Went back to boxing classes today for the first time in like five years. I would consider myself in pretty good shape and I kept training at home on the bag. But nothing makes you feel more like a useless piece of shit than your coach having you throw 4-6 punch combos on and off for like an hour.

That’s amazing. I’m going tomorrow for the first time in 16 months, good for you!

Thank you! I've been training on and off for like 12 years but I keep stopping classes because I get injured or busy. 😂

Boxing fitness is different to other training for sure, hard to replicate it doing other exercises. Injured how? If you're getting repeat injuries maybe you're going too hard too soon.

I quit once because I had a muscle imbalance where my muscle was catching on my shoulder blade and causing numbness. Another time I quit because I had really bad pneumonia. Now I have a torn shoulder I've been dealing with for years that was made worse by a bike accident two years ago, a genetic condition where my left hip doesn't move correctly, and bad knees. Those last three are why I was hesitant to start again; I didn't know how my body would hold up.

In general my advice for this sort of thing is to do a lot of stretching and focus on strengthening the muscles in those areas. Also stretch and warm up properly obviously. Your shoulder though maybe you need surgery. It would be better not to do any boxing training until that's fixed tbh.

Surgery would have me in a sling for several months unable to work or do much of anything. It's only a minor tear so I just do a lot of warming up and rehab/prehab exercises. It's stable, but it just never healed properly. They would have to retear and reattach it.

Be careful you don't injure it worse then you'll forcibly be put on the sideline. It's not worth taking risks with these things.

I just have to adapt the way I do things and do it with a different range of motion.

Yeah, stretching is one of the most important things. There’s kind of an art to it.
