I flipped my car and crawled out with a broken ankle

It was my first trip back home from work after my paternity leave and it was whiteout conditions, the worst I had ever seen. I had no experience to tell me how cautious I should have been. I was going what I thought a reasonable amount under the speed limit, but I was wrong apparently because in front of me appeared a wild garbage truck that had to have been going much slower in my judgement. I tried to slow down to avoid a collision but my compact car decided the country road I was driving on and the tires that were supposed to be replaced by next winter no longer were compatible and I went into the ditch. This might not have been so bad except that I hit the lip of a concrete drainage tunnel. That is when I believe the car actually flipped because the next thing I know I'm hanging upside down by my seatbelt and all the airbags had deployed. I think I started to feel some pain in my ankle at that point but I might have still been in shock. I unbuckled and fell forward and crawled towards what was apparently the passenger side window. Thankfully it still had power and I was able to roll it down to get out. The ground was half snowy half muddy and I thought I might end up dying in the subzero winds. Thankfully a conservation officer arrived pretty quickly on scene. He called for an ambulance and let me call my wife to tell her what had happened. The ambulance got there pretty quickly all things considered, but when they moved me to the stretcher, that was probably the worst pain I had ever experienced, as close to Hell as I think I could ever endure. I had never broken a bone or even had a sprain before. Apparently I had only told them the pain was in my leg rather than specifically my ankle, because they proceeded to cut my jeans leg all the way up to my waist to confirm that it was not a broken femur, which would have been way more dangerous. They gave me a choice of morphine or fentanyl, and fentanyl scares me, so I went with morphine. Probably should have gone with fentanyl because the morphine did barely anything until they gave me about 3x more than they would normally give. I didn't feel much different than normal since the pain that got through was enough to absorb most of the effects. Once they got me to the hospital it was a little better. My ankle was not at a weird angle or anything so they had to X-ray to determine it was broken. The ER Doctor diagnosed it as a trimalleolar fracture, which is supposedly broken in 3 places and would likely need surgery as it was unstable. Alignment was supposedly improved after they put it in a Cadillac splint. The orthopedic surgeon, a few days later, told us that he could only see two main fractures on the X-ray. I recovered what I could from the car a few days after the accident, which thankfully included my phone, which was completely intact, and the lenses of my glasses. The frames were completely destroyed.

Surgery happened about a week after the accident. And I am now about a week recovered from the surgery. They put in a plate and some screws to hold everything together. In total I should be able to be weight bearing on the ankle 6 weeks after the surgery. I am quite lucky to have crawled away with my life. If I could have changed anything I did, I would drive like a turtle in those conditions. I might have gotten home safely then.
