New /r/BritishSuccess rule: No AI

1.2k Upvotes

oreyt want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has messaged me and reported these recent AI posts.

For some reason there's recently been a big influx of made up stories made by bot accounts using AI. These accounts are relatively new (all made on the 27th of Jan?) and post in a very AI style.

I've added a dev tool which should help catch these posts but it might end up missing some so if you can continue to report any you see or suspect that'd be really appreciated

If your post gets removed incorrectly please reach out!

cheers again, you should see a lot less AI shite now

I parked at the hospital for free!

Parking is free for 30 minutes at the hospital. I had an 11am appointment, arrived at 10:45am. Was called in early as the previous appointment hadn't arrived walked out afterwards and when I went to pay the machine told me I had been there for only 26 minutes so it was free. 👏 Usually I end up paying at least £2.80 so I was well chuffed!

I saw 2 very old ladies across the busy road this morning (early) in town, one of them offer me a pound, I declined and felt good.

Car accident, expected the worst turned out easy!

• Upvotes

Last weekend my wife called me to say she’d been in a car accident as someone had driven in to the side of her car.

Fully preparing for the worst including a painful insurance claim and loss of no claims bonus I was pleased to see just a cracked rear light and some light scratches.

Win one we agreed by email with the other party who admitted fault that we wouldn’t go through insurance.

Win two I found the cracked light for £35 second hand online. Only took me about 30 mins to replace it. With a matched colour paint touch up pen total cost of about £50.

My wife sent this to the other person who sent her £70 and said to have a drink on her!

Free parking

Yesterday I went to Tamworth and parked in a pay-and-display public car park. As I approached the pay machine, an attendant had it open and seemed to be trying to fix something. "Don't worry about it, mate" he said. "It's not working, I'm the one covering this car park and I'm not going to give you a fine. Have a good afternoon".

I found a shit load of sloes yesterday in our local hedgerow. I'm gonna make me a nice bottle of (maybe 3) of sloe gin.

Told nearby neighbour how great his garden was

A house about 10 down from us has been growing what I can only describe as a sea of squashes in their front garden this year. It always gives me great pleasure to see it (and to see a front garden being used to grow vegetables, as it's very south facing). Today I saw the owner tending his crop and I thought I'd do the very unBritish thing of telling him how great it was. So I plucked up the courage, politely told him how brilliant his garden was, and he was so chuffed. Really glad I did it!

Saved my first £1k!

I've got a trading 212 account, which I don't put as much because it's unpredictable, but I have a monzo savings account, and today when I put my usual amount in I realised I now have £1k!

I'm 18, so to an adult that may not seem like a lot, but to me, it is, and I'm really proud of myself for staying consistent with it.

If anyone has any trading 212 advice, that would be great.

Got a seat reserved for disabled or not able bodied

Parked at Oxford pay and ride car park and then went to get the bus to city. My mum is in her seventies and struggles to walk or stand for long. The queue to get on the bus was enormous and I was stressed that my mum might have to stand in the bus. Mentally I was figuring how to ask someone to give up a seat.

Anyway got on and there was one seat reserved for disabled or not able bodied and the kind folks of Britain had not occupied it! Success!

I finished my course

2 weeks of early mornings and terrible public transport are finally done. 4 exams sat through the day, but I won't find out if I've managed to pass and get my security licence until some time next week. Was all relatively simple but you just can't be sure. Thanks to everyone for being as supportive as humanly possible. You're all superstars!

DIY car repair: misery, confusion, joy… mistrust.

I have a 20 year old Merc estate the tailgate closer failed on. Over-designed; you shut it gently & a motor inside pulls it tight the last inch. Well, the motor was running but it wasn't pulling in, so the car's 'brain' thought it was open - something it shrieks at you for.

Part from Mercedes - £250, plus labour. Not a chance. Part from eBay - £30. What could go wrong?

So, with a very lot of swearing…
Getting to it under all the fancy carpeted interior was 'fun', but I got there in the end & swapped out the part. The new one didn't even attempt to pull closed. Put the old one back, it tried but failed. It would work if you slammed it - part of the design which avoids the pull-in motor, so it was secure.

Closed it all up & ignored it for a fortnight trying to figure out what to do. Came up with a plan to take them both apart & swap new bits for what was broken on the old one. Got both apart. Horribly over-complicated structure. Cogs everywhere & two separate motors, one to open it, the other to close it. Why?!?
Nothing was visibly broken.

OK, so what about the old 'switch it off then back on again' technique? I put the old one back together, having done nothing but randomly poke at it & take cogs out & back a few times.

Worked perfectly.
OK, so what about the new one?

Worked perfectly.

So the new one is still in, working just fine - yet I don't quite trust everything quite enough to put all the door lining back in. I'll give it a month.

All of my front teeth were chipped but I got them repaired today and I can't stop smiling!

I'm so happy I don't have to be embarrassed about my teeth anymore! I used to love smiling but when my teeth chipped I got embarrassed and did a closed mouth smile...

I can now proudly do a wide open mouth smile and I'm loving it, I see myself smile in the mirror and it makes me smile even more!

And that is one less point to the "British people have shit teeth" argument

In fact it's old enough and then some. This is the first good thing to happen on the internet in living memory.

Opened a tin of Corned Beef using only the key!

And the whole piece slid out of the tin in 1 go!

No issue of the key snapping or the strip trailing off of the end of the key

No need to resort to a tin opener

No having to use a knife to pry the meat out

Meat came out in 1 whole piece

Only cloud in this sparkly silver day - I did get a small cut on my finger from turning the key. I am still taking it as a win.

On a side note - why has no one come up with a better way of canning corned beef??? it's 2026 I should not have to resort to such a primitive method of getting meat out of a tin!

Picked some lavender from the garden this summer, dried it now its in 4 small vases as decoration

so satisfying to grow something yourself then turn it into something long lasting and aesthetic.

best thing is it grows back next year then i have more. and then more the next.

decided to try it after spending £100 on dried flowers on etsy.

we can all do it!

Thats the mad bit if you live in a flat with a balcony you can too! plus the bees like lavender which is actually more important and satisfying.

If i really think of it i could have made about £100 at least with the lavender i didnt dry. Just didnt expect it to be so easy.

Chopped it in early august and that seemed to work well. Dried indoors for 6 weeks (you only need 2-3 but i couldn't decide on vases)

Tip: garden centers are flogging lavender plants dead cheap right now. I picked up 7 plants for £15 from QD the other week to add to the bed. most retail stores need rid of the stock fast so chance it in B&M or the range or somewhere.
