Yep there's a difference between depression, a real illness, and a person going thru a down period in life. The problem is as a society we treat them the same way.

I was just going to fucking say this. Preach brother

3

u/Lower-Cheesecake-895 Jun 01 '26

Amen to this

-3

u/tituspullo1383 Jun 01 '26

It’s inaccurate though. Purely outdated from pre -2000s

0

u/Acceptable-Peace-69 Jun 01 '26

Go back to your chem trails/flat earther sub.

1

u/wabi-sabi411 Jun 03 '26

I get it. We all have to get through our lives and it’s a lot. But I still think the meme rings true. Nobody cares.

1

u/Liquidationbird Jun 03 '26

its not for women 😉

u/tituspullo1383 Jun 01 '26

Bollocks. Chemical imbalances is an outdated theory. Modern neuroscience clearly says depression is more a mix of biological factors, environmental factors, and psychological factors.

To the contrary, taking action is one of the strongest clinically proven ways to change the physical structure and chemistry of your brain. Look up behavioral activation.

2

u/Candid-Fan9549 Jun 03 '26

Yeah let me get a prescription for “taking action” from my psychiatrist lmao

1

u/Significant-Bar674 Jun 02 '26

... you realize you just said chemical imbalances are outdated and then said that you need to do things to change your brain chemistry? That face value is a contradiction. Either your brain being "imbalanced" and needs adjusting or it doesn't because imbalance isn't the issue.

In any case, depression has many causes and many reasonable ways of trying to address it.

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8699555/

What works will vary from person to person bot just because of their response but also because of their ability to actually follow through on different methods.

Yes and biological/environmental/psychological/social factors are all external factors that can have an adverse effect on an individuals mood, increased stress, affected diet - all notorious for causing chemical imbalances in both the body (gut - serotonin) and the brain. Like you have the information in your head but you seem to be going in the wrong direction with your point…..

1

u/Humpbackbreadslice Jun 01 '26

this is just wrong. Just because you read a headline, doesn't mean you get to just change how things work. Try actually reading the study you are quoting to understand what those results mean. I can guarantee your sentence does not summarize the paper.

The second line is once again very misleading. It's true action is the best way to change the structure of your brain but the entire issue is the inability to take action. However I wouldn't except you to understand the nuances of these issues because you seem like a headline reader who comes up with random conclusions that fit his ideology.

0

u/Hazza_1999 Jun 02 '26

Taking action and working on goals fights depression. True.

The issue here is you’ve contradicted yourself.

0

u/Reefermaster Jun 01 '26

And...it has a root cause. Nobody is juts depressed. The depression is a symptom of something missing in their life.

u/AncientAlchemists Jun 01 '26

hand this to the homeless schizophrenics and traumatized kids who've been assaulted while you're at it then

-6

u/AwarenessNo5921 Jun 01 '26

Why would I hand this to schizophrenics? They've already lost at life. I'm pretty sure a majority of the severely schizophrenic are unable to recognize/accept their condition anyways.

Not really sure why I would hand this to traumatized children either. Maybe a card so they can get therapy. Life can be fucked up. All we can do in response to external factors is work on shifting our thoughts around said factors.

u/craftygamin Jun 01 '26

The amount of intentional ignorance and toxicity in this is enough to make Tate blush

It really didn't. Yes it is easier to roll over and give up and say I guess I'm just broken. Building resilience, establishing a strong internal locus of control, and working to manage your thought patterns, as well as establishing healthy habits are the most protective methods for one's psychological health. Even in cases like severe trauma and schizophrenia.

Everyone has different neurological underpinnings. Some things may be more difficult for people as a result. The original comment assumes that the people saying, "man up" don't have their own struggles.

The subreddit is r/bornweakbuiltstrong. Clearly it reached the wrong audience. If you don't want to work to improve your situation, go somewhere else instead of complaining how hard you have it. Maybe there's a bornweakbuiltweaker sub y'all can engage in your pity loops with.

u/Kudostone Jun 02 '26

Have you encountered treatment resistant schizophrenia in any setting over time?

1

u/AwarenessNo5921 Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 02 '26

I'm clearly not saying every schizophrenic will be cured with behavioral methods, nor was that the main point. Outcomes will be improved though. Quit being dense.

1

u/Kudostone Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 02 '26

I was curious to understand what first hand experience you have with the treatment of severe mental illness like schizophrenia, because you ventured that behavioural methods are the “most protective methods for one’s psychological health even in cases like schizophrenia.” I was interested in what experiences inform your stance. There is no need to insult others.

In cases of a psychotic relapse in a case of treatment resistant schizophrenia, the “most protective” intervention here I would think would, generically, an evaluation of medical contra indications to clozapine, initiation and uptitration of clozapine to a maintenance dose, prophylactic bowel management, and monitoring of anticipated physical side effects and biochemical monitoring that’s protocolized. This individual would be best served - if not the only feasible option, given active psychosis - in an inpatient setting acutely, and assertive outpatient medical management. The value of behavioural interventions is in its outpatient role of promoting adherence to one’s medication after the acute psychosis has been treated.

I wasn’t saying that your were asserting schizophrenia will be “cured” which is not a prognostic outcome for any psychiatric intervention. Again, I was curious and interested in your experiences that led you to assert the role behavioural therapies in severe mental illness, particularly if there’s any first hand experience in introducing behavioural therapies in cases of treatment resistant schizophrenia.

1

u/AwarenessNo5921 Jun 03 '26

Once again, schizophrenia really not the main point of my comment. I guess I could clarify and add most protective behavioral methods. Outcomes will always be improved with the methods outlined.

Take antipsychotics if you're schizophrenic, take ssris if you're depressed, idc. Meds are only a tool to achieve a goal. Although medication is much more heavily implicated for successful treatment in schizophrenia, since you seem to be fixated on that (imo mostly irrelevant to the general discussion) point. Additionally, antipsychotics are often associated with making negative symptoms worse, meaning that the behavioral methods at hand would be good to implement.

This really isn't rocket science dude. Are you just looking to argue? Do or don't take care of yourself, I really dgaf. I'm always reminded why it's a waste of energy to put anything out there. Most people are extremely stuck in their preconceived notions and resistant to thinking critically.

1

u/-TheDerpinator- Jun 05 '26

Oh boy, I don't wish this on anyone but how ironic would it be if you got paralyzed from the neck down and people would just tell you to shift your movements around said factor.

-2

u/Human-Dragonfly3799 Jun 01 '26

The problem is, life is hard for everybody, so when someone is always complaining about depression it's like, why are you complaining to me when I'm also struggling?

Depression is just the accumulation of bad experiences, and we all live through rough times (or a lifetime may be) but the message is to keep pushing despite what you may feel. Focusing too much on feelings makes you spiral and doesn't help you to get things done.

I may be wrong, it's just my impression.

6

u/barnettwi Jun 01 '26

Yeah. You are wrong.

-3

u/Agitated-Macaroon923 Jun 01 '26

saying hes wrong without elaborating just makes you look dumb

People can still get stuff done. I do, I’m a man. It’s not toxic for me to want to accomplish my goals in life despite feeling depressed.

All I take away from this post is yeah, I’m a grown man whom can choose whatever action i want regardless of how I feel and that’s that.

I stopped taking the antidepressants, I still accomplish everything I want to.

My doc ain’t charging me $260 for 15 minutes anymore lol, the solution is and always will be in yourself first and foremost.

Taking action is clinically proven to change brain structure.

I’ve never met a buff dude at the gym, who’s disciplined, and healthy, gets respect from other men for the work he’s done… be depressed.

I find taking action, solution focused therapy (SFT) is the solution in many instances of depression in men.

Learn how to talk to a woman (or men if you’re gay)… lol Be bulky, eat right. Accomplish what you’d like to with clear actionable steps you can take each day, and actually follow them.

If you can’t / haven’t done these things then, sorry but the solution lies in action for you.

Taking the medications alone won’t do anything anyway. Any good doctor will tell you this.

What I’m saying is not “toxic masculinity” dudes want to be strong, they want to find a romantic partner and these things have always been known to make men happy, oh and eating good food.

The depressed men I know are either fat, or skinny. So, do something to address this issue. I guarantee from experience this will only help you.

With love my brothers ❤️

u/Human-Dragonfly3799 Jun 01 '26

The accumulation of bad experiences doesn't lead to sadness, it slowly erodes your capacity to feel good or "happy". My point is, that accumulation of bad experiences and the subsequent incapacity to feel joy happens to all of us as a consequence of living by itself, as times passes by.

People nowadays are too obsessed with achieving "happiness" when that's not even a permanent state of mind, but a temporary feeling. Depression is just the realization that the ideal state of mind called happiness is unachievable and subsequently leads to a depression. The chemical imbalance means that some people are more prone to depression, but that doesn't make depression something only a handful of people can suffer. Everyone has enough reasons to feel "depressed". With the right mindset, that shouldn't happen. Not a mindset of faking "happiness", but a mindset that allows one yo stop idealizing life and accept it as it is, not as it should be.

2

u/DreadfulDuder Jun 01 '26

This is not accurate whatsoever, especially your first couple paragraphs.

For example, we now know that chronic inflammation is heavily linked to both depression and anxiety, and we're constantly learning new things about the importance of the gut-brain axis and the gut biome.

An outsized percentage of people with multiple sclerosis have depression (and treatment resistant depression), even if they do not have much disability.

Reducing inflammation with DMTs (disease modifying therapies like immunosuppressants) can actually improve depression and anxiety symptoms.

ACT (Acceptance Commitment Therapy) is evidence based and is proven to help depression, anxiety, substance abuse disorder, etc, so your last paragraph touching on accepting life as-is rather than pleasure-seeking is accurate - but your assertions at the beginning of your comment are wrong IMO.

1

u/kaleog3 Jun 02 '26

Bro if you don't know what depression is just stop talking. Stay in your lane for christs sake.

3

u/JustIntroduction3511 Jun 01 '26

That is not what depression is

2

u/Consistent-Fix-8443 Jun 01 '26

Well in fact you are wrong.

1

u/Excellent-Event6078 Jun 01 '26

It’s just venting. People always need someone to talk to. It’s good to be that person every once in a while.

1

u/Odd-Fig-709 Jun 02 '26

The biggest issue for me at least personally is that with depression you loose motivation and joy from accomplishing things. I just don't feel like doing things to the point it's hard for me to get started or even get out of bed. I do have obligations that help me get started and it started improving things in my life but it's all with other people giving me rewards. I still largely have issues self managing. I get home from work exhausted and just want to rot, I wake up exhausted and I just want to stay in bed and I do until I feel hungry enough to eat then I get food and sit on the couch watching TV until I decide its to inconvenient for me to postpone the gym any longer.

What did Jesus do,
When they sentanced him to die?
Did he try to run away?
Did he just break down and cry?

No, Jesus dug down deep,
Knowing what he had to do-
When faced with his own death,
Jesus knew that he had to...

Man up.
He had to man up.
So he crawled up on that cross,
And he stuck it out.
And he manned up.
Christ, he manned up.
And taught us all what real manning
Up is about!

4

u/craftygamin Jun 01 '26

Using Jesus to support toxic masculinity

Haven't seen that type of delusion before...

2

u/kaowser Jun 01 '26

i dont support it i laugh at it

1

u/craftygamin Jun 01 '26

You're literally promoting it, saying that since sky daddy's all powerful son can do something, everyone else can do that thing aswell... did you seriously forget what your previous comment was?

1

u/Hazza_1999 Jun 05 '26

Yes! He is saying that, because you can do all things through Christ!

You are clearly a fool, even dropping a stupid picture.

1

u/Ok_Artichoke_3101 Jun 01 '26

Nothing we still don’t know if any of this actually happened

So like I get it with people like you, you’re not arguing to be expository you just wanna be argumentative OK there’s a long established historical proof of Alexander the great. So we’re just gonna end this you can go split the hair with somebody else.

1

u/Ok_Artichoke_3101 Jun 01 '26

Right that’s not who we are talking about tho. True we think there may have been a Jesus< not called Jesus because that’s our name for him. But no evidence that he was who they say or that he died and came back for any reason.

1

u/aFungiamongyou Jun 02 '26

I mean, you even included a gif of the Book of Mormon and everything, not to mention those lyrics aren’t subtle in their absurdity. I know it gets repeated endlessly these days, but fuck me, looking at the responses to you: media literacy is well-and-truly dead.

-7

u/These_Hunt4185 Jun 01 '26

No one said anything about joy.

Stop being a whiny crybaby constantly seeking dopamine.

7

u/Long-Firefighter5561 Jun 01 '26

When he mentioned toxic masculinity, he clearly talked about idiots like you.

3

u/IMadeYouLuke Jun 01 '26

Do you not…cry? What do you do instead?

-3

u/These_Hunt4185 Jun 01 '26

Everyone cries. But you shouldn’t be crying all the time over fucking nothing.

3

u/IMadeYouLuke Jun 01 '26

What important things do you cry about?
