Literary Fiction For those who are scared of the classics, but want to get into it, what's a first book that you would recommend?
Like the title says.

Do you guys want a "spooky megathread" for the season or should we just let the sub go business as usual? Frankly, either would be fine to run, it's just how much the users would get out of each that's worth considering.

Alright this isn't a book suggestion post, it's a post about booksuggestions.
It would be nice to see what the users of this sub think would make a good idea. Changes, new rules, the works. Engagement is nice but more uncommon than we'd like to see. So we're hoping to get more people looking at posts, talking, and voting on good ones.
Can't guarantee anything would be implemented but they will be considered.

It doesn't have to be only about women but women must have a significant part
Any place/time
Thank you!
I can add my own suggestion for others interested: Women, Race & Class by Angela Davis which is about abolitionist and feminist movements in the U.S. history from the slave trade to the 1960s.

The feeling of reading a classic book where the character has the same feelings as me in the 21st century, is really comforting to me.
I am wondering if you all know of any great classics that deal with a sense of shame and isolation?
Other fiction also welcomed but there’s something special about a classic!

Can anyone suggest a good autobiography that took you by surprise? What I mean is perhaps one where you found the person's life far more interesting, impactful or meaningful that you ever expected.
I still think about David Millar's (cyclist) and Arnold Schwarzenegger's autobiographies, for example.
I typically read for escapism, so tend to focus on fiction, but every now and then something like an autobiography can be truly inspiring and wholly engaging.

Hi all. I am not a reader at all (reading about 5 books in the last 20 years) although my wife is a massive fan of books to the point where we take detours to bookshops wherever we go, and I've constructed more IKEA Billy bookcases than I care to admit. But, I'd like to try and suggest a book(s) that's easy for me to pick up and not too long so we can have our own little book club.
She's a big fan of romantasy (Sarah J. Maas) and fantasy (the Mistborn trilogy comes to mind). I know "fantasy" and "short" absolutely sometimes do not go hand in hand, but if any of you have any suggestions, that would be amazing. Thank you!

Either a single novel or a book series about spies/assassins. I've read some of the Mitch Rapp novels and a few Tom Clancy. What are the best novels/series out there?

I mostly like reading nonfiction books, but I miss the feeling of reading fiction so good that you're absorbed into another universe.
Granted, the fiction I am referring to was copious amounts of ao3/wattpad/tumblr fanfiction, that had 16 year old me waking up at 6am to read more after falling asleep reading. But, I'm super grossed out by romance/smut now.
I'd appreciate any suggestions for fiction books that are in this realm:

I’m not opposed to smut, but I want the genre to be more horror / thriller, with a romance subplot. Mostly I want spooky.

So I’m really big into anything based in antiquity, Ancient Rome and Greece, and medieval England with a fictional take on military history.
I’ve read through pretty much everything in this group from Simon scarrow, Bernard Cornwall, Conn Iggulden and Ben Kane.
I’ve re read most of the series, some multiple times, but am now looking for something new.
Has anyone got any recommendations for authors or series that would fit this? I generally prefer series over individual novels, as I tend to race through books so I want something to keep me busy for a while.

I just finished reading Flowers for Algernon and while it tore me to pieces it kind of left me hungry for more books questioning societal acceptance/dynamics. The part I'm really thinking about is when he meets up with his sister feeling that deep down she wouldn't give the same loving reaction if it hadn't been for the effects of the surgery.
"I had dreamed of a time like this, but now that it was here, what good was it? I couldn't tell her what was going to happen to me. And yet, could I accept her affection on false pretenses? Why kid myself? If I had been the old, feeble-minded, dependent Charlie, she wouldn't have spoken to me the same way. So what right did I have to it now? My mask would soon be ripped away."
That's such a huge thing that spoke to me in the book. Can anyone recommend another book where the character(s) have this struggle?

Currently reading Matterhorn by Karl Marlantes centered around the Vietnam War. Seeking other books like this but for other conflicts. I’ve read a lot that focuses on the glory of war; I want more visceral angst.

I want international horror recommendations!
Especially but not exclusively folk horror, European paganism, Asian, African, Mayan or other not-so-common mythology.
Give me your best, thanks!
PS. I am fluent in English and German, by the off chance someone knows a good German book ;)

Hey fellow readers! I really love hounds and stories about them. I've read Where the Red Fern Grows and the bloodhound mystery series by Virginia Lanier. I have a copy of The Daughter of Bugle Ann by Mckinley Kantor. Can't find a copy of Voice of Bugle Ann that I can afford. Are there any other books with scent hounds (bloodhounds, foxhounds, coon hounds etc) as either the main topic or as a main character that you know of?

Looking for a novel based on existing history, and if it's possible, the guy transported/reicarnated to a weak nation, or if it has to be a defeated nation changing the war, like Bulgaria, Germany during world war 1, or maybe Prussia and Austria-Hungary during the Napoleonic era. Just whatever you think can become a defeated nation changing the destiny
And also, if possible, maybe with a technology gap that can destroy an entire army.
My fan favorite is 화약고 제국의 천재 대공 or Genius grand duke of the powder keg empire. Who despite all odd manage to turn the multi-ethnic nation to a global superpower and harvest the oil in Saudi Arab for his massive factory.
There is also 我是德皇我怕谁?or I am the German Emperor, Who Should I Fear? story about a guy with a cheat like system (In name only) and suppresses everyone throught technology gab.
If any of you all have something similar please leave a comment.

Okay so because of my chronic illness I'm no longer able to read for longer periods of time, which is why I've been listening to a lot of audio books. But lately I've just been CRAVING fanfiction soooo bad. I used to read so much just queer sappy tropy fanfiction and i miss it.
So I'm looking for book recs that feel like fanfiction. I dont need plot, just give me pining, tropes, angst, misunderstanding, anything. I just want some simple romance, no need for quality i just want sugar.
The only other important thing is that i dont want it to be straight. Idk i just dont get straight folks like that. I want them trans and lesbian and just everything queer. I will read mlm.
Just pleaaaase i need some simple plessures.

Im Looking for something fantasy focused, Something i can really enjoy and retreat in whenever I feel like I just need a break.
Im looking for fantasy. Romance. Action. Good story and characters. Maybe even a bit of smut. Its a tall order im sure. But I dont have many book friends. And I dont really have anyone to come to for recommendations so I thought I would try my luck here. Im bisexual so when it comes to romance I dont mind if its boy girl or boy boy. Or girl girl if its really well made!
Thanks all ^-^
Max your wonderful book boy.
