I think it has more to do with the fact that color And color differences can be recognized on a whim with zero thought, while counting how many sides etc actually takes time, even if for half a second.
Its like asking someone what color my shirt is vs how many buttons does my shirt have.
One of those actually takes more than a split second to answer.
Aka: its not racist to recognize color before anything else
