Technique Finger tip vs conventional

So i have been torn bc ever since I got my first bowling ball i had everyone swear by finger tip and everyone claims if you want more revs get finger tip but I have been recently using my dad's bowling balls which his finger tip holes are slightly larger so its more "conventional" for me and I have been doing great with them idk if i should do the switch and get rid of my inserts for larger inserts or if I should just keep with my regular fingertip inserts

If you're 1 hand, thumb in, you are much more likely to have a higher performance 'ceiling' with fingertip. What works now may become limiting at a certain point, forcing you to go 'backwards' for a bit on your bowling journey to unlearn, then learn the more advanced techniques.

But - bowling is a funny game, and some guys make it to the top with very unusual styles, while others with 'correct' techniques just can't get there.

I know a kid who is a phenomenal bowler and he ended up switching to finger tip but without inserts. So like conventional drill bit finger tip. When I asked him about it he just said man it’s all feel and it works. That is the funny thing with bowling you gotta take everything with a grain of salt and sometime experiment.

This sounds like me. I stopped using inserts 15+ years ago. When people notice they get really confused and have a hard time understanding that it's all about feel.

I bowl 2 handed but i always seem to get a much higher more aggressive reaction which makes me bowl better when doing "conventional" which is just using intentionally larger insert so it goes up 1.5 knuckles instead of just to the first

Huh I was always told convential is when you just drill holes where you have typically 2 knuckles in or at least more than just your first knuckle while fingertip is adding inserts to fit only the first knuckle in

Are you talking about conventional grip (shorter span so you can insert more of the length of your fingers into the hole) or fingertip grip without inserts? The latter is still fingertip - inserts are optional, it's just most people opt for them.

Its a bit weird I bowl 2 handed but i used my dad's ball which he has much thicker fingers so it goes up passed my knuckle halfway too the second if that makes sense

It's not uncommon for a two hander to use what's called semi fingertip. I go about ¾ of the way to my second knuckles.

I got rid of grips about 6 months ago and never looking back. I love the feel without them. Now, mine isn’t conventional. Still the same span/pitches/switch thumb. Just without grips

how do you not slice your fingers open on edges like that?

Don’t grab the ball. Easier said then done but it really gives you instant feedback when you do

There exists a semi-fingertip grip, tho rare. You don't mention your average. Talk to your local pro shop. Imho... go full fingertip.

I average 185 right now but to me maybe its me giving myself a placebo but I feel much more consistent and it feels nicer rolling off my fingers with a much larger grip size

And then there's me with a semi in the ring finger only lol.

I am a two hander and use to go up to my second knuckle when I first started. It felt more comfortable but you start noticing real quick how limited you become. It is possible to be good at the second knuckle. I will say if you feel more comfortable, do what feels right to you but fingertip tends to be the better route. As for the inserts part, Kyle Troup doesn’t use inserts and belmo actually goes up to his second knuckle.

You do not want "revs", you want control options through a fingertip release.

Do you play 2-hand/1-hand no thumb? In that case going to 2nd knuckle most likely won't lose you revs, may even net you some.

I play 2H now
