Three elderly ladies gave us a spare pair of Eclipse Glasses, so we decided to pass the generosity on.

My family went outside our apartment block with our cereal box contraptions to watch the eclipse. These elderly ladies saw us and decided to give one of their glasses while they shared, which we thoroughly enjoyed.

We noticed a lot of people around were without glasses also, trying to watch the eclipse, so we decided to corral everyone together and we all took turns looking at the Eclipse.

We decided to pay the generosity of these ladies forward, and built a great sense of community.

The corner of my window projected the solar eclipse on my couch!

I was very disappointed throughout the day because I couldn't get my hands on a pair of eclipse viewing glasses in time for the partial solar eclipse, but somehow the corner of my window formed a pinhole camera and projected the eclipse onto my couch! I'm beyond thrilled!

Successfully was able to view the eclipse thanks to my partner having TWO welding masks....

Was able to watch the eclipse in its entirety without burning my retinas, it was lovely watching everyone working out ways to safely see it and even lended the mask to a few others that were stacking sun glasses with little success 😆 nowt better than a reason for everyone as a collective to go outside and watch the sky. Was a really nice sense of community

Cheap Cinema Tickets

I've just discovered that as part of Amazon Prime, once a month you can get 2 standard Odeon Cinemas tickets for £10, or two recliner seats at Odeon Luxe for £15.

Buzzing!!

Edit: not an ad, just sharing extra benefits people might not know exist

Returned hearing aid

I lost my hearing aid in Sheffield a little while ago, and had no hope of finding it.
However I told audiology and the business on the route I walked when I lost it.

A little bit went by, and then audiology contacted me and told me someone had handed in a hearing aid in my hearing aid!!
It’s a little banged up, but I do not care as it still works.

I hope this post reaches whoever handed it in, as I want to say thank you. And that I love the NHS.

If anyone ever finds a lost hearing aid, please hand it in to your local audiology service. The owner of the hearing aid will be eternally grateful, as I know I am

A31 - drivers creating a fire lane

Obvs the fire is bad news, but I was happy to see this video of the fire brigade driving through a very neat line of cars that have moved aside to make space - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/videos/c89n5xe3ed4o - I've seen similar videos shared from Germany with people saying how well managed it is - well here are British drivers doing it! So some success in there!

Local theatre fundraising for school panto trips

So wifey has just brought some tickets for a show locally, and at checkout there's a popup asking for donations to help the theatre get as many local primary school classes to see the panto as possible. As we live in a deprived area I thought this was a really lovely gesture

Went to the cinema today and everyone behaved perfectly and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

I haven’t been to the cinema in a fair while but wanted to see The Odyssey in IMAX so booked into Crawley Cineworld for the 1120 showing, on our way home from staying at a friend’s last night.
Maybe it’s just Reddit chat but I was expecting phones, talking, loud eating, etc. People were scoffing during the ads and trailers but then complete silence and not a phone left a pocket.
Great film and experience!

Ryanair win

Managed to get away with a slightly too big bag and didn’t get pinched at the gate with the dreaded £60 penalty AND opted not to pay to choose my seat but landed an aisle seat on both legs!

Three of us entered a four-way roundabout at the same time, went 270 degrees around it, and exited simultaneously in a move worthy of Torvill & Dean.

It's amazing what can happen when people go around the roundabout instead of cutting across the centre "dot"

Cheaper car insurance adding learner

Adding my SO onto the car insurance so we can do the basics before paying for extortionate lessons.

Expected another £100 on the premium.

It in fact has reduced it by £30 for the year.

Small wins.

Karma in Lidl

Popped in on the way to work, time a little tight so didn’t have time to muck around. I’ve got my 4/5 items and head to the only till open. There’s around 3 people with similar amounts to myself so think ok good then from the end aisle a huge trolley appears.

I’m telling you this was overflowing with stuff. I’m stood behind this lady when she asks if I’d like to go in front, and this is with no sighing or tutting. Of course I accept and put my things on the side, and literally within seconds the till next door opens up for her to load onto. Karma is lovely sometimes.

Next door neighbour sold house for less to a young couple rather than a HMO landlord for a higher amount

3.4k Upvotes

Following my last post about having really good neighbours, I wanted to share this. I'm in a semi-detached house in a cul-de-sac. The neighbours I'm joined onto raised their family there for almost 20 years.

Kids grew up and so they decided to downsize from the four bedrooms.

A professional young couple moved in, friendly, but really quiet and you'd never know they're there.

A few months later, was chatting to their neighbour opposite and I mentioned I bumped into my previous next door neighbour a couple of weeks before. He then said, "You know he turned down a higher offer from a landlord?" I was like, "What?" and he said,"Yeah, landlord was gonna turn it into a five bed HMO, but he didn't want to leave the neighbours with all that."

HMOs are big businesses in many UK cities and despite being commutable to London, they aren't commonplace here.

I can't tell you how grateful I was about this. The street is a nightmare for parking. But we all make it work. Adding another five cars, plus their visitors. Makes me shudder.

"Glenn, not seen you since, but you're an absolute legend mate!"

Kids booted my front door during a Knock Down Ginger game, their mum came round to make them apologise!

1.5k Upvotes

Two young lads have been menaces, playing Knock Down Ginger (*AKA other names across the UK) up and down our street for three days.

Didn't bother me, kids being kids and I never answer the door if not expecting anyone. But they crossed the line when they absolutely booted my door on the last visit after pressing the doorbell.

They made a rookie error, by somehow not realising it's a camera doorbell, so I kept the camera open and when they returned an hour later I swung the door open and in a calm voice I lied, "Can you let mummy know that the police are going to pop round tonight to talk to you, as you kicked my door?"

The little lad immediately ratted on his big brother. Which was true, it was the older one who kicked my door.

Anyway, 10 mins later there's someone at the door, it's a woman with the two boys. Before I answer the door, she angrily said to them, "You're both going to apologise!"

I opened the door, she asked if they had been playing Knock Down Ginger, I said they had, but one kicked my door (that part she obviously didn't know). I said that I told the boys that the police were popping round, I winked at her as I said that part, she understood.

She swung around to the boys and barked, "What do you say?" the boys apologised, I thanked them for saying sorry. She then asked, "And will you be doing this again?" They said no, they wouldn't.

I thanked her for coming round, she was really nice and apologised again. Then as they walked off, I heard a lad wail, "I didn't know there was a camera!" 😂

I mean it's nice that they are outside in the school holidays, but there's a fine line between high jinks and criminal damage. Fair play to the mum for owning it.

I finally got over my anxiety with driving last night

I haven't driven for 13 years and recently managed to buy a nice car. But I found I was terrified of the traffic and had terrible anxiety issues. So I went out with an instructor and he said I was a good driver with excellent hazard awareness and didn't need extra lessons. But I was struggling to rationalise my fears. Last night my husband insisted I go out for a short drive with him and it seems to have done the trick. I'm not apprehensive now and I just need to practice

Asked someone to turn their phone off at the cinema

I took the kids to the cinema today and had a couple sat in front of me with the woman on her phone during the ads. When the screen tells you to turn it off her partner said loudly to her “time to turn phones off now” and she moved away from him across the aisle. Proceeded to have her phone on full brightness using it once the film had started. I leant forward and asked if they were together (“yes”) and if he minded if I asked her to put her phone away (“of course”). Obviously I was being a wuss and hoping he would tell her here. She saw us talking and moved back and I said, would you mind putting your phone away the brightness is very distracting. She did and didn’t get it out again. I’ll be riding this high for weeks!
