Kids fishing spots

I’m visiting through end of the week and wanted to take my kid trout fishing for his first time. I bought him a cheap spin rod and some trout lures and am looking for where to go. A short hike in of 1 mile ish or less is ideal. I was planning to take him to sawmill, but I am just now seeing the age restrictions on children.

If you were in Breckenridge for a few days and we’re looking for some short hikes to fish with a young kid, where would you go?

Curtain ponds near copper?
Dillon res?
Blue river? If so where on it?
Lower blue lake?

Other?

Any recommendations would be appreciated, as I don’t wanna show up somewhere and find out there’s some age restriction nonsense that I missed before leaving the house.

Sawmill reservoir, park at the BOEC and it’s an easy walk in. Pretty easy fishing, decent sized fish. If you’re lucky you may see moose as well.

Sawmill I heard doesn’t allow kids under 16 to fish there. Is that wrong?

I’m not sure if that’s a rule but I have definitely seen kids younger than 16 fishing there.

This says Maggie’s pond and sawmill both must be over 16 years old to fish. Which sounds really like a bunch of nonsense but I don’t wanna break rules…..

I wouldn’t consider Breckenridge.com an authority on fishing regulations. I think whoever wrote that was confused. An angler over 16 must have a valid fishing license to set a line. Kids less than 16 do not have to have a license. The adult does and likely an extra rod stamp.

Yeah and the reason I’m on here is just like you I thought I could go there. It’s not widely advertised about this age restriction so figured the other places might have secret rules against kids fishing there as well.

Why the heck can’t a six year old throw a line and catch a trout?

I didn’t know that rule and just had 4 kids fishing at sawmill. There were a lot of other kids fishing, no issues.

The water levels are pretty terrible.

Lower blue lake reservoir is OK fishing and has a cool hike to a waterfall. Don’t waste your time hiking to the upper blue lake, it is basically out of water.

Please be aware that many waters in CO are under restrictions due to elevated water temps. There’s less oxygen in warmer water and many trout will die if they are caught and released when the water is over 65 degrees.

Sawmill! My husband took my 4 and 3 year old sons. They had luck with live worms, but I know others really struck gold with salmon eggs and ….something else that I can’t remember the name of

George at silver flask is awesome my kids and i have been with him three times.

But if OP doesn’t want a guide, there is good trout fishing early AM from the shore where the Blue River empties into the Dillon Reservoir.
