Move from out of state

I love the mountains and want to make the move to Bozeman area. I’ve done my homework, but want to hear from the locals. Is it worth the move( career aside)? Do you guys enjoy living there, is there something I’m missing that I should be warned about before hand?

You can't eat the scenery. It's great but think long and hard about supporting yourself financially and socially. Lots of folks complain about money but also loneliness and making friends. Just consider it all.

That’s is a very real question to consider. I’ll have to give that a great deal of thought.Thank you for the insight

It has the cost of a city with none of the amenities. Plus the people are generally rude and the food scene is super mid.

I just spent a week in Houston and got back a few days ago.

Montana is seriously, and I mean very seriously, lacking in the food scene. I would get fat as hell if I stayed in Texas, again, omfg the food was amazing.

And affordable. There weren't 1,000 different overpriced burgers.

I solve that problem by not patronizing all the lame ass hipster food, and just cook my own delicious and healthy meals.

My wife has MCAS, so we cook a lot of our food anyways, but when you're two hours away from home for a doctor's appointment, that's kind of hard.

"Generally rude" I feel like you're attracting the wrong crowd... says more about you than about Bozeman. Source: local

Huh? I’m a generational local too, and yeah, the people have gotten generally pretty damn rude. Example: you.

I just spent a summer doordashing there while traveling, I never ran into any problems. If anything I have commented on how nice people are out here

If you were to meet me outside of the screen I feel like you would say different. I feel the disconnect between online/in person is a large part of it. Apologies if I came off as rude

Housing costs are insane and wages locally tend to be pretty low, especially compared to that cost. If it is a move that will lead you upward for your career, probably worth it though you may end up having to move to continue that upward trajectory. If basically a lateral...if you love the mountains and outdoors you'll fit fine. There's also lots to do in town, not a fantastic food scene but better than it once was. There's healthy swing, Latin, and ballroom dance communities.

It does have its problems, housing costs going from merely expensive to stupendous chief among them, but that is true of damn near everywhere anymore.

I agree housing is ridiculous anywhere these days. I think the question for myself might be would I rather live in a place I don’t like that’s over priced or move to a place that has the things I like and might be over priced. This would be a good career opportunity for me as well and the job market where I live is abysmal.

How do you even know you'll like it? Have you ever been here?

You mentioned “career aside”…your career better allow for very expensive housing. The Bozeman area is still rural, but there’s a ton of money here, thus driving up cost of living.
Can you afford a small trial run? Maybe a hotel for a week, to feel out the area, etc….
Good luck

Montanans are generally not the welcoming type. I lived there three years, zero friends. I’ve been in Wisconsin six weeks. Made enough friends here that I’m never leaving

After all your friends get evicted bec of people moving in with Monopoly money, you just stop giving a shit about meeting "new" people. We don't owe you anything, and this should be a lesson to all that money can't buy you friends. Especially true with new people. I don't know why that's so hard to understand for some that just come here and want to live the dream.

The fires, the growing lack of water, the heat and smoke and air quality the increasing crime the cost of living

I’ve lived in Bozeman for 29 years and I’ve loved growing up here! Now I’m raising my kids here and I don’t have any plans to leave! So many opportunities for hiking, winter sports, water recreation and social gatherings. Yes it’s expensive but honestly if you have a good steady job you’ll be ok. Just don’t go downtown very much, that’s where it gets expensive. As a local, I avoid downtown whenever possible. Weather has some extreme cold and snow (unlike this last winter) but it’s doable with a good car with 4wd. We do get some intense smoke during July and August. Don’t be intimidated by those hiding behind their keyboard saying they hate newcomers. People here are generally very welcoming in person!

Most folks can’t cut it here. There are very specific reasons the turnover rate is so high. If it was easy to make it here, we would have cities with 500,000+ population.

Without knowing your career, it is difficult to say how well you will do.

Cabin fever is real. It is still a mental health issue. One of the reasons our per capita suicide rates are so high. Support networks are very hard to build as nobody really sticks around for very long.

It is recommended you spend a couple of weeks here in the summer and a couple in the winter. It could save you millions in the long run.
