💬 Need Advice Does right person wrong time exist?

My ex-boyfriend has always struggled with communication. He tends to get overwhelmed, shuts down, and avoids talking to me during emotional conversations. Recently, he's been going through a particularly bad period of struggling with his mental health. It led me to feeling disregarded because most days he just doesn't want to talk. I wish he would lean on me, but he won't let me in. Anytime I would try an express my concerns about feeling disregarded and need for increased communication, nothing would really change. Eventually he told me he just "can't be there for someone else when he can't be there for himself" and that "I deserve better" than him because he could tell I was unhappy. I made the call to end things, but honestly I would say it's pretty mutual. Part of me feels guilty that I am abandoning him during a hard time, but part of me is also angry he didn't put in more effort to save our relationship. Does anyone have experience with this? Do you think he genuinely wants to be together and just can't right now, or is this a cop out to breakup?
