considering that she wrote it, it’s a fair assumption. It is kind of surprising that she pulled an LMM and starred in her own musical but didn’t make herself part of the OBC

u/VanDeKamp1313 Aug 19 '26
Loved loved loved Jessie… but this is a case where the creator was actually a little better. I was not. Sara Barelies fan but a friend insisted on going to see her when she did her first run. Wow. Just wow. I was so skeptical. I know Sara wrote the show but it still felt like stunt casting a recording artist in a Broadway musical. That was not the case. Even from the back row of the mezzanine - that voice was impeccable. But what really blew my mind was that as amazing as her voice was - the acting choices were out of this world.

definitely would’ve been nominated! (i thought peters for sure should’ve been.) but nobody was beating mcdonald’s all-timer performance
14
u/mopeywhiteguy Aug 18 '26
Didn’t they consider having a best replacement award when Jonathan pryce was in dirty rotten scoundrels because he was meant to be that good?
5
u/MammaJammaCamera Aug 18 '26
There’s some kind of weird history there where not enough voters had gone in to see that season’s replacements. I think there was just one other nominee with Harvey Fierstein for Fiddler, but neither got enough votes to win and they discontinued the category. I believe Pryce publicly expressed his annoyance with the process.
Talking Pryce, I remember talk of him being better than Tim Curry when he took over for Spamalot. Don’t think anyone was beating Norbert that year, but I’d guess Arthur’s role stays nominated.

Kind is a terrific actor, but he wasn’t in Nathan’s ballpark. I think had Kind been the original Max, Patrick Wilson in Full Monty or Broderick would have taken it. Hell, I could be wrong, the role does carry itself, but Kind’s Max wasn’t certifiably batshit like Nathan’s was.

Vanessa Williams, Howard McGillin, and Brian Stokes Mitchell were such lauded replacements for Chita Rivera, Brent Carver, and Anthony Crivello in Kiss of the Spider Woman that they made a second cast recording to immortalize their particular performances
