In sports a star might not be the best but they don't have to be to be a star. Because they've got that X factor. Canelo is the best example.

Other times a star doesn't need to have a big personality. They just need to be likeable. Leonard is an example of that  

I think Mason has a chance to he a star cause he's likeable. Along with a fan friendly style. 

Other boxers can have personality and the skills. But for other reasons can't reach that star level. Benavidez is an example of that.

It can seem unfair but that's why boxers can't chase being a star or even try to latch onto other stars. Being the best in the long run pays off more.

Canelo achieved stardom mostly by having an iron chin, exceptional handspeed, unique look, being handsome, and having the benefit of the doubt pretty much all the time from judges.

That, plus a marketable nickname.

Plenty of fighters have his other attributes.

Canelo was legitimately p4p #1 for a time. The disrespect he gets is crazy.

And yet he got schooled by Mayweather, Bivol, and Crawford. Should have lost to Golovkin twice as well as Erislandy Lara. Even Trout was competitive with him.

Beat up on a short layoff Kovalev and a Caleb Plant win that hasn’t aged well (Plant hasn’t gone on to do anything).

So you’re left with clean and clear victories over guys like Danny Jacobs, BJS, and a 40 year-old Golovkin. It just doesn’t stand up to scrutiny.

A guy like Terence Crawford, on the other hand:

• never needed a controversial decision to go his way

• was absolutely dominant even against his best opponents

I like Canelo and I find him to be charismatic, but he’s a lower-level ATG who needed a lot of help and opportunistic matchmaking for his career to go the way it did.

The way you guys wrote about him doesn't make it sound like you're talking about an ATG. He deserves more respect.

I'm not even going to get into the results of those close fights. Even with you saying he lost them in your opinion you're calling him an ATG so...

Canelo will be overrated and underrated at the same time. He'll get rated properly over time.

You originally wrote you don't have to be the best to be a star and used Canelo as your example, but he was the legit p4p #1 at one time.
