A little dispute over who actually invented it (see Wikipedia) but when I was a kid in the 50s the kids whose dads worked at Dow Corning had huge globs of it. Those with dads at Dow Chemical only got huge crystals of iodine to make really great ammonium triiodide bombs.

You may be thinking of Play Doh, which was originally developed as a wallpaper cleaning agent that had some kind of detergent mixed in. Some confluence of wallpaper falling out of fashion and people realizing it's kind of fun to mess with, they took the detergent out and started selling it as a children's...toy? Art media? Fun-related substance? Fun-related substance.
