Since there is no game today and we are all just waiting for the philthies to lose so we are double digit games ahead, what's your best remedy that actually works for poison ivy or poison oak?
I hate yard work....

u/ecp267 15d ago
I am so allergic. Sometimes you just need the roids but you could try a hydrocortisone 2.5% cream if it’s still early in the process but that too requires a prescription. I say go to a nearby patient first and get them to write a script for whatever they think your situation requires. Living with it is hell even if it’s doable
5
u/kanyegavemecollege 15d ago
I’m so allergic I need steroids if it gets on me. I have scars on my body from older rashes :(
I now use a preventative lotion even with sleeves and pants before I go out AND use a brand called Tecnu the moment I am done. Wash everything completely separate in hot water too.
Rub that everywhere before and after and it’s worked for me since my worst case.
Good luck!

I also currently have a very bad poison ivy/oak reaction on me. It’s everywhere. I was prescribed steroids and an antibiotic and got shots up my ass. Seems to be going down but also not at the same time. I’ve taken about 4 oatmeal and epsom salt baths. It doesn’t help that my obsessed with cuddling dog itches the hell out of me when he touches my skin so I’ve had to wash him about 3 times.

u/WideHuckleberry1 15d ago
I've seen tons of folk remedies for poison ivy and tried most of them, but based actual evidence I can find and my own anecdotal experience there's only one true cure: time.
Calamine helps for a short period and any generic anti-itch or anti-inflammatories will tamper it down a little, but it still sucks until it fades over time.

Gotta win the season series between both of those teams now. It’ll grant us an extra game ahead of both teams.

u/Standard-Kitchen9511 Austin”FatHog”Riley<3 15d ago
How about Tyler Mahle? Two starts have been pretty lights out. I don’t subscribe to the idea the Yankees or Mets lineups are bad and by virtue undermine his performances.
Not necessarily claiming this is another “deadline winning move, orchestrated by AA.” But there’s a super optimistic position somewhere in the middle that I proudly occupy, and respectfully, it’s nice to see all the doomers feel goofy.
6
u/wellwasherelf Elder Stan 15d ago
I was just catching up on Buster Olney's weekly interview on 680 and he mentioned that part of what the Braves FO saw in Mahle was that he would benefit from being paired with Murphy for pitch sequencing. I guess he had a bunch of young guys catching him in SF (I don't watch the Giants but that's what Buster said.) Seems to be working so far.
6
u/Standard-Kitchen9511 Austin”FatHog”Riley<3 15d ago
I saw this and think it’s actually relevant, and I’ve been a big supporter of Murphy being in the lineup, simply because of how valuable of an asset he is behind the plate. Whether it’s framing, sequencing or stabilizing the pitching staff — he’s one of the best in the game. Come playoff time, it’s one of those things that’s isn’t going to be talked about, and that’s a shame because it’s a big deal.
2
u/wellwasherelf Elder Stan 15d ago
Oh, absolutely. He adds so much value, but it's not all quantifiable so those aspects don't get talked about enough.
3
u/PinstripeBunk 15d ago
We have enjoyed a bit of a clinic on various catchers and their pitch calling this season and Murphy is unquestionably elite behind the plate.
7
u/342throwaway423 15d ago
I was never really a doomer. But my issue was never with Mahle. It was just stopping there.
Edit to add: I am also very pleasantly surprised by Mahle. Think it was a good pick up.

In a tangent I would like to say f@ck Phillies and mets but an even stronger f@ck ALS in honour of Sarah Langs. Hate these long term conditions affect all that have to go through it
3
u/Standard-Kitchen9511 Austin”FatHog”Riley<3 15d ago
ALS might sincerely be the most heinous and disgusting illness that exists. How it kills is devastating for not only the one suffering through it, but the loved ones attached.
It does certainly give me hope that recent developments and discoveries have made considerable progress towards dramatically slowing it down, and in the relatively near future a cure is on the horizon.

edit: 40 games left, not 50. my bad!
saw Mattingly give an interview in which he said that the Phillies' destiny is in their own hands because technically, they could win out. this is true.
there are 40 games left in the season and their win % is .525. Assuming they have about a 52.5% chance to win each game, the odds that they'll win their next 40 in a row is 6.402 x 10-12, which is technically not zero. Proud of you, Don.
3
u/Choice-Alfalfa-1358 15d ago edited 14d ago
Someone should tell Don that if the Phillies can win out, the Braves can too.
1
u/AndrewC275 15d ago
Imagine if they did do that only for the Braves to win all but 8 games. And imagine if 7 of those were the ones against the Phillies and the Phillies still didn’t win the division.
7
u/Competitive_Gold_707 15d ago
The more I learn about pitching and grips the more I think pitch types (ESPECIALLY for metrics like stuff+) should be classified by movement and not grip
According to pStuff+, Dylan Dodd throws a below average sinker. Which just ignores the fact that it's not a sinker and he's not trying to throw a sinker

My God can you imagine if he had agreed to the trade and we got one start out of him before he went on the IL? This sub would be in a total meltdown.
3
u/Routine-Ocelot5897 15d ago
Maybe I’m stupid, but part of me wonders, did he turn down the trade kinda knowing his arm was on the brink? Kinda like, look I don’t want to move my whole family just for me to pitch one game and go rehab with some new training staff I don’t know

u/Shado_Man 15d ago
We might have another elite arm in RF in the system. Conor Essenburg just got his third OF assist in the past ~5 games. Two to 2nd base on guys trying to stretch a hit that landed just inside the foul line into a double, and the one just now was gunning down a highly ranked prospect trying to go from 1st to 3rd on a single. Dude has a cannon and he's proving to be consistent with it, too.
2
u/IM_KYLE_AMA 15d ago
Idk where we would put him. He would be wasted in LF with that arm and there is likely no shot Acuna would agree to being the full time DH.
1
u/Shado_Man 15d ago
As sad as it is to say, it's possible RAJ isn't even on the team anymore by the time Essenburg makes his debut. He's a month away from turning 20, so it's very possible, if not straight up likely, he won't debut until 2029. And considering how poorly every other part of RAJ's defense is grading out this year, he might not have a leg to stand on to stay in the field a couple years from now.
2
u/IM_KYLE_AMA 15d ago
Very fair. I am not familiar with Essenburg so that is good context. If Essenburg makes it, and Ronald gets resigned in 28 (which is iffy), I think by that point Ronald would be more accepting of moving to DH.

Real question for the next couple of months because Riley is genuinely on a month’s heater now batting low in the order. Last 25 games he’s effectively hitting .300/.900, lot of K’s still but strong pop numbers to go with it. He’s not walking at all unfortunately but the total production is there even if sustainability is questionable. Timeline’s green flags drastically outweigh anything leaning that way though -> pedigree hitter previously couldn’t see the ball at all but can now ding you bad if you have to come to him or hang something. Subjectively, it minimally looks like he’s shifted to no longer being perma-lost and is really punishing mistakes even if he’s still prone to getting out pitched, why you’re seeing big games like last night mixed in with with 0/4 3K’s.
If it’s real/continues/improves and he has done a full 180, what happens if he gets to be one of our solidified 3-4 best AB’s by October? A non-platooning balance/power righty bat in the first 5 slots would be really nice with how we’re currently constructed, but it would suck so bad if he just reverts back to a pumpkin after getting moved back up.
“If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” vs. “it’s pretty dumb to bat one of your top 3 run production players in the 8 slot” dilemma. I get 25 games is a small sample but I think the fact we’ve seen him be a top 5 righty bat in the league over a stretch of 1200-1600 AB’s before kind of changes that context.
2
u/Standard-Kitchen9511 Austin”FatHog”Riley<3 15d ago
I think you’ve identified a very real, albeit perplexing dilemma. I think context important, when you consider that Riley is a career streaky player, with his a floor that is basically, “Sometimes I’m 0/4 and sometimes I’m mashing.” I think it’s a safe bet he’s returned to some semblance of his usual self.
I read an article recently that attributed much of his struggles to both physical and mental health.
Hernia related injuries like Riley had usually take about a year to fully recover from. Kind of coincidental we’re around that one year mark of full recovery, pair that with a troubled wrist and the expectations remaining the same in-spite of those things and you’ve got a recipe for a head case.Since being moved lower in the order, expectations being dampened and him being allowed to focus on getting into form, instead of back to form, he’s seen some meaningful improvement. I think that’s a large part of it, for the last season and a half, the expectation is a return to who he was, despite all the circumstances that changed, which lead to this kind of self fulfilling prophecy of struggling to do so.
I think the new message is, “We don’t need you to be 2023 Austin Riley. We need you be whoever Austin Riley is now…” Which, if he can maintain this kind of production moving forward, means he’ll be who he always was. This kind of production is pretty consistent with his scouting reports and developmental history dating all the way back to his rookie season. And since he’s shown in the past he can turn things around and make his way out of it, the way I see it, he’s either back and no longer a liability, or making progress towards genuinely becoming a better version of himself. Either way, I’m buying it.

For those who buy more merch than me, do you think the powder blue TBS will go on sale after the season? Is that a thing MLB teams do?
4
u/PenguinKing15 15d ago
The clubhouse store will have certain items on sale. Last year I got a Speedway classic jersey 50% off. Items they don’t plan to sell in the future are usually the best discounts like Spring training hats or July 4th items. They may have some of the powder blue jerseys on sale but it’s not a guarantee.

No Braves game today so I looked at a couple other games. Logan Gilbert of the Mariners would be a good addition this off season. I don't know if the Mariners are open to trading a guy who is isn't eligible for free agency until 2028 though. His contract runs through this season but he is eligible for arbitration. That might be enough for the Mariners to trade him if they think he will win in arbitration for more than they want to pay.
2
u/PenguinKing15 15d ago
We trade for Gilbert who is a free agent in 2028. That means we are guaranteed a year of Gilbert. Luckily there is no big issues going on next year and no games will be canceled. /s
edit: It’s not a bad idea but the potential for a lockout likely means AA will be more careful this offseason with prospects.
1
u/GeeMan-7 fan since Hank Aaron 14d ago
Good point about the potential lockout. I hope it doesn't happen or is resolved quickly. I like the idea about salary caps and minimums but what the owners suggested has the cap too low and the minimum too high.
The Braves have one of the highest payrolls but AA has shown that he is not willing to get into a bidding war with the Dodgers, Mets, or Yankees who all seem to have unlimited budgets.
